Taxonomy & naming
Leptobotia pellegrini was described by P'eng-fei Fang in 1936, one of several Chinese loach species he characterised during a productive decade of ichthyological work on the rivers of southern and southwestern China. It belongs to the family Botiidae — the botiid loaches — a family now well-separated from the true spined loaches of Cobitidae, though older literature sometimes placed botiids within Cobitidae as a subfamily. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Leptobotia pellegrini Fang, 1936.
The genus Leptobotia is a Chinese genus of robust-bodied, comparatively large loaches with a leaning toward subtropical and temperate river systems. Several Leptobotia species are encountered in the aquarium trade under informal names such as "royal loach" or "Chinese loach"; L. pellegrini is one of the more frequently traded representatives. It is a comparatively slender Leptobotia with a darker head than several of its congeners, a point of distinction noted in aquarium literature.
Morphology
Leptobotia pellegrini is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed botiid loach with a blunt, downward-angled mouth well adapted for bottom foraging. Published maximum sizes are around 8–8.5 in standard length, making it one of the larger loaches available to the hobby. The patterning typically involves a pale to creamy-buff ground colour overlaid with darker banding or mottling; the head is notably darker than in some related species, a useful field mark. The large mouth, combined with the fish's eventual size, means it can prey on small tankmates.
As a true botiid, L. pellegrini carries a sharp, erectile suborbital spine in a groove beneath each eye — a defence mechanism that can snag nets and draw blood from a careless hand. The body is near-scaleless: the tiny, deeply embedded scales leave the skin feeling smooth to the touch. This near-scaleless integument makes the fish highly permeable to dissolved chemicals, with direct consequences for medication sensitivity and disease management.
Habitat
Leptobotia pellegrini is native to Sichuan province in southwestern China and the Pearl River basin of Guangxi Autonomous Region, with records suggesting possible occurrence in the Lo River drainage of northern Vietnam. These are fast-to-medium-flow river and stream habitats at subtropical latitudes — cooler, better-oxygenated systems than the warm lowland rivers of Southeast Asia favoured by tropical botiids such as the clown loach.
The water chemistry across these drainages tends toward neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately hard, consistent with the limestone geology of much of southern China. Temperature in these upland and foothill rivers runs cooler than true tropical systems, and the fish is not tolerant of the warm, still, oxygen-poor water that would suit a tropical community tank. Clean, fast-flowing, high-oxygen conditions are the baseline requirement.
Feeding
In the wild, Leptobotia pellegrini is a benthic predator and opportunistic omnivore, foraging over the riverbed for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, with some plant matter and detritus taken incidentally. Its large mouth and robust body suggest it is an effective predator on small prey.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of foods readily. Seriously Fish and Loaches Online both describe it as taking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Tubifex, earthworms and chopped shellfish — as well as quality sinking pellets and other dried foods. As the fish matures it can handle larger food items. Feed at or after lights-out to suit its partly nocturnal bottom-foraging habit, and offer enough food that lower-ranked individuals in a group compete successfully for their share.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Leptobotia pellegrini is not well documented in aquarium literature. As is typical of botiid loaches, reliable external sexing is difficult outside of spawning condition; ripe females may appear fuller-bodied, but no readily visible secondary sexual characters are recorded for this species.
In the wild, spawning in Chinese botiids is likely seasonal and tied to flow and temperature cycles — the spring and early summer rise in water temperature and flow volume that signals breeding readiness in many river fishes of temperate and subtropical China. Recreating the environmental cues that trigger breeding condition is not straightforward in a domestic aquarium, and no captive spawning of L. pellegrini is documented in accessible aquarium literature.
Breeding
Leptobotia pellegrini has not been successfully reproduced in home aquaria — no reliable account of captive spawning appears in the aquarium literature consulted (Seriously Fish, Loaches Online). Like other botiid loaches it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, and breeding is tied in the wild to seasonal environmental triggers — changes in water temperature, flow and volume — that are difficult or impossible to replicate in a domestic setting.
This is the honest picture for virtually all botiid loaches outside of commercial aquaculture: they are not tank-spawned by hobbyists. Keepers should acquire L. pellegrini for its qualities as a long-lived, sociable, interesting bottom fish, with no expectation of breeding success in a home aquarium.
In the aquarium
Leptobotia pellegrini is a sociable loach that does better in a group than alone or in pairs. Seriously Fish recommends a minimum of three to four individuals to prevent stress, withdrawal or aggression toward tankmates; a group of five or more is preferable, allowing the fish to establish a hierarchy and engage in the interactive shoaling behaviour typical of botiids. Kept singly, the species can become skittish or antagonistic. Like other botiids, it may produce audible clicking sounds when content.
This is a subtropical fish and that distinction matters: it should not be kept at the warm temperatures (79–86 °F) typical of a tropical community tank. Its preferred range of 68–75 °F (Seriously Fish) or 68–75 °F (Loaches Online: 68–75°F) suits a cooler system shared with other temperate or subtropical species — robust Chinese cyprinids and other cool-water loaches — rather than typical warm-water community fish. pH should be neutral to slightly alkaline (6.5–8.0); hardness up to about 12 dGH is tolerated.
The near-scaleless skin makes L. pellegrini sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many proprietary treatments. Yet botiid loaches are often among the first fish in a tank to develop ich (white spot disease), so the keeper must be alert to early signs and treat carefully — typically at half dose, with a gentle, copper-free product, and with good water quality maintained throughout. The fish also benefits from physical structure in the tank: rocks, slate pieces and pebbles under which it can hide reflect its natural habitat and reduce stress. Its eventual adult size (around 8 in) and its large mouth mean it will prey on very small tankmates; pair it with fish of comparable size and robustness.
Conservation
Leptobotia pellegrini is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2011), reflecting a distribution across the Pearl River basin and Sichuan drainages that is wide enough to preclude immediate conservation concern under current criteria. No severe population declines are documented.
However, China's river systems — particularly the Yangtze and Pearl River basins — face substantial pressure from dam construction, water extraction, agricultural runoff and urbanisation. Several Chinese botiid loaches with more restricted distributions than L. pellegrini are under greater threat, and the broader health of these river systems is a legitimate long-term concern even for currently widespread species. Specimens in the trade are sourced from wild populations; there is no record of commercial aquaculture production for this species, so the trade draws on wild-caught fish.
