It belongs to Oreonectes, a genus of mostly troglomorphic (cave-adapted) stone loaches in the family Nemacheilidae, the largest of the loach families. Described by Lan in 2013, it is a genuinely obscure fish outside specialist circles — never established in the aquarium trade and data-sparse even in the scientific literature — and honesty about that scarcity matters more here than filling gaps with guesswork.

Taxonomy & naming

Oreonectes duanensis was described by Lan in 2013 from a cave stream in Duan County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China. It sits in the genus Oreonectes, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest and most species-rich family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Oreonectes is a taxonomically active genus: several of its members are cave-dwelling or cave-adapted, and some have since been moved into the related genus Troglonectes as researchers work through the group's relationships, so readers may encounter this fish under either name in different sources. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, and this article keeps the original genus, Oreonectes, as placed by its describer.

The genus name Oreonectes derives from Greek roots meaning roughly "mountain swimmer," while the species epithet duanensis marks its type locality in Duan County. Beyond the original description, published information on this species is limited, which is typical for narrow-range cave loaches described in the last two decades from southern China's karst regions.

Morphology

As with other loaches, the near-scaleless skin typical of Nemacheilidae warrants caution with copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, though this has not been tested specifically on this species.

Given the total lack of trade history, husbandry data, or hobbyist reports, this is a species to know about rather than a species to plan a tank around.
