Taxonomy & naming
Oreonectes luochengensis was described in 2011 by Yang, Wu, Wei and Yang in the journal Zoological Research, based on specimens collected in September 2008 from an underground river outlet in Tianhe Town, Luocheng County, Guangxi, China. The genus Oreonectes sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, by far the largest family within the true loaches (superfamily Cobitoidea) and one whose genera have been repeatedly reshuffled as the old catch-all Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart using both morphology and molecular data.
The species epithet luochengensis is a straightforward toponym, naming the type locality of Luocheng County. As with many recently described Oreonectes and related cave-dwelling nemacheilids from the karst regions of southern China, the taxonomy here is comparatively settled — this is not an old name inherited from a defunct genus — but the group as a whole continues to attract new species descriptions as China's karst cave systems are surveyed more thoroughly.
Morphology
This is a small loach: the type series gave a standard length range of 2.5–3 in, with a mean around 2.5 in, and the holotype measured 2.5 in SL. The body is elongated and cylindrical, in keeping with its Nemacheilidae relatives, with a dorsal fin of 3 unbranched and 7 branched rays, an anal fin of 2 unbranched and 5 branched rays, pectoral fins with 1 unbranched and 11–12 branched rays, and pelvic fins with 1 unbranched and 7 branched rays.
Living specimens are described as pink, fading to yellowish once preserved — a colour profile consistent with an animal that spends its life away from light. Notably, the species lacks the cephalic lateral-line system seen in many surface-dwelling relatives, and it carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales beneath the skin, giving it an effectively scaleless appearance. Like other nemacheilids, an erectile suborbital spine is expected to be present, though the cited descriptions do not dwell on it in detail; the near-scaleless skin typical of the family is confirmed and matters for handling and medication.
Habitat
Oreonectes luochengensis is known from a single type locality: the outlet of an underground river in Tianhe Town, Luocheng County, Guangxi, within the Hongshui River system (part of the larger Pearl River drainage). It is described as inhabiting the water of an underground karst cave — a subterranean, presumably cold and oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) environment, quite unlike the open, sunlit streams favoured by most stone loaches.
Broader reviews of Guangxi's cave-dwelling nemacheilid loaches place this species and its relatives within the karst cave systems of the Pearl River basin, with related populations reported across Guangxi, Guangdong, Hong Kong and even into northern Vietnam's Quang Ninh Province. No aquarium-relevant temperature or pH data has been published for this species specifically; given its subterranean, cold, karst-water habitat, it should not be assumed to tolerate the warm, still conditions suited to lowland tropical fish, and specific numbers are best treated as unknown rather than guessed.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for Oreonectes luochengensis. Based on the feeding ecology documented across Oreonectes and other Nemacheilidae, it is presumed to be a benthic micro-predator, foraging over the substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans — the standard diet for this family of stream- and cave-dwelling loaches. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.8 ± 0.3 for the species, consistent with a low-level invertebrate predator rather than an omnivore or herbivore.
In the near-total absence of a documented aquarium diet, keepers should default to small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and similar invertebrate fare — mirroring what related bottom-foraging nemacheilids take in captivity, while treating any specific claims about this species' feeding preferences as unverified.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for this species. Data on reproduction in cave-dwelling Oreonectes generally is extremely thin, and nothing in the primary description or subsequent literature addresses sexual dimorphism, breeding season, or mate selection for O. luochengensis specifically. This is a genuinely data-sparse area, and it would be irresponsible to invent detail where none has been published.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), Oreonectes luochengensis is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium, and no breeding account exists in the literature reviewed here. The expected mode, based on its family, is egg-scattering over gravel or rock crevices in flowing water with no parental care — the typical nemacheilid pattern — but this has not been directly observed or documented for this species. Its subterranean, cave-restricted habitat and status as a recent, narrowly known description make captive breeding reports especially unlikely to exist at present.
In the aquarium
Oreonectes luochengensis has essentially no established aquarium-keeping record; it is not a fish encountered in the ordinary trade, and any specimens in hobbyist hands would be exceptional. What can be said with confidence follows from its Nemacheilidae relatives and its own described biology: it is a small loach (well under 3 in), it appears to be near-scaleless, and — as with scaleless loaches generally — it should be treated as sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, warranting caution and reduced dosing if disease treatment is ever needed.
Given its origin in cold, subterranean karst water, a keeper who somehow acquired this species should not assume it wants warm, still, tropical conditions; it should instead be given cool, clean, well-oxygenated, gently flowing water and shelter from bright light, mirroring its cave habitat as closely as possible. Because so little is documented, any care regimen for this species is necessarily an extrapolation from its family and habitat rather than a verified protocol.
Conservation
Oreonectes luochengensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category applies; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species known only from a single subterranean locality in Guangxi's karst landscape, it fits the broader pattern seen across China's cave-dwelling nemacheilid loaches: narrow-range endemics whose entire population may depend on the water quality and hydrology of one cave system, making them inherently vulnerable to groundwater pollution, quarrying, and other disturbance of karst aquifers even in the absence of a formal assessment.
There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species, and the risks it faces — to the extent they can be inferred — are tied to habitat disturbance in its native karst region rather than collection pressure.
