Taxonomy & naming
Neohomaloptera johorensis was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1944, on the basis of specimens collected from a brook near Simpang Renggam in the Kluang district of Johor, the southernmost state of Peninsular Malaysia — hence the specific epithet johorensis. The parentheses around Herre's name signal that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved to Neohomaloptera.
The genus Neohomaloptera is monotypic: johorensis is its only species. It belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream or torrent loaches of South and Southeast Asia, and it sits within the broader loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Neohomaloptera johorensis as the current valid combination. GBIF confirms the authority as (Herre, 1944), and the species is registered under GBIF taxon key 2358750.
Morphology
The lizard loach is a very small fish, reaching somewhere between 17 and 1 in in standard length depending on the source — a size roughly equivalent to a large fingernail. Its body is strikingly flattened top-to-bottom (dorsoventrally depressed), with a broad, flat head and a smooth, convex underside that acts as an adhesive surface against rock. The pectoral and pelvic fins are oriented horizontally and spread wide, further anchoring the fish against the substrate in fast current — an arrangement convergent with many other hillstream balitorids.
The overall impression is of a small, streamlined disc on legs, an appearance that earns it the trade name "lizard loach." In conditions of low pH the body reportedly takes on an orange cast. Like other balitorid loaches the skin carries only tiny embedded scales and is, for practical purposes, near-scaleless to the touch — a detail that has consequences for medication sensitivity. There is no prominent erectile suborbital spine of the kind found in botiid loaches; Balitoridae do not share that feature.
Habitat
Neohomaloptera johorensis is native to clear, fast-flowing streams and small rivers of southern Peninsular Malaysia — recorded from Johor, Selangor, and Perak states — and from West Kalimantan in Indonesian Borneo. The type locality is a brook near Simpang Renggam in the Kluang district of Johor. It is a Sundaland endemic, confined to the streams of the Malay Peninsula and northwestern Borneo.
The water in its native streams is cool to warm, soft, highly oxygenated and acidic: temperatures of 73–79 °F and pH values in the range of 3.5 to 6.5 are recorded from the SeriouslyFish profile, with Loaches Online noting pH 6.3–7.0 and moderate hardness up to around 12° dH in maintained aquaria. The current is strong; this is a rheophilic species, one that lives in the current rather than hiding from it. Substrates are rock and gravel over which biofilm, diatoms and algae grow.
Feeding
Neohomaloptera johorensis is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it rasps diatoms, microalgae, and biofilm from the surface of rocks in fast-flowing water — the same feeding mode as other hillstream balitorids. This dietary specialisation has a direct implication for captive care: the fish requires a mature tank with well-established algae and biofilm growth on its rocks and glass. A bare, newly set-up tank offers it nothing to eat from the surfaces it naturally works, and starvation is the most common cause of death in newly acquired specimens.
In the aquarium, biofilm grazing should be supplemented with small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro worms and bloodworm — and blanched vegetables. Both SeriouslyFish and Loaches Online note a preference for live and fresh foods and a reluctance to accept processed dry foods. The fish is not an easy feeder to establish and should not be purchased for a tank that is not already running a mature, algae-covered rockscape.
Mating
No detailed observations of mating behaviour exist for Neohomaloptera johorensis in either wild or captive settings. Sexing the species in the aquarium is not documented in available sources, and no reliable external dimorphism has been described. As with the majority of hillstream loaches, both sexes are likely cryptic in appearance.
In the wild the species is presumed to be a seasonal spawner, tied to stream hydrology and monsoon cycles as is typical for rheophilic stream fishes in Sundaland. The precise triggers — changes in flow, temperature or water chemistry — have not been studied for this species specifically.
Breeding
Neohomaloptera johorensis has not been bred in the aquarium. Both SeriouslyFish and Loaches Online confirm this explicitly, and there are no published accounts of captive spawning. Like most hillstream loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits eggs among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care — the eggs are left to develop in the current. The few hillstream loach species for which spawning in aquaria has been documented (notably Sewellia lineolata) require a mature, strongly-flowing river-style tank with well-established biofilm and a stable, cool, highly oxygenated environment: conditions that take months to establish and are rarely achieved in ordinary community tanks.
For this species the honest position is that breeding in captivity is not documented and should not be expected. Keepers should acquire the fish for its own qualities, not with a view to reproduction.
In the aquarium
Neohomaloptera johorensis is a specialist fish for the experienced hillstream keeper, not a general community loach. Its small adult size — around 1 in — might suggest a nano-tank candidate, but its requirements are exacting. It needs a mature, established tank with strong water movement: SeriouslyFish recommends a filter or pump delivering four to five times the tank volume in turnover per hour. The water must be cool (73–79 °F), soft, acidic to neutral, and highly oxygenated. A warm, still tropical community tank will kill it through a combination of insufficient oxygen and absence of biofilm food.
The substrate and decor must be rock-heavy and thoroughly colonised with algae and biofilm before the fish arrives — this is a non-negotiable feeding requirement. Loaches Online notes that it can become orange-coloured under acidic conditions and that it is a shy species best kept with small, calm tank mates. Being near-scaleless, it will absorb medications readily and should be treated with caution if disease arises — half-doses and copper-free treatments are advised. Given its rarity in the trade, acclimation should be slow and the tank conditions confirmed before purchase.
Conservation
Neohomaloptera johorensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 30 January 2019. As the sole member of a monotypic genus endemic to southern Sundaland — southern Peninsular Malaysia and West Kalimantan — it has a naturally restricted range, but is not considered at immediate risk of extinction under current conditions.
The broader freshwater fauna of Sundaland faces pressure from deforestation, conversion of peat swamp and riparian land, and stream sedimentation across the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. These habitat pressures affect the clean, fast-flowing, acidic streams that Neohomaloptera johorensis requires. The species appears rarely in the aquarium trade, and wild collection is unlikely to represent a significant pressure at present, but its narrow range and specialised habitat make it inherently vulnerable to future land-use change.
