Taxonomy & naming
Leptobotia rubrilabris was first described by the French diplomat and naturalist Dabry de Thiersant in 1872, hence the parenthetical authority. The original combination has been shuffled several times: the species appears in older literature as Parabotia rubrilabris and was listed under the misspelled epithets Leptobotia rubrilaris and Botia pratti (a junior synonym) and Botia fangi. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current combination as Leptobotia rubrilabris — the name used here.
The genus Leptobotia (tribe Leptobotiini, family Botiidae) holds around 16 species, distributed predominantly across southern China's major river basins — the Yangtze, Pearl and coastal rivers of Zhejiang. It is distinguished from related botiid genera by a simple, un-bifurcated suborbital spine. Length–weight data from the Niulan River, a Yangtze tributary, were published by Zhang (2017), confirming the species' range in the type-locality region.
Morphology
L. rubrilabris is among the largest Leptobotia species, recorded to around 8.5 in standard length and weighing up to roughly 105 g. The body is elongated and moderately compressed, typical of the genus, with a slightly arched back and a pointed snout housing a noticeably large mouth — a feature that rules it out as a tankmate for small fish. The common name "red-lipped loach" refers to the reddish or orange-tinged lips, which are distinctive among the genus.
Like all botiids, it carries an erectile suborbital spine — a sharp, jointed spine set in a groove beneath each eye that can be flicked outward as a defence. These spines snag nets easily and can draw blood from an unwary hand; the fish is best moved in a container rather than a mesh net. The skin is near-scaleless (scales tiny and deeply embedded), giving the body a smooth feel and making the fish notably sensitive to medications that are absorbed through the skin.
Habitat
This species is a native of the middle and upper Yangtze River system in China, with documented records from Sichuan and Hunan provinces; there are possible records from northern Vietnam's Lo River, though the main population is centred on the Chinese Yangtze basin. It is a demersal, riverine fish of fast-flowing, well-oxygenated mountain streams and foothill rivers, living over gravel and rock substrates — the kind of clean, cool, high-gradient water that the Yangtze's tributaries once offered in abundance.
The water parameters documented by Seriously Fish reflect this origin: temperatures of roughly 59–70 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and moderate to high hardness (90–357 ppm). This is distinctly cooler than the range of most tropical loaches in the hobby, placing L. rubrilabris firmly in the subtropical or temperate category. It is a strictly freshwater species and has no tolerance for brackish conditions.
Feeding
In the wild, L. rubrilabris feeds as a benthic omnivore with a strong carnivorous lean, taking insects, crustaceans and small fishes — a trophic level of 3.3 from FishBase confirms the animal-protein bias. Its large mouth relative to most Leptobotia is consistent with a diet that includes larger prey items. It also takes invertebrates including worms and small molluscs.
In the aquarium, Loaches Online notes it is straightforward to feed and accepts standard aquarium foods readily. Seriously Fish recommends a diet based on bloodworms, Tubifex, chopped shellfish, earthworms and sinking pellets. Because it is a large, active fish kept in a group, portions should be sized so that lower-ranking individuals get their share; an evening or after-lights-out feed suits its partly nocturnal foraging habit.
Mating
Reliable data on the reproductive behaviour of L. rubrilabris in either the wild or captivity are sparse. As a botiid loach the broad expectation is that spawning is tied to seasonal flood or monsoon cues — rising water levels, temperature changes and increased flow that trigger migration into shallower, faster tributary waters where eggs are released. No confirmed captive spawning is documented, and the sexing criteria applicable to many larger botiids (riper females being noticeably fuller-bodied in breeding condition) can tentatively be applied here, but in the absence of specific data this remains speculative.
The fundamental obstacles to captive mating mirror those of other large Leptobotia: large adult size, long road to sexual maturity, and the need for seasonal environmental cues — a drop and subsequent rise in temperature, a change in flow and photoperiod — that a static aquarium cannot replicate.
Breeding
Leptobotia rubrilabris has not been bred in the home aquarium. As a botiid it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: in nature, ripe adults release adhesive eggs into fast-flowing water, where they hatch in roughly 18–24 hours at appropriate temperatures. The adults take no further role. This reproductive strategy, linked to seasonal migration and flood-pulse hydrology, is not replicable in a standard aquarium setup.
No commercial hormone-induced captive production exists for this species as it does for the clown loach — L. rubrilabris is an uncommon species in the trade, and any individuals encountered will almost certainly be wild-caught. Keepers should approach this fish as a long-term display animal, not a breeding project.
In the aquarium
L. rubrilabris is a genuinely uncommon aquarium fish, and the conditions it requires set it apart from most botiids available to hobbyists. Its cool-water preference (59–70 °F) means it cannot be kept in a standard tropical community tank; it needs a dedicated cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flow setup more akin to a hillstream biotope than a Botia tank. Seriously Fish recommends at least a 120 × 17.5 in footprint with turnover of four to five times the tank volume per hour, spotless water quality and a stream-inspired layout of smooth river pebbles, boulders, driftwood and PVC structures for shelter. It should never be added to a tank that has not fully cycled.
Despite not being as overtly social as the clown loach, it is still a group-living species: Seriously Fish recommends a minimum of three to four individuals, as singly kept fish become withdrawn or show aggression. Its large mouth and competitive feeding behaviour make it unsuitable for tanks containing small or slow-moving fish, or long-finned species. Like all near-scaleless botiids, it is sensitive to copper and full-strength medications — use half-dose treatments and avoid copper-based products entirely. The suborbital spines snag nets, so always move the fish in a container.
Conservation
Leptobotia rubrilabris was assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) by the IUCN in 2017 — the highest non-extinct category, indicating an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The Yangtze River basin, its home, is one of the most heavily altered river systems on earth: the Three Gorges Dam and dozens of smaller dams have fragmented habitat, altered hydrology, and blocked the seasonal migrations on which Yangtze fishes depend for reproduction. Overfishing, water pollution and sand mining compound these pressures across the river's middle and upper reaches.
The species' restricted range within the Yangtze basin, combined with these pervasive threats, makes its survival trajectory genuinely precarious. It appears rarely in the aquarium trade, and wild capture for the hobby — while representing small absolute numbers — is an added concern for a population under severe pressure. There is no known captive-bred supply. Keepers who acquire this fish should treat it as a conservation asset and document care conditions and any reproductive behaviour carefully.
