Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis sinensis was described by Henri Émile Sauvage and Pierre-Marie Dabry de Thiersant in 1874, placing it from the outset in Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches. The genus is large and taxonomically active, with numerous similar-looking Eurasian species distinguished mainly by fine details of colour pattern and lamina circularis (a scale structure used in ageing and identification), so some regional populations attributed to C. sinensis have been reassessed over the years as material and molecular data have accumulated.
The species epithet sinensis is simply Latin for "of China," reflecting the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, retains the combination Cobitis sinensis, and it should not be confused with the many other spiny loaches — Cobitis taenia, C. melanoleuca and their relatives — that share the genus across the wider Palearctic.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach with a pointed snout and the family's signature feature: an erectile, forked spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out when handled or threatened. FishBase records it reaching about 3 in standard length typically, with a recorded maximum of around 6 in total length, making it one of the larger members of its genus but still a modestly sized fish overall.
Like other Cobitidae, its scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked — a trait that matters for husbandry and disease treatment far more than for appearance. Colouration is typically a pale sandy-brown to olive ground shade broken by a row of dark blotches or a mottled pattern along the flanks, camouflage suited to a life spent lying against sand and gravel.
Habitat
Cobitis sinensis is native to East Asia, recorded from China — including the Yangtze River basin — and Korea. It inhabits shallow, clear-water streams, a benthopelagic freshwater species that lives close to the bottom rather than in open water. This is a temperate, coldwater environment, not a tropical one: the streams it comes from experience real seasonal cold, and the species is built to handle it.
In the aquarium this translates to a fish that is comfortable well outside typical tropical temperatures, tolerating brief spells near freezing in the wild and settling happily into an unheated tank or outdoor pond through much of the year. A soft, sandy substrate is essential, both because the species burrows into it and because coarse or sharp gravel can injure its scaleless skin.
Feeding
Cobitis sinensis is a benthic omnivore that forages by sifting through soft substrate for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and detritus, taking whatever edible matter turns up as it works through sand and fine gravel. This sand-sifting habit is central to how the species feeds and cannot really be replaced by feeding from the water column alone.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking foods readily — small pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and similar fare — but does best when kept over a soft sand bed it can actually work through, rather than bare glass or coarse gravel. A varied diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods alongside prepared sinking foods keeps it in good condition.
Mating
FishBase describes the species as oviparous with distinct pairing during breeding, meaning ripe individuals pair off around spawning rather than simply broadcasting eggs into a crowd. As a temperate species, spawning activity in the wild is tied to the seasonal warm-up of spring, following a cooler winter period — the reverse of the year-round or wet-season triggers seen in many tropical loaches.
Reliable external sexing detail is not well documented for this species in the sources available, though as with related Cobitis, ripe females are typically noticeably deeper-bodied than males when in spawning condition. Keepers attempting to breed it should expect to replicate a genuine cool winter followed by a warming spring, not a constant tropical temperature.
Breeding
Cobitis sinensis is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: spawning fish release adhesive eggs among plants, and the adults take no further part once eggs are laid. This is standard behaviour for the spined and pond loaches, and it stands in contrast to the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups — no such behaviour occurs in this family.
What sets this species apart from most loaches in the hobby is that, being one of the temperate Cobitidae, it is among the minority that have actually been pond- or tank-spawned by keepers, in the same way the European spined loaches and the dojo/weather loach (Misgurnus) sometimes are. Success generally follows a real seasonal cycle — a cool winter rest, ideally close to the species' tolerated low temperatures, followed by a gradual spring warm-up — rather than the constant tropical conditions that suppress spawning in coldwater fish and that make most loaches essentially unbred in captivity.
In the aquarium
The single most important husbandry point for Cobitis sinensis is temperature: this is a coldwater fish, comfortable around 59–68 °F and tolerant of a much wider range, and it should not be kept in a heated tropical community at 77–82 °F. An unheated tank kept in a cool room, or an outdoor pond in temperate climates, suits it far better than a standard tropical setup, and it can be housed alongside other coldwater or subtropical species rather than typical tropical community fish.
A soft sand substrate is essential for both natural sifting behaviour and to protect its scaleless skin from abrasion; it is a social species best kept in a group of four or more, where it settles and behaves more naturally than singly or in pairs. Because it is near-scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, so half-doses and gentle products are the safer approach if disease treatment becomes necessary — and as with many loaches, it can be among the first fish in a tank to show early signs of ich.
Conservation
Cobitis sinensis was assessed by the IUCN Red List on 12 January 2011 and listed as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution and general commonness across streams in China and Korea. No major range-wide threats are documented for the species at this assessment.
As with many small, widespread stream fish, localised pressures such as water pollution, stream modification and habitat degradation can affect individual populations even where the species as a whole remains secure. It is present in the aquarium trade on a modest scale, generally sold under names like Siberian or Chinese spiny loach, and is not known to depend on large-scale wild collection in the way some more heavily traded loach species do.
