Taxonomy & naming
Oreonectes donglanensis was described by Wu in 2013, placed in the genus Oreonectes within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, encompassing hundreds of small Eurasian stream and cave species split across genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and Oreonectes itself. The species epithet donglanensis refers to Donglan, the county-level region of Guangxi associated with its discovery.
Catalog-of-Fishes-era taxonomy in this corner of Nemacheilidae moves quickly: several Oreonectes species, including this one, have subsequently been reassigned by some authors to the genus Troglonectes (i.e., as Troglonectes donglanensis), a genus erected for cave-dwelling relatives of Oreonectes. This article keeps the original combination, Oreonectes donglanensis, as used in its 2013 description and by FishBase; readers encountering it under Troglonectes are looking at the same fish under a proposed alternative genus.
Morphology
This is a small loach: the original description records a size range of roughly 1.5–2.5 in standard length, with the holotype reaching about 3 in total length, and FishBase lists a maximum of about 2 in SL. The body is elongate and cylindrical, typical of the stone-loach build, with an incomplete lateral line and a swim-bladder chamber developed toward the rear of the body — anatomical detail consistent with a life spent pressed against rock and gravel rather than swimming in open water. Colouration is yellowish with dorsal spots and bars.
Like many nemacheilids adapted to cave and karst groundwater habitats, O. donglanensis shows the family's characteristic reduction toward the extremes of subterranean life, though it is not known to be blind or fully depigmented in the way some deep-cave loaches are. The one confirmed point of sexual dimorphism is internal to reproduction rather than visible colour pattern: males possess an enlarged genital papilla, a feature used to distinguish the sexes in preserved and live specimens.
Habitat
The species is known from Andong Town, Xincheng County, Laibin City, in the Hongshui River system of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China, at about 587 ft elevation. The type locality sits within a karst landscape — the limestone terrain of caves, sinkholes and underground drainage typical of this part of southern China — and the fish was collected from small pools formed by groundwater overflow, waters that swell seasonally with the rains rather than flowing as a continuous surface stream.
This places O. donglanensis among the cave- and groundwater-associated nemacheilids, a lifestyle shared with a number of Oreonectes and Troglonectes species across the same karst belt. Precise water chemistry has not been documented in the sources available; what is clear is a cool-to-subtropical, clear, groundwater-fed environment rather than a warm, still, tannin-stained lowland one — this is not a blackwater fish.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for this species. By family and lifestyle it can reasonably be expected to behave as a benthic micro-predator in the general nemacheilid mould, picking small invertebrates and other food items from the bottom of its pools and seepage channels, but this is inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact for O. donglanensis itself. Data on its natural diet is genuinely sparse.
Mating
The only reproductive detail recorded for this species is the enlarged male genital papilla noted in the original description, which allows the sexes to be told apart. Courtship behaviour, spawning triggers and any seasonal pattern tied to the karst groundwater cycle have not been documented in the literature available for this article.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for Oreonectes donglanensis in the aquarium. Stone and brook loaches in general are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast, well-oxygenated water with no parental care, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ, but no confirmed spawning account — wild or captive — exists in the sources consulted here. This is a genuinely data-sparse species rather than one with a documented breeding record, and any claim beyond the general family pattern would be guesswork.
In the aquarium
Oreonectes donglanensis is not an established aquarium fish, and no husbandry record for it could be verified. What can be said comes from its family and habitat: as a small nemacheilid from cool, clear, groundwater-fed karst pools, any attempt at maintaining it would call for clean, well-oxygenated, unpolluted water rather than the warm, soft, still conditions suited to lowland tropical loaches, along with a fine substrate and rockwork reflecting its limestone cave habitat. As with other scaleless loaches, caution with copper-based and full-strength medications would be prudent, though this too is inferred from the family rather than documented for this species specifically. Given how little is known, this is a fish for the record rather than the shopping list.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Oreonectes donglanensis as Least Concern in an evaluation dated 18 January 2024. The species is known only from its type locality and immediate karst region in Guangxi, China, a restricted range typical of many cave-associated nemacheilids in this part of southern China, where groundwater quality and karst hydrology are the relevant pressures rather than any documented aquarium trade — this species is not known to be collected for the hobby.
