Taxonomy & naming
Pangio alternans was described by Maurice Kottelat and Kelvin Lim in 1993. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true loaches, and to the genus Pangio — the kuhli loaches — a group of slender, eel-bodied Southeast Asian stream fishes. Earlier specimens in European collections had been assigned to the broad catch-all genus Acanthophthalmus, the name that appeared in older aquarium literature for all kuhli-type loaches. Kottelat's 1987 revision recognised Pangio as the correct genus for this group, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) now lists the species as Pangio alternans Kottelat & Lim, 1993 — the authority cited here.
The species epithet alternans is Latin for 'alternating', a direct reference to the alternating arrangement of its markings: triangular saddles along the dorsal midline alternate with irregularly shaped spots on the middle and lower body, creating a broken, staggered pattern quite unlike the more continuous banding of P. kuhlii. The Aquarium Glaser description notes that P. alternans further differs from P. kuhlii in lacking a white belly and in having no massive dark spot at the caudal fin base — P. kuhlii always carries that spot; P. alternans has only a diffuse vertical strip in its place. Colour in this species is noted to be extremely variable in the trade, and it is frequently mixed with or misidentified as other Pangio species, making confirmed identification a challenge even for experienced keepers.
Morphology
Pangio alternans is a small, slender loach with an elongate, laterally compressed body tapering to a fine-pointed head and a small, inferior mouth equipped with three pairs of barbels for probing the substrate. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in; hobby sources suggest adults may reach 2.5–3 in in total length, though trade specimens are usually at the smaller end of that range. The body is effectively scaleless to the touch — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded in soft skin, which gives the fish its characteristic smooth feel and is a critical point for medication sensitivity.
The diagnostic pattern consists of 6–9 irregular, triangular or pyramid-shaped saddles along the dorsal midline, each alternating with an irregularly shaped blotch on the middle and lower body. There is no white belly: the pale blotches extend toward the ventral surface, and there is no single bold spot at the caudal fin base — the character that most reliably separates it from Pangio kuhlii. Like other cobitid loaches, P. alternans possesses a sharp erectile suborbital spine housed in a groove beneath the eye; this spine is a defensive structure that can snag a net and cause a minor wound if handled carelessly.
Habitat
Pangio alternans is native to the middle Mahakam River drainage in eastern Borneo, Indonesia. It inhabits small, fast-flowing tributary streams under closed forest canopy — blackwater environments where the water is deeply stained with tannins from decaying leaf litter, the substrate is fine sand and leaf accumulation, and overhanging vegetation keeps light levels low. The water in these habitats is soft, slightly acidic (pH 6.2–6.8 per hobby records), warm (around 77–82 °F) and clean, with dissolved oxygen maintained by the current.
This is an old-growth forest specialist. It does not occur in degraded, open or disturbed streams, and it is tightly linked to the intact canopy that drives the tannin chemistry and shading that characterise its habitat. The IUCN assesses the species as Endangered specifically because its narrow range in the Mahakam basin is subject to ongoing deforestation, and because the swift blackwater stream habitat it requires is not replicated in secondary or cleared landscapes.
Feeding
Pangio alternans is a micro-omnivore and nocturnal bottom-forager. In the wild it works through leaf litter and fine substrate in search of small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny worms, microcrustaceans and similar organisms — after dark. Its trophic level (around 3.2 on FishBase) places it firmly in the small-carnivore to omnivore range, consistent with the diet of its kuhli relatives.
In the aquarium it will accept sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and Mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp. Quality flake that sinks or settles can supplement the diet. Because this is a nocturnal burrower that becomes active only after the lights go out, it is one of the easiest fish in a community tank to underfeed — it competes poorly with diurnal feeders for food that falls in their presence. Offering sinking food at lights-out is the reliable solution: drop a pellet or two specifically after the tank darkens, when this loach emerges to forage.
Mating
Sexing Pangio alternans is difficult. In common with other kuhli loaches, ripe females are said to be noticeably broader in the belly when gravid — the eggs can sometimes be seen through the body wall in very small, pale species — but the two sexes are otherwise superficially alike. There is no reliable external dimorphism in colouration, fin shape or body proportions that allows consistent sexing under normal aquarium conditions.
Little is known about the courtship behaviour of P. alternans specifically. Kuhli loaches in general are believed to use nocturnal activity near the surface or among floating vegetation as part of spawning behaviour, but direct observation of P. alternans mating has not been documented in the literature, and the rarity of the species in the hobby means there are very few keepers with enough experience of it to report detailed observations.
Breeding
Pangio alternans has not been reliably bred in the home aquarium. Hobby sources note that anecdotal evidence hints at possible success in heavily planted, well-filtered tanks, but confirmed spawning accounts are essentially absent from the literature. The kuhli loach group in general spawns very rarely in captivity — they are reported to scatter small, greenish, adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants, with no parental care from either sex, and the fry are tiny and difficult to raise. This is the expected breeding mode for P. alternans as well, by analogy with its close relatives.
The trade in this species is largely or entirely dependent on wild-collected fish from Borneo. There is no known commercial farm production of P. alternans, and the species is described as rare in the ornamental trade — maintained mainly by specialist keepers rather than sold widely in the hobby. Its Endangered status adds weight to the argument for treating any wild-caught specimens carefully and as a long-term commitment rather than a disposable novelty.
In the aquarium
Pangio alternans is a specialist fish suited to a careful, experienced keeper rather than a casual community tank. Its requirements follow the kuhli pattern: a soft, fine sand substrate is mandatory — this is a burrowing loach that dives headfirst into the substrate as a refuge, and sharp gravel or coarse sand will abrade its scaleless skin and damage its barbels. The tank should be well-established (kuhlis and their relatives are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite and do poorly in new or unstable systems), heavily planted or decorated with leaf litter, driftwood and caves to give the fish the low-light cover it needs, and tightly lidded — this species, like all kuhlis, is an accomplished escape artist.
Keep it in a small group rather than singly; like other Pangio it is a social fish and is less stressed and more visible when kept with conspecifics or close relatives. A group of three or more is the minimum; six or more is better. The tank should reproduce the blackwater conditions of its native streams: slightly acidic water (pH 6.2–6.8), soft to medium-soft hardness, temperature 77–82 °F, gentle to moderate flow, and dim or partially shaded lighting.
The near-scaleless skin that makes this fish so tactilely smooth is a genuine medical vulnerability. Like all cobitid loaches, P. alternans absorbs medications through the skin far more readily than a scaled fish does, making it disproportionately sensitive to copper-based treatments and to standard medication doses. It is also notably prone to ich. The practical rule is to treat the whole tank at half the normal dose, to avoid copper entirely if possible, and to remove carbon from the filter during any course of medication. Feed sinking food at lights-out specifically to ensure this nocturnal forager gets its share; it will not compete effectively with day-active community fish at a normal feeding time.
Conservation
Pangio alternans is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 6 December 2019. The EN designation reflects the species' narrow endemic range within the Mahakam River drainage of eastern Borneo and the ongoing degradation and loss of the blackwater forest-stream habitat it requires. Eastern Borneo (Kalimantan Timur) has experienced some of the most rapid deforestation in Southeast Asia, driven by palm oil and timber concessions, and the small, clear tributary streams under closed-canopy forest that this loach depends on are not resilient to that change.
The species is rare in the aquarium trade and there is no known captive breeding or farm production to supply the hobby — what fish reach shops are wild-caught. Given the Endangered status and the difficulty of maintaining this species long-term in captivity, buyers should treat any available specimen as a genuine conservation responsibility, keep it as part of a considered specialist collection, and avoid returning unwanted individuals to the trade cycle. The best outcome for wild populations is the preservation of primary forest in the Mahakam catchment.
