Parasewellia polylobata is a small hillstream loach endemic to Vietnam, described in 2005 from fast-flowing montane streams in the country's northern ranges. A member of the family Balitoridae, it belongs to the Sewellia lineage of torrent-adapted gobies-of-the-riverbed — flattened fish whose pectoral and pelvic fins form a broad adhesive disc for clinging to boulders in white-water currents. Like its kin it demands cool, highly oxygenated, fast-moving water and a mature biofilm surface to graze; remove either and it declines quickly. It has no widely used common name and remains a specialist fish rarely encountered in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Parasewellia polylobata was formally described by Nguyen Van Hao and Nguyen Thi Hoa in 2005, making it one of several hillstream loach species from Indochina that came to science only in the early twenty-first century as survey work intensified in the Annamite Cordillera and adjacent drainages of northern Vietnam. The genus Parasewellia was erected alongside or shortly before the species to accommodate loaches closely related to Sewellia — the fan-loaches of Laos and Vietnam — but distinct in certain fin and squamation characters. The epithet polylobata refers to a multi-lobed structural feature in its anatomy, consistent with the latin-derived naming convention used across hillstream genera.

The family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches) has been substantially revised since the 1990s; older classifications placed many of these fish in Homalopteridae or lumped them with the broader Cobitoidea. Current placement follows Kottelat's revisions, which recognise Balitoridae as the family containing the Sewellia-like torrent loaches of South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Parasewellia polylobata Nguyen & Nguyen, 2005.

Morphology

Parasewellia polylobata shares the hallmark body plan of the torrent-adapted hillstream loaches: the body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with broadly spread, horizontally angled pectoral and pelvic fins that together form a continuous adhesive surface — effectively a sucker — enabling the fish to hold station on bare rock in fast, turbulent currents without being swept away. The head is depressed and the mouth is positioned on the underside, adapted for rasping biofilm and aufwuchs directly from rock surfaces.

The species is small, consistent with the Sewellia alliance; precise maximum length data are sparse in the available literature, but related genera typically reach 1.5–2.5 in standard length. The body is patterned with dark spots or blotches on a paler ground, providing camouflage against the speckled-rock substrate of fast hill streams. As in other balitorids the scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin effectively smooth to the touch — a point that carries direct implications for disease sensitivity and medication.

Habitat

This species is endemic to Vietnam, recorded from fast-flowing hill streams in the northern part of the country. Its habitat is the torrent-zone microenvironment: boulders and cobbles swept by fast, shallow, highly oxygenated current, with little silt or organic detritus on the rock surfaces. The water is typically cool by the standards of tropical fish, clear, and saturated with dissolved oxygen — conditions found where upland streams tumble over hard substrate before reaching the lowland valleys.

The surrounding terrain is subtropical to montane forest. Stream temperatures in these upland drainages can dip considerably below the 79–82 °F of the lowland tropics, and water hardness is typically low to moderate over granite or sandstone bedrock. Parasewellia polylobata is a specialist of this narrow microhabitat and cannot be expected to thrive in warm, still, or silty water.

Feeding

Parasewellia polylobata is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer in the wild, rasping diatoms, algae, periphyton, and associated microinvertebrates directly from the surfaces of submerged rocks. This is not generalist algae-eating in the common aquarium sense — it is a highly specialised feeding mode dependent on a dense, mature community of attached organisms growing on hard substrate in fast, well-lit water. In a newly set-up tank or one with bare glass and gravel, there is simply nothing for the fish to eat.

In the aquarium it can be coaxed onto small frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp and micro worms, and blanched vegetables such as courgette or spinach placed on a rock. High-quality sinking wafers formulated for algae-eaters may be accepted. Despite this, starvation on an insufficient biofilm base is a leading cause of decline in captive hillstream loaches, and keepers should prioritise establishing a mature, algae-covered rockscape before acquiring the fish.

Mating

Almost nothing has been published about the mating behaviour of Parasewellia polylobata specifically. By analogy with the best-studied members of the Sewellia group, males of related species defend small territories on rock surfaces and display to females with fin-spreading and posturing. The sexes in hillstream loaches of this type are often distinguishable in mature individuals by body shape — females becoming noticeably broader and deeper-bodied when gravid — but reliable external characters may require close comparison.

As with most hillstream loaches, the seasonal cue for reproductive readiness is likely tied to temperature fluctuation and changes in water volume and flow associated with the wet and dry seasons of northern Vietnam. Recreating these shifts in a home aquarium — a drop in temperature, an increase in current, a change in photoperiod — is the most plausible approach to conditioning a pair, though documentation of successful captive spawning in Parasewellia is absent from the available literature.

Breeding

Parasewellia polylobata has not been bred in the aquarium hobby to any documented degree. It is an egg-scattering hillstream loach with no parental care: spawning in related genera typically involves the female depositing small clutches of eggs in crevices or among fine gravel in the current, where the eggs develop unattended, nourished by fast-flowing, oxygen-rich water. The analogous pattern in the well-documented Sewellia lineolata — the best-known member of the group — involves brief pursuit, the female pressing against rock while eggs are released, and no subsequent care by either parent.

For practical purposes, keepers should approach this fish as one they are unlikely to breed. The commercial trade, where it appears at all, is supplied by wild collection in Vietnam. Hobbyists who do achieve conditioning and spawning in a mature, cool, strongly flowing river tank are working in territory with essentially no published precedent for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Parasewellia polylobata is a genuine specialist and not a beginner's fish. The non-negotiable requirements are: cool water (consistent with upland Vietnamese hill streams, considerably below typical tropical temperatures), vigorous surface agitation and high dissolved oxygen, a mature aquarium with extensive rock surfaces carrying dense biofilm and algae, and absence of silty or warm, stagnant conditions. A powerhead or wavemaker delivering a strong directional current over a bank of smooth stones or slate is the baseline setup.

Because the skin is effectively scaleless, this fish is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive no more than half the standard dose of any treatment — yet hillstream loaches are prone to skin infections and parasites in suboptimal conditions, so maintaining pristine water quality is the primary preventive. The fish is peaceful and best kept with other cool-water hillstream species of similar size; it should not be housed with warm-water tropicals that require temperatures outside its tolerance. Tank size should suit the flow equipment needed rather than the fish's small body, since generating adequate current in too small a volume produces problems of its own. Data on group size requirements are sparse, but a small group of three to six individuals is a sensible starting point, consistent with the social structure reported for related Sewellia species.

Conservation

Parasewellia polylobata has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; it carries no formal conservation category and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is typical of the many small-ranged hillstream loaches described from Vietnamese and Lao drainages in recent decades — the pace of new descriptions has outrun the capacity of assessment programmes, and many species remain data-deficient or simply unevaluated.

The species is endemic to Vietnam and, based on its hillstream habitat requirements, is likely restricted to a limited number of stream catchments. Its torrent-specialist ecology makes it intrinsically vulnerable to any change that reduces flow, raises water temperature, or introduces silt — all of which accompany deforestation and upland agricultural expansion in the Annamite ranges. Where it enters the trade at all, fish are wild-collected, since captive breeding is essentially unknown. The combination of small range, specialised habitat, and absence of any conservation assessment makes it a species worth monitoring, even without a formal threat category.
