Taxonomy & naming
Parasewellia monolobata was formally described by Nguyen and Nguyen in 2005 on the basis of specimens from the Thu Bon River system in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam. The original description placed it in the genus Parasewellia, a segregate of the broader Sewellia group within the family Balitoridae (now often treated as Gastromyzontidae following molecular reassessment of the hillstream loach radiation). Subsequent revisions have questioned the standing of Parasewellia as distinct from Sewellia, and FishBase and related aggregators now record the valid combination as Sewellia monolobata, with Parasewellia monolobata as a junior synonym. Accordingly, the name Parasewellia monolobata may appear in older literature and trade listings while current ichthyological usage tends to Sewellia.
The species epithet monolobata references the single-lobed condition of a diagnostic anatomical feature identified in the original description. Sewellia itself is a genus of small rheophilic loaches centred on the Annamite ranges and adjacent drainages of Vietnam and Laos; it is perhaps best known to aquarists through Sewellia lineolata (the reticulated hillstream loach), whose successful aquarium breeding has given the genus a modest foothold in the hobby. Parasewellia monolobata sits in that same evolutionary neighbourhood but remains far less studied and virtually unknown in the trade.
Morphology
Like all members of the Gastromyzontidae, Parasewellia monolobata is profoundly depressed — flattened from top to bottom rather than from side to side. The head and pectoral girdle are broad and rounded, the belly is flat, and the pectoral and pelvic fins are held horizontally and enlarged to form, in conjunction with the flattened thorax and abdomen, an effective adhesive surface against smooth rock in fast current. This is not a suction cup in the anatomical sense but a hydrodynamic solution: the fish presses close to the substrate while rheotactic flow keeps it pinned. The arrangement allows the animal to feed on biofilm surfaces in currents that would tumble most fish away.
Formal size data for this species have not been published; it is likely small, as are most Sewellia-group loaches, probably reaching a few centimetres in standard length. The body is near-scaleless on the ventral surface, a feature typical of gastromyzontid hillstream loaches and one with direct implications for sensitivity to copper-based and other chemical treatments. No suborbital spine is present — that structure is characteristic of the botiid loaches, not of the gastromyzontid hillstream group.
Habitat
Parasewellia monolobata is an endemic of the Thu Bon River drainage in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, a catchment that descends steeply from the Annamite chain to the coastal plain. Hill-stream specialists in this region occupy the fast, shallow, cobble- and boulder-strewn upper reaches where dissolved oxygen is near saturation, temperatures are cool relative to the lowland rivers, and current velocity is high enough to keep substrate surfaces scoured but biofilm-rich. The substrate is typically exposed bedrock, cobbles and boulders with a thin living film of diatoms, algae, periphyton and organic particles — the food source the fish's body plan is optimised to exploit.
These are among the most demanding freshwater environments inhabited by any ornamental fish group: cool, fast, pristine and highly oxygenated. Any warming, silting or reduction in flow rapidly degrades the habitat by reducing dissolved oxygen and allowing organic matter to accumulate on surfaces. The species is therefore a narrow specialist with limited tolerance for altered or degraded conditions, a consideration that applies both to conservation and to aquarium husbandry.
Feeding
Parasewellia monolobata is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps the thin biofilm of diatoms, unicellular algae, periphyton and fine organic particles from rock surfaces using its modified mouth. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.7, consistent with a broadly herbivorous to omnivorous strategy leaning on plant-derived microalgae with some invertebrate and detrital input. In fast hill-stream habitat the biofilm is perpetually renewed by current-delivered nutrients and sunlight, and the fish moves methodically across rock faces harvesting it.
In an aquarium this dietary strategy translates directly to the central husbandry challenge: the fish requires a mature, well-lit tank with substantial algae and biofilm cover on its rock surfaces. It will not thrive on flake food alone, and in a new or bare tank with no biofilm it slowly starves regardless of what is offered. Supplementary foods — blanched spinach or courgette, spirulina-based wafers and sinking algae tabs — help bridge gaps but cannot substitute for a living biofilm base. Small frozen invertebrate foods such as daphnia or microworm are accepted and are valuable as a protein supplement.
Mating
No breeding observations for Parasewellia monolobata specifically have been published. Within the Sewellia group, the closest studied analogue is Sewellia lineolata, in which males develop pronounced tubercles on the snout and cheeks during breeding condition, probably serving a tactile role in courtship. If Parasewellia monolobata follows the same pattern, males in breeding condition would display similar surface tuberculation and be distinguishable from the smoother-faced females. Outside of breeding condition, sexing hillstream loaches of this group is difficult and usually requires close examination of body shape — ripe females may be noticeably broader across the abdomen when viewed from above.
Courting behaviour in Sewellia-group species observed in aquaria involves close following of the female by the male across rock surfaces, with the male positioning himself alongside or beneath her. The pair then moves quickly into crevices or between pebbles where eggs are deposited. Whether precisely this pattern holds for Parasewellia monolobata is unknown, but the shared body plan and habitat make it the best available inference.
Breeding
No confirmed spawning of Parasewellia monolobata in home aquaria has been documented. The broader Sewellia group — unlike most loach genera — does include species that will spawn in a well-established, strongly flowing aquarium: Sewellia lineolata in particular has been bred by experienced hobbyists, depositing small clutches of eggs among stones and gravel with no subsequent parental care. The eggs are simply left where they fall among the substrate and either hatch or are eaten. If Parasewellia monolobata follows this model, successful breeding would require a mature high-flow tank with a biofilm-coated rocky substrate, excellent water quality, cool temperatures and a sex ratio that gives females some relief from persistent male attention.
In practice, the species is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby, so breeding accounts do not exist. Any keeper fortunate enough to acquire it and observe spawning behaviour would be contributing new information to the understanding of the genus. The honest position is that breeding is biologically plausible given what is known of related Sewellia, but completely unverified for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Parasewellia monolobata is not a fish for the casual purchaser or the newly established community tank. Its ecological specialisation is absolute: it needs cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water, and a mature rockscape colonised by biofilm and algae. A tank that meets these requirements looks less like a conventional community setup and more like a dedicated hillstream biotope — strong flow from a powerful filter or spray bar, smooth river cobbles and boulders arranged to create varied current, bright lighting to promote algal growth, and temperatures at the cool end of what most tropical species tolerate. The tank must be well established before the fish is introduced, because a new tank has no biofilm.
The near-scaleless ventral surface that suits this fish for torrent life also makes it chemically vulnerable: copper-based medications and full-strength treatments are poorly tolerated. Any disease treatment should use half-doses, copper-free formulations and be delivered with extra aeration given the fish's high oxygen demand. Because this species is so rarely encountered in the hobby, sourcing it at all is difficult; a keeper who obtains one should document its behaviour and husbandry carefully. It is best kept with other hillstream specialists of similar size and similar requirements — attempting to mix it with warm-water community fish almost always ends in stress or death for the loach.
Conservation
Parasewellia monolobata has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category. As a Vietnamese stream endemic restricted to the Thu Bon River drainage of Quang Nam Province, it faces the pressures common to narrow-range hillstream specialists throughout the Annamite region: forest clearance in the catchment reduces the canopy that buffers stream temperatures and stabilises banks; agricultural run-off and sedimentation degrade the biofilm surfaces the fish depends on; and any alteration of flow regime — whether from dam construction, water extraction or land-use change — can eliminate the cool, turbulent, oxygen-saturated conditions without which the species cannot survive.
The Thu Bon catchment supports a wider community of endemic freshwater fishes and is not without conservation concern. Because this species is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, collection pressure from the hobby is presumably negligible at present, but its narrow endemism means that habitat loss at a local scale could eliminate the species entirely. A formal IUCN assessment drawing on current population and range data would be a meaningful step toward understanding its status.
