Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus argyrogaster was formally described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2021, in a paper distinguishing it from a similar-looking species it had long been confused with, Nemacheilus longistriatus. The type locality is the Xe Kong, a Mekong tributary draining Attapeu and Xe Kong provinces in southern Laos, and the species is currently known only from that drainage.
The genus placement is provisional. Kottelat's original description places the species in Nemacheilus with a degree of caution, reflecting the wider taxonomic churn in the stone-loach family Nemacheilidae, where the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been repeatedly split into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others as researchers work through the group species by species. This article follows the original combination, Nemacheilus argyrogaster, as given in the 2021 description; any future revision would need to be tracked against the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names.
Morphology
Like other Nemacheilidae, N. argyrogaster is a small, elongate, essentially scaleless stone loach built for holding position on the bed of a fast stream. Its most distinctive field mark is a bold black stripe running along the midline of the body, sharply separating a yellowish-brown dorsal surface from a silvery-white belly — the 'silver belly' that gives the species its name. The back and upper flanks carry a series of 14 to 19 thin, narrow saddle-markings running across the dorsal midline.
Mature males show clear sexual dimorphism: a globulous, tubercle-covered flap of skin beneath the eye (the suborbital region), and a thickened pectoral fin bearing unculiferous pads — small keratinised breeding structures used to grip the substrate or a mate during spawning. As in other Nemacheilidae, an erectile spine sits in a groove below the eye in this genus more broadly, and the skin is essentially naked, without the overlapping scales of many other fish groups — a point that matters for handling and medication. No maximum length has been published for this species; it should be assumed to be a small stone loach in keeping with its genus, likely well under 4 in, but this is not confirmed and is not stated here as fact.
Habitat
Nemacheilus argyrogaster is known only from the Xe Kong, a Mekong River tributary in Attapeu and Xe Kong provinces, southern Laos. It occupies moderate to fast-flowing water over a pebble-and-stone substrate, the classic habitat of a stone loach: clear, well-oxygenated, current-swept stream water rather than still or sluggish backwaters.
No published data exist on the temperature or pH range at the type locality. Given the species' fast-flow, stony-bottomed habitat in a Southeast Asian river system, a cool-to-warm tropical stream regime with strong oxygenation and current is the reasonable inference for its native water, in keeping with other Nemacheilidae from similar habitats — but no specific figures are confirmed for this species, and none are asserted here.
Feeding
No diet has been published for Nemacheilus argyrogaster specifically. As a member of the Nemacheilidae inhabiting fast, clear, stony streams, it can be expected to forage as most stone loaches do — as a bottom-dwelling micro-predator picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny aquatic prey from among the stones and pebbles of the streambed.
This is inference from its family and habitat, not a documented feeding record for the species. No aquarium feeding history exists to draw on, since the species is not established in the hobby.
Mating
The primary description documents clear sexual dimorphism in mature males: a globulous, tubercle-bearing suborbital flap and a thickened pectoral fin with unculiferous pads, both breeding structures typical of male stone loaches in spawning condition. No courtship or spawning behaviour has been directly observed or published for this species.
Based on these dimorphic structures and on what is known of Nemacheilidae generally, males likely use the modified pectoral fin and suborbital flap to grip a female or the substrate during a brief spawning event over gravel in fast water, in keeping with the family's typical egg-scattering strategy. No wild or captive spawning has been documented for N. argyrogaster.
Breeding
Nemacheilus argyrogaster has never been bred in the aquarium — it has essentially no aquarium history at all, having been described only in 2021 from a single Laotian drainage. In keeping with the Nemacheilidae generally, the expected breeding mode is that of a typical stone loach: an egg-scatterer releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afforded to eggs or fry.
This is an inference from the family, not a documented record for the species. Data on this species' reproduction, whether in the wild or in captivity, simply does not exist yet.
In the aquarium
Nemacheilus argyrogaster is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense — it is a recently described stream endemic with no known trade or hobby history. Anyone encountering it, whether in the field or through a specialist importer, should treat it as a fast-water, well-oxygenated stone loach in the mould of its Nemacheilidae relatives: cool-to-moderate flowing water over a stony substrate, strong filtration and oxygenation, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods rather than flake.
As with other loaches, the essentially scaleless skin common to the family means unusual sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications should be assumed as a precaution, even though no specific data exist for this species. Given how little is known, care recommendations here are extrapolated from the wider stone-loach group rather than drawn from any direct experience with N. argyrogaster.
Conservation
Nemacheilus argyrogaster has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category — it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a status. This is unsurprising for a species described as recently as 2021 from a single river drainage.
It is currently known only from the Xe Kong, a Mekong tributary in Attapeu and Xe Kong provinces, southern Laos, making it by definition a narrow-range stream endemic. Species restricted to a single drainage in this way are inherently vulnerable to localised pressures — damming, sedimentation, deforestation and water extraction are widespread threats across Mekong tributaries in Laos — but no population trend or threat assessment has been published for this species specifically, and none is asserted here.
