Taxonomy & naming
Oreonectes retrodorsalis was described by Lan, Yang & Chen in 1995, placed in the genus Oreonectes, a small group of nemacheilid loaches restricted to the karst underground-river systems of Guangxi and Guizhou in southwest China and adjoining northern Vietnam. FishBase lists the species under this original combination (FishBase ID 60483), and it is kept as Oreonectes here.
Subsequent taxonomic work has reassigned the species to Troglonectes, a genus erected for the cave-associated members of this group and now comprising nineteen species endemic to the cave systems of Guangxi and Guizhou. Troglonectes is characterised by a forked caudal fin, a developed adipose crest along the caudal peduncle, and a dorsal fin origin set above the pelvic fins. As with other Cobitoidea splits, hobbyist and older literature may still refer to the fish as Oreonectes retrodorsalis, and both names point to the same animal; this profile follows the original Oreonectes combination pending broader adoption of the newer name.
Morphology
Data on this specific species is sparse, but its genus is well characterised. Oreonectes and its close relatives are small, elongate nemacheilid loaches with a slightly compressed body, a markedly depressed head, and a dorsal fin set far back on the body — the feature the species name retrodorsalis ("rear-dorsal") describes. Scales are present, unlike the fully scaleless skin of some other loach lineages. Congeners in the surrounding karst fauna range from roughly 1.5–2.5 in standard length, and O. retrodorsalis is noted as smaller than other Oreonectes species, so an adult is likely to fall toward the small end of that range or below it.
Unlike some of its more deeply cave-committed relatives, which develop reduced or degenerated eyes as a troglomorphic adaptation to permanent darkness, O. retrodorsalis retains normal, functional eyes — consistent with a fish that uses surface pools and cave outlets rather than living its whole life in the lightless interior of a cave system.
Habitat
The species is known from the type locality of Long-li Village, Liuzhai Township, Nandan County, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China, at a point where the Hongshui River system emerges from an underground course. It belongs to a genus restricted to the karst limestone country of the Xijiang and Pearl River drainages spanning Guangxi, Guangdong and Hong Kong, with related populations reaching into the Kalong River of northern Vietnam — habitat built from small surface pools that fill in the rainy season, connected to underground karst caves and the outlets where subterranean rivers reach daylight.
No temperature, pH or water-chemistry data has been recorded for this species specifically. Its relatives in the wider stone-and-brook-loach family, Nemacheilidae, generally favour cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow, and a fish living in and around karst cave outlets is likely to experience cooler, more stable water than an open surface stream — but this is an inference from the genus and family, not a measurement of O. retrodorsalis itself.
Feeding
No diet data has been published for Oreonectes retrodorsalis specifically. As a small benthic nemacheilid loach from clear, oxygen-rich karst waters, it almost certainly forages as a micro-predator, picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other invertebrate prey from the substrate and rock surfaces around cave outlets and surface pools, in keeping with the feeding habits of stone and brook loaches generally. This should be treated as a reasonable inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour in this species. No external dimorphism has been described, and the species is far too poorly studied — and too obscure in the trade — for any pairing or breeding behaviour to have been documented in captivity or in the field.
Breeding
There is no record of Oreonectes retrodorsalis having been bred in the aquarium, and no description of its spawning behaviour in the wild. Stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and stones in flowing water with no parental care, and are rarely bred even in captivity; there is no reason to expect this cave-associated, karst-endemic species to differ, but the specific behaviour has simply never been documented. This profile records that gap honestly rather than inventing detail.
In the aquarium
Oreonectes retrodorsalis has no established aquarium history and is not a fish generally available in the hobby; there is no documented care regime, and none should be assumed. What can be reasoned from its genus and family is that any attempt to keep a small karst-endemic nemacheilid loach would call for cool, very clean, well-oxygenated water with steady flow, a stable and mature setup rather than a freshly cycled tank, and — as with other scaleless-skinned loaches — caution with medications, since many nemacheilids are sensitive to copper and full-strength treatments. Given how little is known and how restricted its native range is, this is a species to admire in the scientific literature rather than one to plan a tank around.
Conservation
Oreonectes retrodorsalis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here; it is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. It is known only from a single underground river outlet in karst Guangxi, and species restricted to isolated cave and karst systems in this part of China are characteristically narrow-range endemics vulnerable to any disruption of their local hydrology — quarrying, groundwater extraction or pollution of the karst aquifer are the kinds of pressures that would matter most for a fish with this distribution, though no specific threat assessment exists for this species.
