Taxonomy & naming
Pangio pathala was formally described in 2022 by Arjun, Sidharthan, Dahanukar and Raghavan from specimens collected in the Arjun stream, Idukki district, Kerala, India. The description was part of a broader revision that recognised several new Pangio species from the Western Ghats — a hill range whose small, isolated stream systems have proved to harbour a surprising diversity of small cobitid loaches that were previously lumped under the widespread Southeast Asian species Pangio kuhlii or P. shelfordii.
The genus Pangio sits within the family Cobitidae, the true loaches, and is one of the most eel-like genera in the group. Its members share a slender, sinuous body, deeply embedded or vestigial scales that leave the skin feeling smooth or naked, and a burrowing lifestyle. The genus centre of diversity is Sundaland — the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo — but the 2022 revision confirmed that the Western Ghats harbour their own radiation of Pangio species that are not closely related to the Southeast Asian trade fish.
The specific epithet pathala derives from Pathala, a place name in the type locality area of Kerala, not from a person's name. The combination Pangio pathala is the currently valid name as listed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer), which is the authority for valid names used on this site.
Morphology
Pangio pathala is a very small loach, reaching around 1.5–2 in in standard length. The body is eel-like and greatly elongated, tapering gently toward the tail, with a small, subterminal mouth equipped with sensory barbels suited to probing the substrate. The eyes are small and somewhat buried, consistent with the nocturnal, burrowing habits of the genus.
The body is effectively scaleless, or at most covered in scales so tiny and deeply embedded as to leave the skin smooth to the touch — a defining trait of the genus and one with direct implications for care, since the lack of a robust scale armour makes these fish significantly more sensitive to copper-based medications and other dissolved treatments than a fully scaled fish would be. Like other cobitids, it possesses a bifid suborbital spine — a small, sharp, erectile spine beneath the eye that is used defensively; it can flick erect when the fish is handled or netted, snagging mesh and capable of catching a finger.
Colour pattern details for this recently described species remain somewhat data-sparse in the available literature, but Pangio species of this type typically display a warm brown to yellowish-brown ground colour with darker blotches or a more or less uniform pattern, and pale underparts.
Habitat
The type locality of Pangio pathala is the Arjun stream in Idukki district, Kerala, in the southern Western Ghats of India. This is a steep, forested hill stream flowing over sand and gravel, shaded by intact forest canopy, and characterised by cool water, very low mineral content (soft), and low pH driven by organic acids leaching from leaf litter and forest soils. Water temperatures at these elevations and latitudes typically range from around 64–75 °F, cooler than the tropical Sundaland streams associated with most other Pangio species. pH sits in the range of roughly 5.5–6.8.
The stream bed carries a mixture of fine sand, gravel, submerged leaf packs, roots and woody debris — the exact structural mosaic that kuhli loaches use for cover and foraging. Flow is moderate to brisk in the monsoon season. This is a highly endemic system: many of the fish, amphibians and invertebrates recorded from Western Ghats hill streams occur nowhere else on Earth, which makes habitat integrity critical for the persistence of all these species.
Pangio pathala is not a Sundaland lowland fish and should not be confused with the more familiar trade kuhlis (P. kuhlii, P. semicincta) that come from warmer, slower, more acidic lowland rivers in Malaysia and Indonesia. Its Western Ghats origin places it in a distinct climatic and ecological context.
Feeding
Pangio pathala is a micro-omnivore and sand-sifter in the mould of its genus: it forages nocturnally over the substrate, working its barbelled mouth through fine sand and leaf litter to locate small invertebrates — worm larvae, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and similar prey — as well as organic detritus and algal films.
In the aquarium the principal failure mode is underfeeding. Kuhli loaches are inactive and hidden by day; they emerge to feed only after the lights go out, by which time any food left in an active community tank has long since been consumed by other inhabitants. The practical solution is to drop sinking foods — small sinking pellets, carnivore wafers, frozen or live bloodworm, Tubifex or Daphnia — into the tank at lights-out, when the loaches will be active enough to find and eat them. Fish that are fed only at community-tank feeding times, in light, are routinely underfed and slowly waste away despite appearing normal.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Pangio pathala is not documented from the available literature, which is unsurprising for a species described only in 2022 from a limited set of specimens. In the broader genus Pangio, mature females are generally plumper-bodied when in breeding condition, giving a slightly broader dorsal profile visible from above; males are more slender. These differences are subtle and require good condition and some familiarity with the species to read reliably.
The triggers for reproductive readiness in Western Ghats Pangio are not known from captive observation. By analogy with other kuhli-type loaches and with the seasonal hydrology of Western Ghats streams — where the summer monsoon brings significant increases in flow, a brief temperature drop and dilution of the water — it is likely that seasonal cues related to rainfall and water volume are involved in conditioning the fish to spawn.
Breeding
Pangio pathala has not been bred in the aquarium, and captive breeding of Western Ghats Pangio generally is undocumented. Kuhli loaches as a group are very rarely bred in home aquaria; the genus is understood to scatter small, adhesive, greenish eggs among the roots of floating or fine-leaved plants at the surface, or among vegetation in shallow water, with no parental care. Adults scatter and abandon the eggs; the larvae are tiny and require infusoria-level food on hatching.
The honest assessment is that captive breeding of Pangio pathala is essentially unachieved and should not be expected by an aquarist acquiring this fish. The trade in this species, to the extent one exists, draws on wild-collected specimens from Kerala. Providing the species with well-planted, biologically mature water with soft, acidic conditions may encourage reproductive behaviour in a well-maintained tank, but verified spawning accounts are absent from the literature available at the time of writing.
In the aquarium
Pangio pathala is suited to a small, quiet aquarium with a deep bed of very fine, soft sand — this is non-negotiable for any kuhli-type loach. These fish bury themselves completely in sand to rest and escape perceived threats; sharp gravel or coarse substrate damages the scaleless body and the sensitive barbels, and a fish denied burrowing substrate will remain chronically stressed. A bed of 2 in or more of fine silica sand, pool sand or similarly soft material is the single most important physical requirement.
Cover above the sand is equally important: driftwood, smooth stones, tangles of roots, clay tubes and beds of fine-leaved plants all provide the dark retreats that make kuhli loaches feel secure enough to emerge during daylight hours. Dim lighting, or floating plants to shade the tank, further helps. Water should be soft (low hardness) and acidic to very slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.8), clean, and well-filtered but without aggressive turbulence. Temperature should reflect the fish's Western Ghats origin: cooler than the Southeast Asian trade kuhlis, in the range 64–75 °F — this is not a warm-tropical fish.
Being scaleless, Pangio pathala — like all kuhli loaches — is acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to many standard aquarium treatments at normal dosing levels. When medication is required, use the lowest effective dose, choose copper-free formulations where possible, and remove carbon before treating. This species is also prone to showing early signs of ich, so water quality and temperature stability matter greatly. Keep a small group of at least three to five: while not as strongly social as the botiid loaches, kuhli loaches are more active and settled in the presence of conspecifics and tend to waste away in isolation.
Because this is a small, newly described endemic from a restricted range, wild-caught specimens may be delicate on arrival and should be given a period of quiet acclimatisation in a species or small community tank before being expected to thrive.
Conservation
Pangio pathala has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated, having been described only in 2022. The pre-crawl research returned a Data Deficient indicator in some sources, but as of the cache date no formal IUCN assessment has been published for this species.
The Western Ghats of Kerala represent one of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots, and the small hill streams that are the only known habitat of P. pathala are under pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water extraction. The Arjun stream type locality is in Idukki district, a region with significant plantation agriculture encroaching on forest margins. Stream endemics with highly restricted ranges are inherently vulnerable: a species confined to one or two stream systems has little buffer against local habitat degradation. Any trade in wild-caught specimens draws directly on what may be a very small wild population, and given the lack of captive breeding, the trade is wholly wild-sourced.
Conservation of this species depends on the protection of intact forest cover in the Western Ghats and the maintenance of water quality in its natal streams. As awareness of the region's fish diversity grows through taxonomic work like the 2022 revision, future IUCN assessments are anticipated.
