Taxonomy & naming
Mustura walongensis was described by Bhaskar Tamang and Rajeev Kumar Sinha in 2016 (Zootaxa 4173.3.6), originally placed in the genus Physoschistura as Physoschistura walongensis. Like much of the stone-loach family Nemacheilidae, the genus-level classification of this group has been repeatedly reshuffled as researchers re-examine the relationships among Schistura, Physoschistura, Mustura and their relatives; the species is now recognised under the genus Mustura. The Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, and this article keeps the genus as given, Mustura.
The species epithet walongensis refers to Walong, a settlement in Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh, near the type locality. The family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches — is the largest of the loach families, made up mostly of small, drab-to-boldly-barred fish confined to individual river systems or even single streams across South, Southeast and Central Asia.
Morphology
The type series described by Tamang and Sinha consisted of a male holotype of 2 in standard length and a series of paratypes of mixed sexes ranging from 1.5–2 in SL — a genuinely small fish even by stone-loach standards. The body carries 11–18 irregular vertical bars along its flanks, an incomplete lateral line running with 71–89 canal pores, and a forked caudal fin.
As in other nemacheilid stone loaches, Mustura walongensis has a rounded suborbital flap rather than the rigid erectile suborbital spine of the botiid loaches, and the skin is essentially scaleless — a trait shared across the loach superfamily that makes these fish sensitive to heavy medication and slow to recover from skin damage. Beyond the measurements and counts in the original description, no further morphological study of the species has been published.
Habitat
The species is known only from its type locality in the Lohit River system, part of the upper Brahmaputra River basin, in Arunachal Pradesh, northeastern India, at an altitude of about 1,315 ft. This places it in a cold, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated Himalayan mountain stream — the classic habitat of the stone and brook loaches, which cling to a clear, high-gradient watercourse running over stone and gravel rather than the warm, still or blackwater conditions associated with many other tropical aquarium fish.
No published data describe the stream's temperature regime, substrate composition or seasonal flow in detail beyond the type-locality record itself. Given the altitude and the ecology of related Himalayan nemacheilids, a cool, swift, clear-water torrent is the reasonable inference, but this has not been directly documented for the species.
Feeding
No dietary study of Mustura walongensis has been published. Based on the well-documented feeding ecology of other stone and brook loaches in fast Himalayan streams, it is reasonable to expect this species is a benthic micro-predator, picking small invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae and tiny crustaceans from among stones and gravel in the current — but this is an inference from its relatives, not a confirmed observation for this species.
Nothing is recorded about feeding behaviour, activity period, or any dietary specialisation for this species, and none should be assumed beyond the general pattern typical of its family.
Mating
No observations of courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism in life have been published for Mustura walongensis. The original description notes only that the type series included both sexes among the paratypes, without describing external differences between them.
As with feeding, any statement about its reproductive behaviour would have to be drawn from related nemacheilid species rather than from direct study of this fish, and the honest position is that essentially nothing specific is known.
Breeding
There is no record of Mustura walongensis being bred, or even kept, in captivity. Stone and brook loaches as a group are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast water with no parental care, and are rarely bred by hobbyists — most, including narrow-range Himalayan endemics like this one, have never been kept in aquaria at all.
Given the complete absence of trade or captive history for this species, its breeding biology should be considered unknown rather than assumed to follow any particular pattern.
In the aquarium
Mustura walongensis is not a fish anyone will encounter in the aquarium trade. It has no history of collection for the hobby, no care literature, and — being known from a single high-altitude stream on the far side of the Himalaya — essentially no realistic path into commercial trade. Loaches Online and other hobbyist references have no entry for it.
If a fish matching this description were ever encountered, the general expectations for a small Himalayan stone loach would apply: cool, clear, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over a stone or gravel substrate, and the same caution around medication that applies to all scaleless loaches. But this is a general inference from the family, not species-specific guidance, and no one should treat it as a substitute for real husbandry data that simply does not exist yet.
Conservation
Mustura walongensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is a common situation for small-range Himalayan stream endemics described in the last couple of decades — the pace of taxonomic discovery in this region has outrun the pace of conservation assessment.
As a species apparently confined to a single stream system near Walong in Arunachal Pradesh, it would be inherently vulnerable to any localised habitat disturbance — damming, water diversion, pollution or sedimentation — simply by virtue of its narrow known range, though no specific threats have been documented in the literature. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade pressure on this species.
