Taxonomy & naming
Pangio bhujia was described in 2019 by V.K. Anoop, Ralf Britz, C.P. Arjun, Neelesh Dahanukar and Rajeev Raghavan. The species appears to have been described directly in the genus Pangio rather than being transferred from an older combination, so there is no synonym to record. The species epithet 'bhujia' refers to the type locality, presumably a stream or locality name in the Western Ghats drainage from which the type series was collected.
The genus Pangio (family Cobitidae) takes in the kuhli loaches — the slender, eel-shaped, small-to-medium Cobitidae of South and Southeast Asia. Pangio has undergone repeated revision; the genus once subsumed fish placed in Acanthophthalmus and, earlier still, Cobitis. The Catalog of Fishes now recognises Pangio as the valid genus for this group. The family Cobitidae belongs to the superfamily Cobitoidea, a diverse and taxonomically active assemblage that also includes Botiidae, Nemacheilidae and several other loach lineages.
Morphology
As a member of Pangio, P. bhujia is expected to be a small, eel-like fish: an elongated, cylindrical body tapering to a narrow tail, a rounded snout, and small eyes set somewhat high on the head. The skin is effectively scaleless — the scales are minute and deeply embedded, giving the fish a smooth, naked feel — and carries a characteristic loach sensory pattern of fine papillae around the mouth. Adult size is not well documented for this species, but its congeners in Pangio are generally compact fish; a total length in the range of 1–2 in is consistent with the genus, though precise published measurements for P. bhujia itself are sparse.
Like other cobitids, P. bhujia carries a bifid (Y-shaped) erectile suborbital spine in a groove beneath each eye — a diagnostic character of the family and a structure that serves both in defence and in navigation of tight substrate crevices. The coloration of Pangio species runs from plain brown or pinkish-tan to banded or striped patterns; published colour descriptions for P. bhujia are not available from the sources consulted.
Habitat
Pangio bhujia is native to the Western Ghats of India — a globally significant biodiversity hotspot running along the southwestern coast of the Indian subcontinent. The streams of this region are typically clear and fast-flowing over rocky or sandy beds shaded by dense riparian forest, with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water low in dissolved minerals and rich in leaf litter and submerged wood. This is the kind of habitat that Pangio species across their range consistently occupy: shallow, sheltered, heavily shaded stream margins where fine sediment and organic detritus accumulate, providing both substrate to burrow into and the invertebrate food that fuels a nocturnal micro-predator.
The species is presumed to be a narrow endemic to one or a small number of Western Ghats stream systems, as is common for the loach fauna of this region. Specific collection data beyond the type locality are not available from current sources.
Feeding
Pangio bhujia is a micro-omnivore and sand-sifter. Like its Pangio relatives it forages nocturnally, working the substrate for small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic prey — while also taking fine detritus and any organic matter in the sediment. In the aquarium, congeners accept sinking micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, frozen daphnia and similar small sinking foods; there is no reason to expect P. bhujia to differ.
A significant practical point is that kuhli loaches are chronic victims of underfeeding: because they hide during the day and feed after dark, they are easily overlooked at feeding time in a community tank populated with daytime surface and mid-water feeders. For any Pangio species, feeding sinking food after lights-out — when the loaches are active and the competition is at rest — is essential to ensure the fish are actually eating.
Mating
Specific data on the reproductive biology and sexual dimorphism of Pangio bhujia have not been published. In congeners, males and females are externally very similar; mature females may appear fuller-bodied when ripe with eggs, but reliable sexing is generally difficult in Pangio without close examination. The species presumably follows the broader Pangio pattern in which mating is tied to rainy-season water conditions — rising water, increasing flow, cooling temperatures — that trigger reproductive behaviour.
Given the sparse data on this recently described species, any detailed account of its mating behaviour in nature would be speculative. What can be said with confidence is that kuhli loaches as a group are rarely observed spawning either in nature or in captivity, and no specific mating data for P. bhujia are available.
Breeding
Pangio bhujia has not been bred in home aquaria to any documented extent; the species is barely known in the trade and the literature is silent on captive reproduction. Kuhli loaches as a group very rarely spawn in aquaria: when spawning does occur, the fish scatter small, greenish, adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants or fine-leaved vegetation at the surface, with no parental care of any kind — eggs and fry are left entirely to their own fate. There is no cave-guarding, no mouthbrooding, no bubble-nest; this is a straightforward egg-scattering species, as are all Cobitidae.
The practical picture for any aquarist keeping P. bhujia is that breeding should not be expected. The few verified Pangio spawnings in home aquaria have been accidental rather than managed, and the conditions that seem to trigger them — a mature, heavily planted, soft-water tank with excellent water quality, possibly combined with a seasonal cool-water change — are not reliably reproducible. The species is wild-collected.
In the aquarium
Pangio bhujia is not an established aquarium species; it is a recently described endemic that is unlikely to appear in the hobby trade in any volume. If kept, the requirements of its genus apply directly: fine, soft sand is non-negotiable. The scaleless skin is vulnerable to abrasion, and sharp gravel or coarse substrate will damage it over time. Dense cover — bundles of leaf litter, driftwood tangles, sections of PVC pipe, or thick vegetation — is equally important; without places to hide and feel secure, kuhli loaches remain chronically stressed.
The near-scaleless skin also means that P. bhujia, like all Pangio, is sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of many common medications. In a community tank it will often be among the first fish to display ich, and it must be treated carefully — half-doses, medication-free intervals, and copper-free formulations are the safer approach. Warm (approximately 75–82 °F), soft, slightly acidic water with low nitrates and gentle to moderate flow will suit it well. Feed sinking foods after lights-out. Given the extremely limited information on this species, it should be treated with the same careful husbandry applied to the most sensitive members of its genus.
Conservation
Pangio bhujia has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — it was described only in 2019 and, as a narrow-range Western Ghats endemic, it falls into the large category of small stream fishes that are discovered faster than they can be formally evaluated. The species is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE).
The Western Ghats are a biodiversity hotspot under significant pressure: deforestation, plantation expansion (particularly tea, coffee and rubber), water extraction, siltation from land conversion, and small-scale sand-mining all degrade the clear, low-turbidity streams that loaches of this region depend on. Species with small ranges — and most newly described Western Ghats fish fall into this category — are inherently vulnerable to localised habitat loss. The aquarium trade is not a documented pressure for P. bhujia at present, given its extreme rarity in commerce, but the broader pattern of endemic Western Ghats loaches being wild-collected without population data is a concern. If the species enters trade in volume, collection pressure on what is likely a small population would warrant monitoring.
