Taxonomy & naming
Sabanejewia caspia was described by the Baltic-German naturalist Karl Eduard Eichwald in 1838, hence the parentheses around his name marking a later change of genus. It belongs to Sabanejewia, a genus of small spined loaches split out from the old catch-all Cobitis, and sits within the family Cobitidae — the true spined and pond loaches, named for the erectile suborbital spine shared across the group. The Catalog of Fishes lists Sabanejewia caspia as the currently valid combination.
Taxonomic treatment of the Caspian spined loach has shifted over the decades as karyotype and morphological work reshuffled the Sabanejewia/Cobitis complex; a 2019 study in the Journal of Ichthyology (Vasil'eva & Vasil'ev) revisited its morphology, karyotype, distribution and phylogenetic placement, and explicitly flagged it as a species that is 'well-known but practically unexplored' — cited more than it has actually been studied in the field.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate loach reaching a maximum recorded length of about 3.5 in total length, with an adult weight of only a few grams. Like other Cobitidae it carries a sharp, erectile spine tucked in a groove beneath each eye, used defensively and capable of snagging fine-mesh nets — a feature worth handling with care even on so small a fish. Its scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked and, as with most true loaches, sensitive to strong medications and copper-based treatments.

It sits alongside other Eurasian spined loaches (Cobitis) and the dojo/weather loach (Misgurnus) as members of this family that live in temperate, unheated conditions rather than the warm, soft, acidic water associated with tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach.
Feeding
