Schistura clatrata is a small stone loach known from the Kong River basin of southern Laos, part of the Mekong drainage. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that supplies the aquarium hobby's "stone" or "brook" loaches — slim, bold, bottom-hugging micro-predators built for cool, fast, well-oxygenated streams rather than the placid tanks many keepers imagine when they hear "loach." Described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000, it is documented mainly from targeted ichthyological surveys, and like many single-river Schistura it is genuinely data-sparse outside the scientific literature: there is no dedicated aquarium care profile to draw on, and much of what follows leans on what is well established for the genus as a whole.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura clatrata was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000. Kottelat has authored a large share of the described diversity within Schistura, a genus that itself was carved out of the old, unwieldy catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus during the taxonomic reshuffling of Cobitoidea over the past several decades. No historical synonymy under an older genus combination turned up for this species in the available records — it appears to have been named directly into Schistura rather than transferred in from elsewhere.

The species sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Nemacheilidae is by far the largest loach family, and Schistura is one of its largest genera, with a great many species known only from the single stream system where they were first collected — a pattern that holds for S. clatrata. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid name and combination; nothing in the sources reviewed here suggests a need to depart from Schistura clatrata as currently recognized.

Morphology

As a member of Schistura, S. clatrata is expected to show the genus's typical build: a slender, elongate, near-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to hugging the substrate in current, and the small, barbel-fringed mouth typical of benthic nemacheilids. Like other true loaches, it almost certainly carries an erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove below the eye — a defensive feature shared across the group and worth respecting when handling or netting the fish. The skin is expected to be effectively naked or very sparsely scaled, another hallmark of the family, which has direct consequences for how the species tolerates medication.

As with other true loaches, the near-scaleless skin implied by its family membership means any future keeper should treat it as medication-sensitive: avoid copper-based treatments and use half-strength doses of other medications where possible. Given the total absence of a hobby track record, this species is best regarded as a candidate for specialist keepers working from wild-collected or research-adjacent stock, not a fish to source casually.
