Taxonomy & naming
Oreonectes furcocaudalis was described by Zhu and Cao in 1987 and placed in the genus Oreonectes, a group of small nemacheilid loaches largely restricted to the karst cave systems of Guangxi Province in southern China. The genus name Oreonectes comes from the Greek oreos, "mountain," and nectes, "swimmer" — a name coined for surface-dwelling relatives before the genus's cave species were well known. The species epithet furcocaudalis references the shape of the tail (caudal) fin.
The family Nemacheilidae is the largest of the loach families, containing hundreds of small, mostly stream-dwelling species across Eurasia, and it has been repeatedly reshuffled as genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split. Oreonectes sits within this family as one of several genera — alongside Sinocyclocheilus among cyprinids — that have independently evolved cave-adapted, blind lineages in the limestone karst of southern China. Genetic work places Oreonectes furcocaudalis among roughly ten currently recognized Oreonectes species, eight of which are endemic to Guangxi.
Morphology
This is a small loach, reported at around 2.5 in standard length, with the elongate, cylindrical body typical of nemacheilid loaches. As an obligate cave dweller it shows the classic troglobitic suite: degenerate, non-functional eyes and a marked loss of pigmentation, leaving the body pale rather than patterned. A dorsal adipose crest runs from above the origin of the anal fin back to become confluent with the caudal fin, a feature noted in the original description and used to help distinguish it from other Oreonectes.
Like other nemacheilids it is a scaleless-skinned or near-scaleless fish, and — as in many loaches — likely carries the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the broader loach superfamily Cobitoidea, though detailed anatomical accounts specific to this species are not available in the sources at hand. Its build is that of a benthic fish adapted to moving over rock and sediment by touch rather than sight.
Habitat
Oreonectes furcocaudalis is known only from subterranean waters in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China — specifically an outlet of underground water near Rongshui County and Du'an County (Xia'ao Township), with a further specimen documented from a subterranean river in Rong'an County. This places it firmly within the karst cave belt of southern China that has produced numerous independently blind cavefish lineages.
Its environment is permanently dark, cool-to-mild subterranean water flowing through limestone cave systems — a world away from the open, sunlit streams most nemacheilids inhabit. No data on temperature, pH, or flow regime for this species is available in the sources reviewed here; cave systems in this region are generally described as stable, cool to moderate freshwater habitats, but specific figures for this species would be speculation.
Feeding

It is best treated as essentially unbred and unstudied in this respect — no cave-guarding, no mouthbrooding, simply an absence of data.

Oreonectes furcocaudalis has no meaningful presence in the aquarium hobby. It is a highly specialized, blind cave fish restricted to a handful of subterranean localities in Guangxi, collected only for scientific study rather than the trade, and no husbandry information — tank size, water parameters, tankmates, feeding routine — exists in the sources available. Any care guidance would be pure speculation and is deliberately omitted here rather than invented; a keeper encountering this species would be dealing with a scientific specimen, not a hobby fish.
Conservation
Oreonectes furcocaudalis is listed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, an assessment from 2007. This reflects both its extremely restricted range — a small number of subterranean localities around Rongshui, Du'an and Rong'an counties in Guangxi — and the general difficulty of surveying and monitoring populations that live entirely within cave systems. Species with this life history are inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of their specific water source (groundwater extraction, pollution entering the karst aquifer, or disruption to the cave system itself), even though no population trend data exists to confirm a decline. There is no evidence of this species entering the aquarium trade; whatever pressures it faces are tied to its native karst habitat rather than collection for the hobby.
