Pangio anguillaris is a slender, eel-like kuhli loach from Southeast Asia — a near-scaleless, nocturnal burrower that spends its days wedged beneath driftwood or buried in fine sand, emerging after dark to sift the substrate for small invertebrates. Described by Léon Vaillant in 1902 and placed in the genus Pangio (family Cobitidae), it is one of the least-known members of a group notorious for data scarcity: most Pangio species are stream endemics with a narrow natural range, and aquarium records for this particular species are sparse. What is known follows the kuhli template — soft sand, warm acidic water, gentle flow, and a small social group are the essentials — and getting those basics right is far more important than any species-specific detail.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio anguillaris was described by the French zoologist Léon Vaillant in 1902, originally in the broader genus Acanthophthalmus, which was historically used for many eel-like loaches now placed in Pangio. The parentheses around the authority name signal that the original genus assignment has changed: the species is now placed in Pangio Blyth, 1860, within the family Cobitidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Pangio anguillaris (Vaillant, 1902) as a valid species; older literature or trade sources may use Acanthophthalmus anguillaris as a synonym.

Pangio is the genus holding the true kuhli loaches — a group of some 30+ small, worm-like Southeast Asian cobitids distinguished by their elongate body, reduced scalation, and burrowing lifestyle. The genus has undergone repeated revision, and species boundaries within it remain incompletely resolved; several undescribed species circulate in the trade under the kuhli label. The type locality for P. anguillaris is not well established in accessible literature, and distributional data are limited.

Morphology

Like all Pangio, P. anguillaris is extremely elongate and laterally compressed, with a smooth, worm-like profile that enables it to slide through fine substrate and into tight crevices. The body is effectively naked to the touch: the scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin with little protective armour — a trait shared across kuhli loaches and the reason they are sensitive to sharp substrates and to medications absorbed through the body surface.

The head is small and slightly flattened; four pairs of barbels surround the subterminal mouth. Like other cobitids it carries a bifurcate suborbital spine (the loachian erectile defence mechanism) beneath each eye, though this is less prominent in Pangio than in the botiid loaches. Colouration is variable across the genus; P. anguillaris is recorded as having a pale to brownish body with darker patterning, though precise colour descriptions are sparse in accessible sources. Adult size is small, consistent with the genus; most Pangio reach 3–4 in total length, and P. anguillaris is not known to exceed that range.

Habitat

Pangio anguillaris is a Southeast Asian freshwater fish. The genus Pangio as a whole spans the Malay Peninsula, the islands of Sundaland (Sumatra, Borneo, Java), and parts of mainland Indochina — a distribution shaped by the Pleistocene land connections of the region. Specific locality data for P. anguillaris are sparse in accessible sources, but the species fits the characteristic kuhli habitat: slow to gently flowing lowland streams and forest rivulets with fine sandy or silty beds, submerged leaf litter, wood and root tangles providing cover, and water that is warm, soft, and often slightly acidic under closed-canopy forest.

The water chemistry of such streams is shaped by organic matter leaching from the substrate and surrounding forest; pH commonly falls below 7.0, hardness is low, and tannins give the water a faint amber tint. Flow is gentle to moderate. These are not rivers swept by monsoon floods but sheltered secondary streams and swamp margins where fine sediment accumulates — precisely the environment that rewards a burrowing, sand-sifting lifestyle.

Feeding

Pangio anguillaris is a micro-omnivore that sifts the substrate for food. In nature the diet consists of small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similar prey — plus detritus and organic particles encountered while burrowing through fine sediment. The fish feeds predominantly after dark, when it leaves cover and actively works the substrate surface and upper layers of sand.

In the aquarium the practical consequence is that P. anguillaris is easily underfed: it does not compete at the surface for flake food, and tankmates are often faster and more conspicuous. Feeding a portion of sinking foods — small sinking pellets, frozen or live bloodworm, tubifex, or micro-worms — directly onto the substrate after lights-out ensures the loaches receive their share. A varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrate foods alongside a quality sinking pellet keeps the fish in good condition. They should not be expected to subsist on scraps left by other fish.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Pangio anguillaris is not well documented; as with most small Pangio species, published information on sexing is sparse. In the broader genus, ripe females are reported to be noticeably plumper across the body when in breeding condition, and males may be slightly slimmer, but these differences are subtle and useful only in well-conditioned adults. No reliable external markers for sex have been described for this species specifically.

The conditions that promote reproductive readiness in wild kuhli loaches are not fully understood. Seasonal variation in water temperature, rainfall, and day length likely plays a role, as it does for many small Southeast Asian stream fishes. Recreating these environmental cues in a home aquarium is difficult, and the breeding behaviour of P. anguillaris in captivity has not been well documented in accessible aquarium literature.

Breeding

Pangio anguillaris is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria. The kuhli loaches as a group are among the more challenging small fish to spawn in captivity: they are egg-scatterers with no parental care, and the spawning trigger is poorly understood. When kuhli-group loaches do breed in aquaria, they reportedly scatter small, greenish adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants or fine-leaved vegetation near the water surface; the eggs receive no parental attention and the adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs. Larvae are tiny and require infusoria or similar micro-foods at first.

For P. anguillaris specifically, no detailed spawning accounts are available in accessible sources. The trade is largely supplied by wild-collected fish, not by captive breeding. A keeper should acquire this species with no expectation of breeding success; observing the fish's nocturnal burrowing and foraging behaviour is reward enough in a well-arranged species or community tank.

In the aquarium

The single most important element of P. anguillaris husbandry is the substrate: fine, soft sand — not gravel, not coarse aragonite, not bare glass. These loaches are obligate burrowers; they dive headfirst into the substrate, sleep buried, and forage by sifting sand through the gills. Sharp or coarse material causes abrasion wounds on the snout and body that become infected, and a bare bottom deprives the fish of their core behaviour. Pool filter sand or a dedicated fine aquarium sand at 2 in or more depth is the standard recommendation.

P. anguillaris is peaceful, inoffensive to tankmates, and best kept in a small group of four to six or more. Solo or paired specimens become secretive to the point of invisibility; a group is livelier and more active in the open. They are compatible with small, non-aggressive community fish that share their water-chemistry requirements. The tank must be tightly covered — kuhli loaches escape readily through any gap, and losses to drying on the floor are not uncommon.

As near-scaleless fish, kuhli loaches are sensitive to copper-based medications and absorb treatments rapidly through the skin. They should be medicated at half the standard dose at most, and only with products that are explicitly safe for scaleless fish. They are, at the same time, often among the first fish in a tank to develop ich, so they must be watched carefully and treated promptly but gently. Maintain warm (75–82 °F), soft, slightly acidic water with efficient filtration, dim lighting, plenty of cover in the form of driftwood, leaf litter and fine-leaved plants, and feed sinking foods after dark.

Conservation

Pangio anguillaris has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated, and no conservation category can be assigned here. Many Pangio species occupy narrow stream catchments in the lowland forests of Sundaland and the Malay Peninsula — habitats that have experienced severe and ongoing pressure from deforestation, peat swamp drainage, and agricultural conversion. Because P. anguillaris has limited distributional data, it is not possible to assess its current population status with confidence.

The aquarium trade for kuhli-type loaches is primarily supplied by wild collection rather than captive breeding. The scale of collection relative to wild populations is unknown for most Pangio species; where collection is concentrated in a small geographic area, pressure could be locally significant. Without formal assessment or distributional surveys, the conservation position of P. anguillaris remains uncertain. The broader habitat loss affecting Sundaland's freshwater fish communities is the more pressing long-term concern for the genus as a whole.
