Taxonomy & naming
Mustura subhashi was formally described in 2021 by Choudhury, Das, Bharali, Sarma, Tyagi, Lal and Sarma in the Journal of Fish Biology, as part of the ongoing revision of Northeast Indian nemacheilid loaches that has split the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Schistura into a growing number of narrower genera. Mustura is one of those recently erected genera, and M. subhashi was one of its founding species.
The species epithet honors Subhash Chandra Dey, recognizing his contribution to the study or collection of the region's fishes. As with many recent Northeast Indian nemacheilid descriptions, the taxonomy of this group continues to be actively revised, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination — which is retained here as Mustura subhashi.
Morphology
Mustura subhashi is a small, slender stone loach, distinguished from its close relatives chiefly by its colour pattern: the original description notes 14–23 dark markings along the body, a count used alongside other meristic and morphometric characters to separate it from congeners. Beyond this diagnostic feature, detailed morphological data for the species is sparse in the available literature.
As a nemacheilid it shares the family's general body plan — an elongate, cylindrical to slightly compressed body, a subterminal mouth suited to grazing and picking food from the streambed, and, in many genera of this family, a small erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin. No maximum length has been reliably reported for this species in the sources available, so no size figure is given here rather than risk quoting an invented number.
Habitat
The type locality is the Dikal River, a north-bank tributary of the Brahmaputra drainage in Arunachal Pradesh, in the far northeastern corner of India where the Himalayan foothills feed a dense network of clear, fast-flowing streams. Like other stone and brook loaches of the region, it is a fish of cool-to-mild, well-oxygenated, flowing hill-stream water rather than warm, still lowland habitat.
No detailed water-chemistry data — temperature, pH, substrate composition — was captured in the sources reviewed for this profile. Given the general character of Brahmaputra tributary streams in this part of Arunachal Pradesh, a cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream environment is a reasonable inference, but specific figures are not available and are not invented here.
Feeding

If it were ever encountered — most plausibly via a specialist wild-collected shipment from Northeast India — the sensible baseline drawn from its family would be a cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream setup with a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate, strong water movement, and the caution that nemacheilid loaches, like other scaleless-skinned loaches, tend to be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally.
For now, this species belongs to the scientific record rather than to the hobby, and any care guidance beyond that general caution would be speculation rather than documented fact.

Mustura subhashi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status.
