Taxonomy & naming
Oreonectes polystigmus was described by Du, Chen & Yang in 2008 as part of a revision of the genus Oreonectes Günther, which added two new species to the platycephalus group — loaches distinguished by a rounded or truncate caudal fin rather than the forked tail typical of most nemacheilids. The description was published in Zootaxa 1729: 23–36, with the type locality in Guangxi, China. Related literature from the same period also placed newly described karst Oreonectes in the older family name Balitoridae, a classification that has since been superseded; Oreonectes is now placed in Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.
The species epithet polystigmus comes from Greek and means "many-spotted," referring to the numerous, differently shaped spots scattered over the body — the character that most readily distinguishes it from its closest relative, O. platycephalus, from the same karst region. The genus Oreonectes itself has been repeatedly revised as researchers describe new karst- and cave-associated species from southern China, and the group's taxonomy should be treated as provisional rather than settled.
Morphology
The holotype measured 2.5 in standard length, putting this species firmly among the small stone loaches. The body carries an incomplete lateral line of only 6–8 pores, and an elaborate cephalic lateral-line system with 7 supraorbital and 4 plus 7 infraorbital pores — a sensory array typical of loaches that feel their way over stone and gravel in flowing, sometimes lightless, water. The body pattern is the species' calling card: many irregularly shaped spots cover the flanks, distinguishing it from the more uniformly patterned O. platycephalus.
As a stone loach it shares the family's general body plan — an elongate, subcylindrical body, a flattened head and belly suited to hugging the substrate, and small or reduced scales. Like other Nemacheilidae it lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the true "spined loaches" of Botiidae and Cobitidae; its near-scaleless skin, however, is shared across the loach superfamily and carries the same medication sensitivity seen in its spined relatives.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the karst landscape of Guangxi, in southwestern China, where limestone geology riddles the region with caves, sinkholes and spring-fed streams. It has been recorded from both surface streams and cave environments within this karst system — a habitat pattern shared by a number of Guangxi's Oreonectes, some of which have evolved reduced eyes and pigment as cave specialists. Whether O. polystigmus itself uses cave habitat as more than an extension of its surface stream range is not well documented in the available literature.
The streams of this region are clear, cool-to-cool-warm and fast-flowing, running over rock, gravel and pebble substrates typical of stone-loach habitat across Eurasia. This is a lotic, well-oxygenated environment, not the slow blackwater favored by many other aquarium fish — a point worth stressing given how often loaches from this family are mismatched with warm, still tank water.
Feeding
Nemacheilidae as a family are overwhelmingly benthic micro-predators, picking small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae and crustaceans from among stream-bed gravel and stones, and O. polystigmus can be expected to follow this pattern closely given its close relatives and habitat. No species-specific dietary study appears in the available literature, so this account follows the well-documented feeding ecology of the genus and family rather than direct observation of this species.
In practice this means a diet built around small live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, daphnia, small brine shrimp — supplemented with sinking pellets formulated for bottom-feeders; flake aimed at mid-water fish is likely to be ignored by a fish built to forage nose-down on the substrate.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for this species in the sources available. What is known is limited to a single anatomical clue: the holotype description notes that males carry a genital papilla posterior to the anus, a sexually dimorphic feature used to distinguish the sexes in this genus, as in many small nemacheilids where external color and shape differences are otherwise minimal or unreported.
Beyond that anatomical marker, data on this species' reproductive behavior is sparse, and nothing should be assumed beyond what is typical of the stone and brook loaches as a group — egg-scattering over gravel in flowing water, without pair formation or extended courtship, and without the migratory spawning runs seen in some larger loach families.
Breeding
Nemacheilidae as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward — a pattern wholly distinct from the cave-guarding male behavior of some gobies or the mouthbrooding seen in various cichlids, neither of which applies to any loach. O. polystigmus has not been reported bred in captivity, and stone loaches from this genus and region are rarely if ever kept or spawned in the hobby.
Given the complete absence of aquarium-breeding reports for this species, the honest summary is that it is essentially unknown outside its native karst streams: an egg-scatterer by family pattern, with no parental care, and no documented captive spawning to draw on.
In the aquarium
Oreonectes polystigmus is not established in the aquarium trade and is not a species a hobbyist is likely to encounter; this account is offered for completeness rather than as a care guide drawn from firsthand keeping experience. Were it to be kept, its close relatives and family-wide biology point clearly toward the setup it would need: cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or rock substrate, strong filtration to maintain both flow and oxygen, and a diet of small sinking live, frozen or pelleted foods rather than flake.
As with other nemacheilids and loaches generally, its skin is thin and near-scaleless, so any future keeper should treat it with the same caution long applied to other loaches — half-strength medications, no copper-based treatments, and vigilance for ich, to which scaleless loaches are notably prone. Given how little is documented about this species' social behavior, a cautious keeper would default to housing it in a small group rather than alone, following the general loach pattern, though this recommendation is inferred rather than confirmed for this exact species.
Conservation
Oreonectes polystigmus has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. Small-range karst endemics of this kind are frequently overlooked by formal assessment, and many narrow-range Nemacheilidae from similar habitats carry Data Deficient or threatened status once examined, so Not Evaluated should not be read as evidence of security.
Its entire known range lies within a limited karst system in Guangxi, China — a landscape of surface streams and caves that is vulnerable to the pressures common across the karst regions of southern China, including water abstraction, pollution and habitat alteration. As with many single-region cave-and-stream endemics, the absence of population data is itself a conservation concern, and further assessment would be needed to establish the species' true status.
