Physoschistura brunneana is a tiny stone loach known only from the Inlé Lake basin of Myanmar, where it lives among the clear, flowing feeder streams that drain into the lake. It is a true nemacheilid — a small, bold, bottom-hugging micro-predator built for cool, well-oxygenated water rather than a warm, still tank. At barely 2 in, it is one of the smallest loaches in this atlas, and like many single-basin stream endemics it is genuinely data-sparse: no dedicated IUCN assessment exists, breeding has scarcely been documented, and much of what is known comes from taxonomic and distributional records rather than aquarium study. It occasionally reaches the trade as the "rosy loach," sometimes mixed in shipments with its close relative Physoschistura mango.

Taxonomy & naming

Physoschistura brunneana was described by the Scottish zoologist Thomas Nelson Annandale in 1918, based on material from the Inlé Lake basin in the Shan Hills of Myanmar (then Burma). Like many small Southeast and South Asian stone loaches, it has passed through several genus placements over the past century as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were progressively split apart; the Catalog of Fishes — the authority followed here for valid names — currently places it in Physoschistura, a genus of small nemacheilids distributed across Myanmar, northeastern India and adjacent parts of mainland Southeast Asia.

It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest and most species-rich family of loaches, encompassing hundreds of small, hardy, generally similar-looking species from clear headwater and hill streams across Eurasia. Physoschistura is a relatively obscure genus even within that family, and P. brunneana is one of its lesser-known members, overshadowed in the trade by its more frequently exported congener P. mango.

Morphology

This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach reaching only about 2 in in standard length, consistent with the diminutive build typical of Nemacheilidae. The body carries 10 to 14 dark bars along its flanks, a pattern shared by many stone loaches and used to distinguish related species. The lateral line is incomplete, running only partway down the body — a common feature in small nemacheilids that live in shallow, low-pressure stream flow rather than open water. The dorsal fin carries 13 soft rays and the anal fin 8, figures used in formal species diagnosis.

As in other stone loaches, the mouth is small, underslung and surrounded by barbels adapted for probing the substrate, and the skin is effectively naked, with only tiny, deeply embedded scales. Unlike many botiid loaches, males of this species are recorded as lacking a suborbital flap, a small but taxonomically useful detail noted in the formal literature. Beyond these diagnostic points, detailed morphological description is sparse — this is a poorly studied, narrow-range endemic rather than a well-documented aquarium staple.

Habitat

Physoschistura brunneana is endemic to the Inlé Lake basin in Myanmar's Shan Hills, one of Southeast Asia's notable centres of localized freshwater endemism. It is not a lake-dwelling fish in the open-water sense; like other stone loaches it is expected to inhabit the clear, flowing feeder streams and tributaries that drain into the lake, rather than the lake's open, often turbid or vegetated shallows.

As a nemacheilid of hill-stream affinity, it belongs in cool-to-warm, clear, well-oxygenated, flowing fresh water — the standard habitat template for this family — rather than warm, still or blackwater conditions. Closely related congeners from the same region, such as P. mango, are documented at 72–79 °F in soft to moderately hard water, and P. brunneana likely occupies similar conditions given its shared range and habits, though dedicated field data for this exact species remain limited.

Feeding

Direct dietary data for Physoschistura brunneana has not been documented in the sources available, but its build and habitat place it firmly among the micro-predatory stone loaches: a small-mouthed bottom forager that picks small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny stream-bed organisms from among gravel, stones and detritus in fast-flowing water.

In the aquarium, stone loaches of this type generally accept small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia readily, take sinking micro-pellets once settled, and often ignore flake altogether. Feeding should be offered at the substrate, where this species naturally forages, rather than in open water.

Mating

No specific account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Physoschistura brunneana has been documented in the available sources. Sex-specific external differences are limited to the noted absence of a suborbital flap in males, a taxonomic character rather than a breeding cue, and no broader account of secondary sexual characteristics or courtship display exists in the literature consulted.

As with the great majority of small nemacheilid stone loaches, this is a poorly studied aspect of the species' biology. What can be said with confidence is drawn from the family pattern: stone loaches typically do not pair or display in any elaborate way, and ripening is generally tied to seasonal changes in flow and temperature in their home streams — conditions rarely replicated deliberately in a home aquarium.

Breeding

Physoschistura brunneana has, as far as is documented, never been deliberately bred in the aquarium hobby. In line with the general pattern for stone and brook loaches of the family Nemacheilidae, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward.

Given how little is recorded even about its distribution and basic biology, this should be read as an inference from its family and genus rather than a documented observation for this exact species — a fair example of the honest data gap that surrounds many small, single-basin stream endemics. Breeding.mode here reflects that: an egg-scatterer with no parental care, rarely or never achieved in captivity, and largely unstudied even in the wild.

In the aquarium

Physoschistura brunneana is a genuinely specialist fish, better suited to a dedicated nano stream-loach setup than a general community tank. At only 2 in, a modest aquarium can house a small group, but the water itself needs care: cool-to-mild, clear, well-oxygenated and flowing, mimicking the hill-stream feeder waters of the Inlé basin rather than a warm, still tank. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate, good current, and high dissolved oxygen are more important to this species' welfare than tank size alone.

Like other nemacheilids it is essentially scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. It should be kept only with other small, current-loving, peaceful species that will not out-compete it for food at the substrate. Because it so rarely appears in the trade — and is sometimes mixed in with shipments of the better-known Physoschistura mango — a keeper acquiring this species should confirm identification carefully before assuming standard rosy-loach care applies without adjustment.

Conservation

Physoschistura brunneana has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is treated here as Not Evaluated. This is a common situation for small, single-basin stream endemics that receive little targeted study, and it should not be read as evidence of either safety or risk — simply an absence of assessment.

As an Inlé Lake basin endemic, the species is tied to the fate of one of Myanmar's most ecologically significant and human-pressured freshwater systems; the lake and its feeder streams face well-documented pressures from sedimentation, agricultural runoff and water-level change, though no species-specific conservation data exists to quantify the effect on this loach. The aquarium trade in this species appears to be small and incidental, occasionally supplied as bycatch alongside the more commonly exported Physoschistura mango, rather than the target of dedicated collection.
