Taxonomy & naming
Pangio kuhlii was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1846, with the parentheses around his name indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus — it entered the literature as Cobitis kuhlii, honouring the German naturalist Heinrich Kuhl, who died in Java in 1821 and collected much of the material that underpinned early Dutch-colonial ichthyology. The species was later moved to Acanthophthalmus, a name that persisted in the aquarium trade for decades; the kuhli loaches are still occasionally listed under that combination in older books and retailer stock lists.
The current valid genus is Pangio, reinstated and defined by Maurice Kottelat and Tyson Roberts in a series of revisions to Southeast Asian Cobitidae. The Catalog of Fishes — the international authority for valid fish names — lists the species as Pangio kuhlii (Valenciennes, 1846), placed in the family Cobitidae (the true loaches), subfamily Pangiini. Several closely related banded Pangio species share parts of the range and were historically confused with P. kuhlii; the 2014 revision of Pangio on the Malay Peninsula by Ahmad Amri Mohtar and colleagues separated and described several of these, clarifying that the name P. kuhlii applies to fish from West Java, Sumatra and Borneo rather than a catch-all for every striped eel-loach in the region.
Morphology
The kuhli loach is immediately recognizable: an elongated, laterally compressed, almost cylindrical body that tapers to a pointed snout at one end and a small, forked tail at the other, giving it a distinctly eel-like outline. The ground colour is pale yellowish-orange to pinkish-buff, crossed by 10–15 dark brown to near-black saddles or bands that may merge on the flanks to produce a reticulated or patchy pattern — the natural variation in band width and merging contributes to the old trade name "leopard loach." Adults reach around 4.5 in total length, though most captive specimens are somewhat smaller.
Like other cobitids, the kuhli loach carries a small, erectile suborbital spine — a forked, bifid spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked outward when the fish is stressed or handled. These spines catch readily in nets and can nick fingers, so the fish is best moved in a container rather than lifted in mesh. The body is almost entirely devoid of visible external scales — the skin is smooth and translucent in places — making the kuhli loach one of the most medication-sensitive fish kept in the hobby. Four pairs of barbels surround the downward-pointing, fleshy mouth, well suited to probing sand for invertebrates.
Habitat
Pangio kuhlii is a Sundaland endemic: its native range encompasses West Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) and the Malay Peninsula north to the Phangnga region of southern Thailand. Within that range it inhabits hill streams and lowland waterways of multiple types — from clear, flowing tributaries over sandy substrates to slow-moving blackwater canals and peat-swamp forest drains. The connecting thread is soft, fine sediment in which it can burrow, dense riparian cover, and water that is warm, soft and typically acidic, often deeply stained with tannins and humic acids.
Water temperatures in these habitats run from roughly 75–86 °F, pH from approximately 5.5 to 6.5, and hardness is usually very low. Light levels on the substrate are dim, filtered through forest canopy and further reduced by the dark, tannin-rich water. The fish spends daylight hours buried in sand, coiled under leaf litter or jammed into crevices, emerging at night when the risk of predation is lower and small benthic invertebrates are more active.
Feeding
Pangio kuhlii is a carnivorous sand-sifter in the wild, working the substrate for small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and any other benthic animal small enough to swallow. Its four pairs of barbels are sensory organs for detecting prey in darkness and in soft sediment, and the downward-pointing mouth is built for picking food off and out of the bottom rather than intercepting particles mid-water. It is not a surface feeder.
In the aquarium this translates to a requirement for sinking foods that reach the bottom intact. Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and daphnia, live or frozen tubifex and brine shrimp, and similar small invertebrate-based offerings are all accepted. The critical keeper practice is feeding after lights-out: because the kuhli loach is strictly nocturnal, daytime feeds are largely consumed by tankmates before the kuhli emerges. A small feed deposited on the substrate in the dark — or as the lights dim — is the reliable way to ensure the fish actually gets enough to eat. Underfed kuhlis waste away quietly, hidden from view until the keeper is surprised by a sudden death.
Mating
External sexing of Pangio kuhlii is difficult. The most consistent indicator is body depth: females in reproductive condition are noticeably plumper and rounder in the belly than males of the same length, and mature females may show the greenish tint of developing ovaries visible through the translucent belly wall. Outside of conditioning, the sexes look alike.
Spawning in the wild is reported to occur at or near the water surface, at night or around dawn, with a male entwining his body around the female during egg release. Like most cobitids, P. kuhlii is an egg-scatterer with no mate bond and no parental investment beyond the spawning act itself. Attempts to condition pairs or groups in aquaria are rarely successful, and the precise environmental cues that trigger wild spawning — seasonal changes in water level, temperature, chemistry and food availability associated with the monsoon — are difficult to replicate in a home tank.
Breeding
The kuhli loach is very rarely bred in home aquaria. It is an open-water egg-scatterer: ripe females release 50–100 small, bright green adhesive eggs that stick to plant leaves or roots near the water surface, while males entwine around females to fertilise them. No parental care follows — the adults scatter and the eggs are left to develop alone. Eggs hatch within 24–36 hours at around 79 °F, and the tiny larvae are challenging to raise. Successful home spawnings have been documented but remain uncommon, and no widely replicated conditioning protocol exists.
The kuhli loaches sold in the aquarium trade are largely wild-collected from their native range in Sundaland, unlike the clown loach which is predominantly hormone-farm produced. Hobbyists who want to attempt breeding should condition a group of at least six on varied live and frozen foods, provide dense floating plants such as Java moss or water sprite near the surface for egg adhesion, and keep the tank dimly lit and heavily planted. Raising fry requires very fine, infusoria-scale first foods. The honest expectation is that most kuhli loach keepers will never spawn them, and should enjoy the fish on those terms.
In the aquarium
The kuhli loach is peaceful, long-lived and compatible with a wide range of similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates, but it has specific care requirements that determine whether it thrives or slowly declines. The substrate is non-negotiable: fine, smooth sand — not coarse gravel and not sharp-edged sand — is essential. The kuhli loach burrows continuously, and coarse or sharp substrate abrades its near-scaleless body and its delicate barbels, leading to infections. A 2 in bed of fine sand with a scatter of dried leaf litter over the surface closely mirrors its natural habitat and gives it the security to burrow at will.
Keep at least five together. A solitary kuhli loach hides perpetually and rarely feeds well; a group of five or more is visibly more active, forages across the tank bottom in loose association, and is far more likely to be seen during the day. They will pile into the same hiding spots and lie in loose tangles, which is normal social behaviour rather than distress. The tank should offer dense planting, driftwood, smooth rocks and other cover — PVC tube or coconut shell halves work well — and low to moderate light.
Medication requires particular care. Being near-scaleless, the kuhli loach absorbs copper and many other treatments at a rate that scaled fish do not, and full-strength doses of common ich remedies or copper-based medications can be fatal. At the same time it is often among the first fish in a mixed community to show signs of ich — white spots appear on its smooth skin early. The rule is to treat at half dose, remove activated carbon, and increase aeration. Salt should be avoided entirely, as kuhlis come from soft, fresh, tannin-stained water and tolerate salt poorly. Feed sinking food after lights-out to make certain the fish receives its share; it will not compete with diurnal tankmates for daytime feeds.
Conservation
Pangio kuhlii was assessed for the IUCN Red List in December 2019 and assigned Least Concern status. The species is widespread across Sundaland — Java, Sumatra, Borneo and the Malay Peninsula — and, while localised populations undoubtedly face habitat pressure, no range-wide decline approaching threatened thresholds was identified at that assessment.
The principal long-term threats to kuhli loach habitat are the same forces reshaping freshwater biodiversity across Sundaland more broadly: deforestation, peat-swamp drainage and conversion, and agricultural runoff that alters the chemistry and fine-sediment character of the blackwater streams the species depends on. The aquarium trade draws on wild-collected fish rather than farmed stock, and while export from Indonesia is regulated, the cumulative volume of trade is worth monitoring, particularly for the smaller, more habitat-specific Pangio species that share parts of the range. For P. kuhlii itself, the current status is Least Concern, though the continued health of its peat-forest and forest-stream habitats is not guaranteed.
