Taxonomy & naming
Schistura ephelis was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000. It sits in the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches, by far the largest and most species-rich family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one that has absorbed a great deal of taxonomic reshuffling as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart over recent decades. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it stands as Schistura ephelis.
As with many recently described Schistura, this species is known from limited material and a narrow type locality, and it has not attracted the follow-up taxonomic or genetic work that would place it more securely relative to its many congeners. Nothing in the available record suggests a synonymy or a pending revision; it should simply be treated as a distinct, poorly known species for now.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Schistura ephelis is a slender, elongate, bottom-dwelling loach built for holding position in current rather than for open swimming. Reported to reach around 3 in in standard length, it is a modestly sized fish even by stone-loach standards. As in all Schistura, the skin carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless — a trait shared across the family that matters greatly for how the fish should be handled and medicated.
The species' epithet, ephelis, is Greek for "freckle," a direct reference to a scatter of small dots across the cheeks that helped distinguish this fish from other Schistura in the original description. Beyond that diagnostic detail and its erectile suborbital spine — the small, protrusible spine tucked in a groove below the eye that is characteristic of the wider loach group and used defensively against predators and careless hands — detailed morphological data for this species is sparse.
Habitat
The species is known from the Nam San, a tributary within the Nam Ngum basin, itself part of the greater Mekong drainage in Laos. Its recorded habitat is riffles: shallow, fast-flowing, clear stretches of stream running over stones and cobble, exactly the kind of highly oxygenated pocket water that Nemacheilidae as a family specialise in.
No broader distribution has been documented — this is, on current evidence, a single-stream or narrow-catchment endemic, a pattern that recurs again and again across Schistura and is one reason so many of the genus's several hundred species carry a Data Deficient assessment. There is no indication this is anything but a strictly freshwater, flowing-water fish; nothing in the record points to lentic, brackish or still-water habitat.
Feeding
Schistura ephelis has not been the subject of a dedicated dietary study, but its biology follows the well-established pattern for small nemacheilids in fast, clear streams: a benthic micro-predator that picks small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — from among stones and gravel, along with whatever zooplankton drifts through riffle water.
In the aquarium, genus-typical Schistura take readily to small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp, along with sinking pellets sized for a small fish; like most bottom-oriented micro-predators they are often reluctant to bother with floating flake. A varied diet of small meaty foods, offered where the fish forages rather than at the surface, best matches what is known of the group.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism has been documented for Schistura ephelis, and the species has not been observed spawning in the wild or in captivity. For Nemacheilidae generally, courtship is understated: there is no elaborate pairing display, cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour anywhere in this family — a point worth stressing since those strategies belong to entirely different fish groups (gobies and cichlids, respectively), not loaches.
What is known of stone-loach reproduction in the wild points to spawning triggered by rising, well-oxygenated flow, with ripe adults releasing eggs directly into fast water rather than forming pairs or defending territory. Nothing in the available sources suggests this particular species departs from that pattern, but with no direct observations recorded, this remains an inference from the family rather than a documented fact about S. ephelis itself.
Breeding
Breeding biology for this species is essentially unrecorded, and the honest summary is that it has not been bred in the aquarium. What is understood for Nemacheilidae as a family is that they are egg-scatterers: females release eggs over gravel or bare stone in flowing water, with no nest-building and no parental care of any kind, and spawning in the wild can occur once or repeatedly through a productive season as conditions allow.
There is no report of Schistura ephelis being kept, let alone spawned, in captivity, which is unsurprising for a fish known from a single small tributary and otherwise represented mainly by museum and database records. Anyone acquiring this species should treat successful captive reproduction as essentially unprecedented territory rather than something to expect.
In the aquarium
Schistura ephelis is not an established aquarium species, and any care information has to be extrapolated cautiously from its genus and family rather than from direct experience with this fish. Nemacheilid stone loaches from riffle habitat generally want cool-to-mild, clear, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water over a smooth gravel or sand substrate, with rockwork, driftwood and plants offering cover — a setup built around strong flow and high dissolved oxygen rather than a still, densely planted tank.
As with all near-scaleless loaches, extra caution is warranted with medications and copper-based treatments, which this thin-skinned family absorbs readily; half-doses and gentle products are the safer default across the genus. Given the total absence of a documented care history for this exact species, and its apparent restriction to a single small Laotian stream, it should be regarded as a specialist or research fish rather than a mainstream hobby choice, and any specimens that do reach the trade almost certainly come from wild collection rather than any farmed source.
Conservation
Schistura ephelis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known about its population size, trend, or the full extent of its range beyond the Nam San tributary of the Nam Ngum, within the Mekong basin of Laos. A Data Deficient listing is not a clean bill of health — it means there is not enough information to judge the fish's status either way, which for a narrow-range stream endemic is itself a reason for caution.
No directed conservation measures or population monitoring for this species are documented in the available sources. Its apparent restriction to a single small catchment makes it inherently vulnerable to localised pressures such as sedimentation, deforestation or damming, in common with many other narrow-range Mekong-basin nemacheilids, even though none of those specific threats has been formally documented for this species.
