Taxonomy & naming
Sabanejewia caucasica was described by the Russian ichthyologist Lev Berg in 1906. It belongs to the genus Sabanejewia, a group of small Eurasian spined loaches split out from the broader Cobitis in recognition of anatomical and genetic differences, within the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches, named for the erectile suborbital spine they all carry.
Modern molecular work has helped stabilise the taxonomy of this genus, which historically suffered from confusion between similar-looking, geographically overlapping species. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial and nuclear markers confirms Sabanejewia caucasica as a distinct, monophyletic clade within the genus, separate from relatives such as S. aurata, S. balcanica and S. vallachica. The Catalog of Fishes recognises the combination Sabanejewia caucasica (Berg, 1906) as valid, and the genus name is retained here.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate loach, reported to reach a modest maximum of about 4 in total length — most individuals are considerably smaller. Like all Cobitidae it carries an erectile spine housed in a groove beneath the eye, which it can flick out defensively; in this species the two branches of the spine are of similar length, a detail used to separate it from close relatives.
The flanks are marbled rather than marked with the bold, evenly spaced midlateral blotches seen in some congeners, and the dorsal saddle markings tend to run together rather than staying as separate spots. The body is slender and only lightly armoured with small, deeply set scales, leaving the skin close to the surface — a trait shared across the family and one that matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated in captivity.
Habitat
Sabanejewia caucasica is native to the Caspian basin, found from the Kuma drainage in Russia south to the Babol area of Iran, across parts of the Ciscaucasian and Transcaucasian region. It lives over gravel substrate along the steep banks of small rivulets and streams roughly 3–10 metres wide and under a metre deep, typically in foothill and plains sections of river systems, sometimes extending into irrigation or drainage channels.
This is a temperate, coldwater fish, not a tropical one — it belongs with Cobitis and the dojo loach Misgurnus as species suited to cool, well-oxygenated running water rather than a heated tropical tank. It is entirely freshwater and demersal, spending its time on or in the substrate rather than in open water.
Feeding
As a benthic omnivore with a mid-range trophic level, Sabanejewia caucasica sifts the gravel and sand of its stream bed for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and other tiny prey — along with detritus and organic material, in the same sand-sifting style typical of the family. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.2, consistent with an opportunistic, mixed invertebrate-and-detritus diet rather than a specialised predator.
In a coldwater aquarium or pond setting it would be expected to take sinking foods readily, along with small live or frozen invertebrate foods, provided it has a soft substrate to forage through. Anyone keeping it would need to treat it as a coldwater species: cool, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a soft gravel or sand substrate that lets it burrow and forage naturally, in the manner of its home rivulets in the Caucasus foothills.
As with other Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so any treatment should follow the reduced-dose caution used for the family generally. Conservation
