Taxonomy & naming
Oreonectes microphthalmus was formally described in 2008 by Du, Chen and Yang, one of a wave of new Oreonectes species named from China's karst cave systems in the 2000s and 2010s as ichthyologists surveyed the region's underground waters more systematically. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the true loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one still being actively revised as older, broad genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus are split apart along regional and morphological lines.
The genus Oreonectes itself — the name comes from the Greek oros, "mountain," and nectes, "swimmer" — is a modest one of cave- and spring-associated loaches from the limestone country of southern China and northern Vietnam. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference for the currently valid combination, and no subsequent revision has moved this species out of Oreonectes, so it is treated here under its original genus.
Morphology
This is a small loach, reaching only about 2 in in standard length, with the elongated, faintly compressed body typical of Nemacheilidae. Its most striking feature is its eyes: in keeping with the species name, they are highly reduced, showing as little more than small patches of dark pigment beneath the skin rather than functional, image-forming eyes — a classic hallmark of a fish that has adapted to a life spent largely or entirely without light.
Like other stone loaches it is scaleless, or effectively so, leaving the skin exposed and, as in its relatives, sensitive to handling and medication. Coloration in cave-adapted Oreonectes tends toward pale pink or flesh tones with reduced or absent pigment pattern, consistent with reduced reliance on vision for camouflage or signalling, though detailed live-colour descriptions for this particular species are not well documented in the available literature.
Habitat
Oreonectes microphthalmus is known from cave streams around Du'an County in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China, a landscape of dramatic limestone karst riddled with underground rivers and cave systems. Species in this genus are typically obligate cave-dwellers (troglobites) or at least strongly cave-associated, living in the cool, clean, well-oxygenated freshwater that flows through these subterranean limestone passages, often in near-total darkness.
Detailed water-chemistry measurements specific to this species have not been published, but karst cave streams of this kind are consistently cool, clear and mineral-rich, buffered by the surrounding limestone toward a neutral-to-alkaline pH. This is not a warm, still, blackwater environment: it is flowing, oxygen-rich water typical of the small, spring-fed streams that riddle the region's underground drainage.
Feeding
As with most Nemacheilidae, Oreonectes microphthalmus is inferred to be a bottom-foraging micro-predator, taking small invertebrates and detritus from the substrate of its cave streams. Cave environments generally offer little in the way of primary production, so cave-adapted loaches like this one likely rely on whatever organic material and small invertebrate life washes in or persists in these dark, nutrient-poor systems, supplemented by detritus.
No specific dietary study of this species has been published, so this picture is drawn from its close Nemacheilidae relatives rather than direct observation. In the rare event a specimen were kept, a diet of small sinking live or frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp — alongside sinking prepared foods would suit its presumed micro-predatory, bottom-feeding habits.
Mating
Nothing specific has been published on courtship or sexual dimorphism in Oreonectes microphthalmus. Stone and brook loaches in general show little obvious external difference between the sexes outside the breeding season, beyond females typically appearing somewhat deeper-bodied when gravid with eggs.
For a poorly known cave endemic like this one, even that generic picture is an inference from better-studied Nemacheilidae rather than a direct observation of this species. Data on its reproductive behaviour and any seasonal cues are simply not available.
Breeding
No breeding has been documented for Oreonectes microphthalmus in the aquarium, and the species is essentially unknown in captivity. Based on the general pattern for Nemacheilidae, stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers: ripe fish release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward.
Given the species' cave habitat and restricted range, this is best treated as an inference from its family rather than a documented fact for this fish specifically — data for O. microphthalmus itself is sparse to nonexistent, and the honest position is that its captive reproduction has, as far as published sources show, never been attempted or recorded.
In the aquarium
Oreonectes microphthalmus is not a fish of the ordinary aquarium trade; it is a narrow-range cave endemic with no established history in the hobby, and keepers should not expect to encounter it for sale. Were it ever kept, its cave origins point clearly toward cool, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than a warm, still community tank, along with subdued or absent lighting given its degenerate eyes and presumed preference for darkness.
As with other scaleless loaches, any specimen would likely be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, calling for the same careful, half-dose approach used with its better-known relatives. In the complete absence of established husbandry data, however, any care recommendation beyond matching its natural cool, flowing, cave-stream conditions would be speculation rather than fact.
Conservation
Oreonectes microphthalmus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status — a category of its own given how many narrow-range karst cave endemics in southern China remain unassessed simply for lack of survey data. It is known only from cave systems around Du'an County, Guangxi, a restricted range that would typically raise conservation concern for a stream-dependent species even without a formal listing.
Karst cave ecosystems across southern China face pressure from groundwater extraction, pollution running off the surrounding limestone catchment, and habitat disturbance from cave tourism and quarrying, all of which can affect subterranean stream fish disproportionately given their narrow ranges and specialised habitat needs. There is no evidence this species is targeted by the aquarium trade; its main exposure is to the general pressures facing China's karst freshwater systems rather than collection.
