Taxonomy & naming
Physoschistura elongata was described by Sen and Nalbant in 1982 and placed in the genus Physoschistura within the family Nemacheilidae. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, confirms Physoschistura elongata as the currently accepted combination.
The genus Physoschistura sits within a part of the loach family tree that has been repeatedly reshuffled — the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been split many times over the past few decades into narrower genera including Schistura, Physoschistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula. FishBase notes that an examination of the holotype of this species found lip morphology differing from typical Physoschistura, and some authors have tentatively referred it to Schistura instead; the point is unsettled, and this article keeps the currently catalogued name, Physoschistura elongata.
Morphology
Physoschistura elongata is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of only about 2 in total length. Like other members of this family it has an elongate, subcylindrical body, a flattened head and belly suited to life on the streambed, and paired fins used to brace against current rather than for open-water swimming.
As in other true loaches, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove beneath the eye and the skin is effectively naked, covered only in small, deeply embedded scales — a combination that matters for handling and for medication sensitivity. Detailed published description of this species' colour pattern and fin-ray counts is limited, and beyond the type material and a handful of regional records it is a genuinely data-sparse fish; specifics on markings and sexual differences have not been established in the sources available here.
Habitat
The species is known from the Barapani area near Shillong, Meghalaya, in the Brahmaputra river basin of northeastern India, and appears to be endemic to India. FishBase describes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish living in a large lake with a gravelly bottom, consistent with the gravel- and stone-associated habits typical of stone loaches, which otherwise favour cool, clear, well-oxygenated streams and their margins.
Meghalaya sits in the wet, hilly Khasi–Jaintia uplands that feed the Brahmaputra system, an area of fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams draining into larger waterbodies. As with most Nemacheilidae, this is not a warm, still-water fish; it belongs to cool-to-mild, well-aerated, gravel-bottomed fresh water rather than a heated, sluggish aquarium-style tropical stream.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study is available in the sources consulted, but Physoschistura elongata's biology fits the general pattern for small stone and brook loaches: FishBase records a trophic level of about 2.9, consistent with an omnivore-leaning-detritivore that forages over gravel and sediment for small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic material rather than hunting in open water.
Stone loaches in this family are typically bold benthic micro-predators, working the bottom for insect larvae and small crustaceans and picking up detritus and algae along the way. In the absence of aquarium-trade experience with this particular species, a keeper would follow that general nemacheilid pattern — small live and frozen invertebrate foods plus sinking preparations — rather than relying on flake.
Mating
No published account of courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism in Physoschistura elongata was found in the sources consulted. This is unsurprising for a narrow-range stream endemic that has never entered the aquarium trade and has attracted little targeted study beyond its original description and conservation assessment.

Given its restricted range, small size and complete absence from the trade, this is a fish known essentially only from field collections and museum material rather than from captive husbandry. Anyone encountering it would be working from first principles drawn from better-studied nemacheilid relatives, not from any established captive-breeding record.
In the aquarium
Physoschistura elongata is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it does not appear to be traded, and no husbandry accounts were found. Any discussion of its care must therefore be inferred from its family rather than from direct experience with the species.
General stone-loach husbandry principles would apply if it were ever kept: cool-to-mild, clear, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or stone substrate, since this is a benthic fish adapted to flowing streams rather than still, warm tanks. As with other nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin implies sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, so any such fish should be dosed cautiously. Given the total absence of trade or care data, the honest position is that this species should be left to field researchers and its native habitat rather than treated as a keepable aquarium subject.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Physoschistura elongata as Vulnerable under criterion B1ab(iii), an assessment dated 23 January 2010. The listing reflects the species' extremely restricted known range — apparently confined to the Barapani area near Shillong in Meghalaya, India — and ongoing threats from mining and other anthropogenic habitat destruction in the Brahmaputra basin.
As a narrow-range endemic with no recorded role in the aquarium trade, its conservation outlook depends entirely on the condition of its home streams in Meghalaya rather than on any collecting pressure. Continued mining activity and associated habitat degradation in the region are the documented drivers of concern for this species.
