Mustura taretensis is a tiny stone loach known only from the Taret River, a tributary of the Chindwin drainage in Manipur, northeastern India. Described in 2021, it is a genuinely obscure fish — a single-river endemic in the family Nemacheilidae, the largest and least-known family of true loaches, whose members live as small, bold micro-predators of cool, clear, fast-flowing streams. Nothing about this species has entered the aquarium trade, and much of its biology remains undocumented; the honest picture is one of a recently discovered, narrowly distributed stream fish rather than a hobby animal.

Taxonomy & naming

Mustura taretensis was formally described in 2021 by Chinglemba, Rameshori and Vishwanath in Zootaxa, based on specimens collected from the Taret River at Saibol Village in Tengnoupal District, Manipur, India — the type locality that gives the species its epithet. It belongs to the genus Mustura, erected by Maurice Kottelat in 2018 to house a group of small nemacheilid loaches that had previously been shuffled between Schistura and Physoschistura without a stable home. The genus name itself nods to that history: it blends the Latin mysterium (mystery) with Schistura, alluding to the ambiguous taxonomic path its species had taken before Mustura gave them a proper placement.

The species sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and one still being actively revised as researchers work through Asia's freshwater drainages describing narrow-range endemics like this one. As a 2021 description with no recorded synonymy, Mustura taretensis has not (yet) been subject to the kind of generic reshuffling that has affected many of its relatives, but given how recently and how locally it was described, its taxonomic status should be treated as provisional rather than settled.

Morphology

Mustura taretensis is a small stone loach: the holotype, a female, measured 2 in standard length, with paratypes ranging from 1.5–2 in SL — a genuinely diminutive fish even by nemacheilid standards. The original description characterizes it by a distinctive colour pattern of 12–13 dark bars crossing the flank, 11–16 saddle-like blotches along the back, a rhomboid marking on the head, and a black bar at the base of the tail (the basicaudal bar), a combination used to distinguish it from closely related congeners.

As a member of Nemacheilidae, it shares the family's general body plan: an elongate, cylindrical to slightly compressed body suited to living tight against the substrate in fast water, and the reduced, deeply embedded scales typical of true loaches, which leave the skin functionally naked and sensitive to handling and chemical stress. The primary description does not report an erectile suborbital spine for this species — that structure is a hallmark of the botiid loaches rather than the nemacheilids, which instead rely on their small size, cryptic coloration and substrate-hugging habits to avoid predators.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Taret River, a stream in the Chindwin River drainage of Manipur in northeastern India — part of the greater Irrawaddy river system. Collected specimens came from cool, clear, swift-flowing water over a bed of gravel, cobble and boulders, with lush algal growth on the exposed rock surfaces, in shallow stretches around 2–3 ft deep. This is classic nemacheilid habitat: a fast, well-oxygenated hill stream rather than a slow lowland river.

No laboratory water-chemistry readings — exact temperature or pH — were recorded alongside the type series, so those figures are genuinely data-sparse rather than omitted by oversight. What is documented is the community it shares the river with: the type series was collected alongside eight other fish species, including cyprinids, other botiid and sisorid catfishes and bagrid catfishes, painting a picture of a diverse small hill-stream fish assemblage rather than an isolated population.

Feeding

Stomach content examination of two female specimens found unidentifiable plant material, suggesting at least a partly herbivorous diet grazed from the algae-covered cobble and boulder surfaces that characterize its home stream. This fits the general pattern for small nemacheilid stone loaches, which typically forage over the streambed as opportunistic micro-predators, picking at algae, biofilm and small invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans wedged among the gravel.

Beyond the limited stomach-content data from the type series, nothing further has been published on the diet of Mustura taretensis, and no aquarium feeding observations exist since the species has not entered the trade. The safest characterization is a bottom-grazing micro-predator/herbivore of fast, clear water — consistent with its relatives in the genus and family, but not yet documented in the same depth as more widely studied nemacheilids.

Mating

Almost nothing is documented about courtship or reproductive behaviour in this species. The two female paratypes examined for gonad condition carried unripe ovaries at the time of collection, meaning no direct evidence of spawning condition, seasonal timing or courtship was captured in the original description. No male reproductive data or sexual dimorphism has been reported.

In the absence of species-specific observations, the reasonable inference — drawn from the broader biology of Nemacheilidae rather than from direct evidence for this species — is a stream-spawning pattern typical of stone and brook loaches, in which ripe adults release eggs over gravel in flowing water rather than engaging in any elaborate pairing or courtship display. This should be read as an informed extrapolation, not a documented fact for Mustura taretensis.

Breeding

No breeding — wild or captive — has been documented for Mustura taretensis. The species has never been kept or spawned in the aquarium, and the primary literature offers only the incidental note that examined females carried unripe ovaries, which is not evidence of any particular reproductive strategy beyond confirming the population was not in active spawning condition when collected.

By extension from its family, the expected mode is that of a typical stone and brook loach: an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. Nemacheilids as a group are rarely bred in captivity and are frequently data-sparse on this point even for species that are established in the hobby — for a single-river endemic like this one, described only in 2021 and never traded, the honest statement is that breeding biology is essentially unknown.

In the aquarium

Mustura taretensis is not an aquarium fish. It has no presence in the ornamental trade, no hobbyist care reports exist, and given its status as a newly described, single-river endemic from a remote part of Manipur, that is unlikely to change. There is no basis in the available literature for tank size, water parameter or feeding recommendations specific to this species.

What can be said is inferred from its habitat and its family: as a small nemacheilid from cool, clear, fast, highly oxygenated hill-stream water flowing over gravel, cobble and algae-dusted rock, any theoretical husbandry would need to replicate strong flow, high dissolved oxygen and a hard, clean substrate rather than the still, warm, soft-water setups suited to many lowland tropical loaches. As with other scaleless true loaches, it would likely be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications. This remains speculative extrapolation, not established care information.

Conservation

Mustura taretensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is correctly recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a status the assessment process has not actually reached. As a species described only in 2021 and known from a single river system, this is unsurprising — many recently described nemacheilid stone loaches from the eastern Himalaya and Indo-Burma region have not yet been through formal Red List review.

What is documented is that the species is currently known only from the Taret River in Tengnoupal District, Manipur — a single-locality endemic by the evidence available so far, though further surveying of the wider Chindwin drainage could reveal a broader range. Single-river endemics in this region face the generic pressures common to small Indo-Burmese hill streams: habitat alteration, deforestation-driven siltation and water abstraction, but no species-specific threat assessment or population trend data exists for this fish. There is no evidence it is targeted by the aquarium trade.
