Capoeta gracilis is a medium-sized, algae-scraping cyprinid from the inland rivers and basins of Iran, reaching up to 14 in in total length. Described by Keyserling in 1861, it belongs to the Capoeta capoeta species complex — a group of large-scale barbs distributed across the Aralo-Caspian drainages from Turkey through Central Asia. In Iran, C. gracilis is found across the Caspian Sea basin, the Urmia Lake basin, and the Esfahan basin of the interior, making it one of the more widely distributed native freshwater fishes in the country. Like all members of its genus, it is an algae specialist with a distinctive inferior mouth armed with a horny lip sheath for scraping periphyton from rocky substrates.

Taxonomy & naming

Capoeta gracilis was described by Keyserling in 1861, with the type locality given as rivers near Esfahan in central Iran. It has long been treated as a subspecies of the wide-ranging Capoeta capoeta — appearing in older literature as Capoeta capoeta gracilis — but it is now generally treated as a distinct species within the C. capoeta complex. The GBIF records it under the Aralo-Caspian group of large-scale capoetas.

The genus Capoeta belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is characterised by algae-scraping cyprinids with an elongate, cylindrical body, a short dorsal fin with a last unbranched ray that may be ossified, an inferior mouth with a horny lower lip sheath adapted for grazing periphyton, and pharyngeal teeth arranged in three rows. Molecular and morphological studies of Caspian basin Capoeta populations have revealed considerable taxonomic complexity across the genus, and the boundaries between C. gracilis and other members of the complex remain the subject of ongoing revision.

The specific epithet gracilis is Latin for "slender" or "graceful", referring to the relatively streamlined body form compared with some congeners.

Morphology

Capoeta gracilis is a moderately large barb, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 14 in for male or unsexed individuals. The body is elongate and roughly cylindrical in cross-section — more so than the deep-bodied Southeast Asian barbs — consistent with a benthic lifestyle in flowing water.

The most distinctive feature of the genus is the inferior mouth bearing a hardened, horny lower lip sheath used for scraping algae and periphyton from rocks. The last unbranched dorsal ray may be stiffened. Pharyngeal teeth are arranged in three rows. Colouration in Capoeta species is generally silvery to brownish on the flanks with pale or yellowish ventral surfaces, though precise colour data for C. gracilis specifically is sparse in the available literature.

Habitat

Capoeta gracilis inhabits the freshwater drainages of Iran across three major basin systems: the Caspian Sea basin (southern and southwestern slopes of the Alborz and Zagros ranges), the Urmia Lake basin in northwestern Iran, and the Esfahan (Isfahan) basin of the interior plateau. The type locality is the rivers near Esfahan in central Iran.

Habitat modelling for Capoeta in the Caspian and Namak basins indicates preferences for substrates with coarse stone diameters — reflecting the species' reliance on hard, rocky surfaces for algae-grazing — along with relatively warm temperatures and lower flow velocities. There is a notable seasonal shift: in summer, individuals favour warmer, lower-pH microhabitats; in autumn, higher-pH conditions are preferred. The species is classified as benthopelagic and subtropical by FishBase. Waters across its range are generally neutral to alkaline and moderately hard, typical of the Iranian plateau and montane foothills.

Feeding

Capoeta gracilis is a herbivore-detritivore specialised for scraping periphyton from hard substrates. The genus as a whole feeds primarily on river periphyton, which includes algae from the divisions Chlorophyta (green algae), Charophyta (stoneworts), and Bacillariophyta (diatoms), along with plant detritus. FishBase assigns C. gracilis a trophic level of 2.5, consistent with an omnivorous or primarily herbivorous diet.

The inferior mouth with its horny lip sheath is the key morphological adaptation for this feeding mode, allowing the fish to rasp algae from the surface of rocks and cobbles in flowing water. This feeding guild positions Capoeta gracilis as an important consumer within benthic algal communities in Iranian river systems.

Mating

Capoeta gracilis, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed, and there is no pair bond beyond the act of spawning itself. During the breeding season, ripe males pursue gravid females and courtship involves the male driving the female through suitable spawning areas — typically areas with coarser substrates or aquatic vegetation — where eggs and milt are released together.

There is no territory defended beyond transiently during active courtship, and no parental role is assumed by either sex after spawning. In many larger Palearctic barbs, spawning is seasonal and often tied to spring temperature rises and river conditions; C. gracilis likely follows a similar seasonal pattern given its temperate to subtropical distribution in Iran.

Breeding

As with other members of the Capoeta capoeta complex, C. gracilis is presumed to be a seasonal broadcast spawner. Eggs are scattered over gravel, rock, or among aquatic vegetation and receive no parental attention; adults may consume their own eggs if given the opportunity. Hatching time and larval development will depend on water temperature.

No captive-breeding accounts specific to C. gracilis appear in the available hobby or scientific literature. The species is not an established aquarium fish, and detailed husbandry data are absent. Breeding biology is inferred from the general egg-scattering, non-guarding pattern universal to the barb group and from what is known of related Capoeta species from Anatolian and Caspian drainages.

In the aquarium

Capoeta gracilis is not a species commonly encountered in the aquarium trade. It is a large barb — potentially reaching 14 in — and its native waters are cool to moderately warm, neutral to alkaline, and moderately hard: conditions quite different from the tropical softwater tanks suited to Southeast Asian barbs. Keepers with experience of large Palearctic cyprinids (barbels, mahseers, or related Capoeta) would find the general requirements familiar.

If kept, it would require a spacious aquarium with strong filtration, good oxygenation, and a substrate that includes smooth rocks or flat stones on which the fish can graze algae. Diet should include algae-based foods — spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables, and natural algae growth on rocks — supplemented with sinking pellets. Given its size and temperate origins, it is better suited to a specialist or public aquarium setting than a standard home tank. Data on specific care requirements in captivity are sparse.

Conservation

Capoeta gracilis has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and is currently listed as Not Evaluated (NE). FishBase records a low vulnerability score (25 out of 100), suggesting that, at a broad level, the species is not considered immediately at risk.

Nevertheless, its restriction to the freshwater drainages of Iran — the Caspian basin, Urmia Lake basin, and Esfahan basin — places it within systems that face significant and ongoing anthropogenic pressure. Lake Urmia itself has experienced catastrophic shrinkage due to water diversion and climate change, and rivers across the Iranian plateau are affected by dam construction, groundwater extraction for agriculture, and increasing aridity. The taxonomic complexity of the Capoeta capoeta complex also means that precise distributional limits and population trends for C. gracilis specifically remain poorly understood. A formal conservation assessment incorporating molecular data and updated range information would be valuable.
