Nemacheilus banar is a small stone loach known only from the Sesan and Ba river drainages of Central Vietnam, part of a wave of nemacheiline species described in a single 2001 revision of the region's streams. It is a slim, boldly blotched benthic fish of fast, clear, rocky rivers, reaching barely 3 in and living an obscure, poorly documented life on the stream bed. Like most of its relatives it is a bold micro-predator of a cool, fast-flowing habitat rather than a still, warm aquarium, and almost nothing is recorded of its breeding — it is not a fish that has been bred, or apparently even closely studied, in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Nemacheilus banar was described by Jörg Freyhof and Dmitry Serov in 2001, as part of a single paper — "Nemacheiline loaches from Central Vietnam with descriptions of a new genus and 14 new species" (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 12(2): 133–191) — that overhauled the known stone-loach fauna of the region. The holotype is held at the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK 28588) in Bonn.

It remains placed in Nemacheilus, one of several genera that were split out of the old, catch-all "Noemacheilus"/"Nemacheilus" as the family Nemacheilidae — the true or stone loaches — was progressively revised through DNA and morphological work in the 2000s and 2010s. Many superficially similar Southeast Asian stone loaches have since been reassigned to Schistura, Homaloptera-adjacent genera, or other segregates, so older literature and aquarium-trade labels for Vietnamese nemacheilines should be treated cautiously; here the species is kept under its described combination, Nemacheilus banar.

Morphology

This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach reaching only around 3 in standard length, with adults typically smaller. The body carries a row of 8–13 dark blotches along the flank and a further 9–15 blotches along the back, giving it a broken, disruptive pattern suited to camouflage against gravel and cobble. The dorsal fin carries 14 soft rays and no spines; the anal fin has 9 soft rays and no spines — typical nemacheiline counts.

As in other members of the family, the skin bears no true scales in the usual sense — Nemacheilidae are essentially naked-skinned or very finely scaled loaches — which leaves them thin-skinned and sensitive to medication and poor water quality. Where visible in related nemacheilines, a small erectile suborbital spine may be present beneath the eye, though this is far less developed than in the botiid loaches. Detailed morphometric and meristic data beyond the original description are sparse for this species.

Habitat

Nemacheilus banar is known only from the Sesan and Ba river systems of Central Vietnam — tributaries that drain the Vietnamese Central Highlands, the Sesan flowing into the Mekong basin and the Ba running independently to the South China Sea. Both are fast-flowing rivers with rocky, gravel-dominated beds in the reaches this species occupies.

Adults are found over rock and large gravel substrate in the main current, while juveniles occupy calmer sandy margins with moderate flow — a common nursery pattern in benthic stream fishes, where young fish avoid the strongest current until they are strong enough to hold station in it. The water is tropical freshwater, benthopelagic in habit, with the fish living close to the bottom rather than in open water.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Nemacheilus banar, but its body plan and habitat place it firmly among the nemacheiline micro-predators: a bottom-hugging forager that picks small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates — from between stones and gravel in fast-flowing water.

In the aquarium, fish of this type generally need sinking foods delivered at the substrate rather than relying on surface flake, which they are poorly equipped to compete for. Small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) alongside quality sinking pellets or wafers would suit its likely natural diet, though no aquarium feeding record exists for this specific species.

Mating

No description of courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism has been published for Nemacheilus banar. Data on reproduction in this species is sparse to the point of being effectively absent from the literature reviewed here, and nothing should be assumed about its mating behaviour beyond what is typical of the broader family.

Breeding

As in most Nemacheilidae, Nemacheilus banar is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care — the general pattern for stone and brook loaches. This is inferred from the family's well-documented reproductive strategy rather than from any direct observation of this species, for which no breeding record — wild or captive — appears in the available sources.

The species is not known to have been bred in the aquarium. Like the great majority of small nemacheiline stone loaches, it is essentially unavailable in the hobby and unstudied outside its original taxonomic description, so this section is necessarily brief and honestly incomplete rather than speculative.

In the aquarium

Nemacheilus banar is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear to be traded, and no husbandry account exists in the sources reviewed here. Any care outline is therefore drawn from its known biology rather than from keeper experience: it comes from cool-to-warm, fast, well-oxygenated, rocky-bottomed river water, and a tank attempting to house it would need to reproduce that current and oxygenation rather than the still, soft water often used for lowland tropicals.

As with other thin-skinned, effectively scaleless nemacheilines, it should be assumed sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, warranting caution and reduced dosing if treatment is ever needed. Given the total absence of trade or keeper reports, this species is best regarded as one for institutional or specialist collections rather than the general hobby.

Conservation

Nemacheilus banar is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, reflecting its very restricted known range — confined to the Sesan and Ba river drainages of Central Vietnam — which makes it inherently susceptible to localized threats such as damming, water abstraction, sedimentation and pollution across a small number of river systems.

As a narrow-range stream endemic with no recorded role in the aquarium trade, its conservation profile is driven by habitat pressure in its home rivers rather than by collection. No population trend or detailed threat assessment is available beyond the Vulnerable listing itself in the sources reviewed here.
