Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis is a small hillstream loach of the Red River system, native to the fast, clear hill streams of northern Vietnam and Yunnan Province in southern China. Described by Pellegrin and Chevey in 1935, it belongs to the family Balitoridae — the true hillstream loaches — and shares that family's hallmark flattened body, paired fin disc and relentless adherence to rock in powerful current. It is a specialist of cold, swift, oxygen-saturated water and dies in the warm, still tanks it is so often placed in. Data on this species are sparse: the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, captive breeding has not been recorded, and it regularly arrives in the trade already malnourished from mishandling.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis was formally described by the French ichthyologists Jacques Pellegrin and Pierre Chevey in 1935, based on material from Tonkin — the historical French colonial name for northern Vietnam — which gives the species its epithet. The genus Sinogastromyzon, erected by Fang in 1930, belongs to the family Balitoridae and contains roughly a dozen species of flattened hillstream loaches distributed across southern China, Vietnam and the wider Indochina region. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) lists S. tonkinensis as a valid species within this genus.

Balitoridae have undergone substantial taxonomic revision in recent decades as molecular work has disentangled the old catch-all classification of 'hillstream loaches.' Sinogastromyzon sits within the subfamily Gastromyzontinae, a group whose members share the characteristic expanded pectoral and pelvic fins that together form a friction pad against rock. Older literature may refer to these fishes under various synonyms or misidentifications; the current valid combination is Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis Pellegrin & Chevey, 1935.

Morphology

Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis is a small, dorsoventrally flattened fish reaching approximately 2–2.5 in in standard length. The body profile is depressed throughout: head broad and low, rostrum flattened, snout overhanging a ventrally placed, fleshy mouth ringed with adhesive lips — an adaptation for rasping biofilm from rock surfaces in fast current. The paired pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged and held laterally, functioning together with the adhesive mouth as a suction disc that anchors the fish against torrential flow.

The skin is essentially scaleless — or covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales — leaving it smooth to the touch and permeable. This matters greatly in husbandry: copper-based and other chemical treatments penetrate easily and can be lethal at doses well-tolerated by scaled fish. Colouration is typically brownish to olive-tan on the dorsum, cryptically patterned to blend against the stone substrate, with a pale underside. Unlike the botiid loaches, Sinogastromyzon does not carry an erectile suborbital spine; its defensive adaptation is instead the adhesion and low profile that let it cling to rock rather than flee.

Habitat

This species is a product of the Red River system — the major river draining the mountains of Yunnan Province in southern China and flowing south through northern Vietnam to the Gulf of Tonkin. Within that catchment it inhabits fast-flowing, shallow hill streams and torrential reaches over bedrock, boulders and coarse gravel, where the current is powerful enough to sweep an unprepared fish away. The water here is cold, clear and saturated with oxygen, typically soft to moderately hard and on the alkaline side — FishBase records the species from subtropical Asia and Seriously Fish notes a working pH range of 7.0–9.0 and temperatures of 59–72 °F.

This is emphatically not a warm lowland river fish. The temperature band of 59–72 °F places it firmly in the cool-to-cold category, sharing it with hillstream specialists of the Annamite ranges and upland south-central China rather than the warm tropical streams of lowland Indochina. Individuals collected for the trade often come from altitudes where water temperatures are genuinely cool even in summer, and any captive environment that lets the water creep above 72–73 °F will stress or kill them.

Feeding

Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis is primarily a biofilm grazer and micropredator, spending most of its active time rasping diatoms, algae, periphyton and associated microinvertebrates from rock surfaces in fast current — the food assemblage ichthyologists call aufwuchs. In a home aquarium this translates to a critical dependency on mature, algae-covered rock surfaces; a fish placed in a bare or newly set-up tank has no food source it is adapted to exploit and will starve even when other foods are present and accepted. This is the single most common reason for the early deaths of imported Sinogastromyzon.

Beyond biofilm, the species will take small live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm — that wash into the current and are intercepted. Blanched greens such as courgette or spinach can supplement the diet. Seriously Fish emphasises that this fish is a specialised micropredator as well as a grazer, and that varied frozen foods are needed to maintain condition alongside biofilm-rich surfaces. Flake and pellet foods are rarely adequate alone; sinking wafers placed in the flow can help, but a mature tank growing its own biofilm is not optional — it is the foundation of successful keeping.

Mating

Next to nothing is known about the reproductive biology of Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis in the wild. By analogy with the better-studied members of Gastromyzontinae, breeding is presumed to occur in fast, cool, well-oxygenated stream reaches, likely triggered by seasonal changes in flow, temperature or photoperiod — cues that follow the monsoon and winter-to-spring temperature cycle of its mountain-stream habitat. Males of hillstream loaches in general are often slimmer and slightly smaller than ripe females, but reliable external sex characters for this genus in aquarium conditions have not been documented.

No courtship or spawning observations for captive Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis have been published. The cool temperature range and high-flow requirements that define its natural habitat are the first obstacle to any captive reproductive effort; the second is the nearly universal absence of both wild breeding records and captive observations for this genus.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis has not been recorded. Like the majority of hillstream loaches it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer depositing eggs among stones and gravel in fast current, with no parental care — the eggs and larvae are left to develop unattended in the oxygen-rich flow. A small number of gastromyzontine hillstream loaches, most notably Sewellia lineolata from the Annamite ranges, have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river-tank setups, and the general approach — very high turnover, mature biofilm surfaces, cool temperatures, a varied diet, and a well-conditioned mixed-sex group — applies as a theoretical framework for any attempt with Sinogastromyzon.

Honestly, however, no such attempt has been reported for this species, and the combination of cool temperature requirements, the need for a biologically mature tank and the lack of wild reproductive data makes a successful captive spawn an unlikely near-term prospect. Fish in the trade are almost certainly wild-collected from the Red River system. Keepers should acquire this species expecting to maintain it carefully, not breed it.

In the aquarium

Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis is a demanding, specialised fish that fails rapidly in the hands of keepers who treat it as a generic algae eater. The non-negotiables are flow, cold and maturity. Seriously Fish recommends a turnover of 15–20 times the tank volume per hour — far beyond what standard aquarium filtration delivers and almost always requiring a dedicated powerhead or circulating pump aimed across a rock-covered floor. The temperature ceiling of 72 °F is strict; in most temperate homes the tank needs no heating, and in summer active cooling may be necessary. Anything above 73–75 °F will stress the fish into rapid decline.

The tank must be mature before the fish is added. Flat rocks colonised by algae and diatoms provide both food and territory; without them the fish has nowhere to graze and nothing to eat. Because the skin is effectively scaleless, copper and many standard medications are hazardous — use only aquarium salt-free, copper-free treatments and at reduced doses where possible, even though this fish is not the ich magnet that botiid loaches are. Stock it with species tolerant of the same cool, fast-flowing conditions; warm community fish are incompatible. Several individuals can be kept together if the tank is large enough to provide multiple territories across the rock surface, which helps maintain natural behaviour and reduces stress-induced losses.

Fish often arrive malnourished and in poor condition. A quarantine period over algae-covered rock with frequent small feeds of live or frozen Daphnia and Artemia will stabilise them before introduction to the display tank. Patience and attention to water quality — cool, fast, clean and saturated with oxygen — are the foundations of keeping this species alive long-term.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sinogastromyzon tonkinensis as Data Deficient in June 2010, reflecting the absence of reliable population data rather than a judgement that the species is secure. Its range is restricted to the Red River system in northern Vietnam and adjacent Yunnan Province — a catchment subject to substantial modification through dam construction, agricultural run-off, deforestation on hillsides, and the sand extraction and river channelisation that degrade the clean gravel and bedrock substrate this fish depends on.

Hillstream specialists dependent on fast, clear, cool water are intrinsically vulnerable to sedimentation and thermal changes that follow catchment disturbance. Species with narrow elevational and hydrological niches rarely adapt to degraded conditions, and the Red River system supports numerous endemic hillstream taxa sharing the same pressures. Fish entering the aquarium trade are wild-collected — there is no captive breeding supply — so collection pressure is an additional consideration for any assessment of this species' status. The Data Deficient rating reflects an honest lack of survey data; updated field assessments are needed to determine whether populations are stable, declining or at risk.
