Taxonomy & naming
Schistura kengtungensis was described in 1936 by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler, who placed it in the now largely dismantled genus Nemacheilus — hence the parentheses around his name in the current citation. Fowler's type material came from Laun We (also spelled Loi Mwe), a stream near Keng Tung in Myanmar's eastern Shan State, at an elevation of around 5,600 feet, which gives the species its epithet.
Like the great majority of Southeast and East Asian stone loaches once lumped into the catch-all genus Nemacheilus (and its close relative Noemacheilus), it was later reclassified into Schistura as the family Nemacheilidae was progressively split along better-resolved lines. The Catalog of Fishes and ITIS both now list Schistura kengtungensis as the accepted combination, and it belongs to the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Older literature and some database entries may still carry the synonym Nemacheilus kengtungensis.
Morphology
This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach typical of its genus, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 4.5 in standard length, though most individuals seen in streams and in the trade run closer to 2.5 in. Like other Schistura it has a complete or nearly complete lateral line running the length of the body and a fairly modest dorsal fin with roughly eight and a half branched rays, set well back over the body — features used to separate it from superficially similar congeners in the same river systems.
As with virtually all true loaches, Schistura kengtungensis carries a small erectile spine beneath the eye and a body that is functionally near-scaleless, the scales being minute and deeply embedded rather than absent outright. Sources differ on whether the sexes are visibly different: FishBase notes no confirmed sexual dimorphism in the species, while aquarium literature describes females as somewhat deeper-bodied than males, particularly when carrying eggs — a common and reasonable but not rigorously confirmed distinction in small stream loaches of this kind.
Habitat
Schistura kengtungensis lives in small, shallow, high-gradient streams with cobble and boulder substrates — the classic upland stone-loach habitat of clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water. It has been recorded across a broad swath of the upper Mekong basin and its neighbouring drainages, with confirmed populations in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Yunnan Province in China, and additional records from the Salween and Chao Phraya basins.
This is unambiguously a cool-to-moderate flowing-water fish, not a warm, still, blackwater species. It forages benthically among the stones of its home streams, holding station or moving in short bursts against a current that keeps the water clean, cold and saturated with dissolved oxygen — conditions the aquarium must reproduce closely if the fish is to thrive long-term.
Feeding
In the wild this is a classic stream micro-predator, sitting at a trophic level around 3.0 — it forages over the bottom for small insect larvae, worms, tiny crustaceans and zooplankton picked from between and beneath the cobbles, rather than grazing algae or biofilm. It is broadly omnivorous within that predatory framing rather than a specialised hunter of any one prey type.
In the aquarium it will take good-quality sinking dried foods, but does noticeably better, and colours up better, on a diet supplemented with live or frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia) and bloodworm. Because it is a bottom forager used to picking food from crevices in moving water rather than competing at the surface, food should reach the substrate reliably — flake left to drift is easily lost to faster mid-water fish before this loach ever finds it.
Mating
Almost nothing has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura kengtungensis specifically; like the majority of small Nemacheilidae, its reproductive biology in the wild has not been closely studied. What can be said is grounded in the wider pattern for the genus and family: stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers rather than pair-forming or nest-building fish, and spawning is presumed to be tied to the fast, well-oxygenated water and seasonal conditions of their home streams rather than to any elaborate courtship display.
A ripe female of this species has been recorded at just 2 in standard length, well under the species' maximum size, indicating that sexual maturity is reached at a modest fraction of adult length. Beyond that, data on this species' mating behaviour is genuinely sparse, and nothing should be assumed beyond the general Nemacheilidae pattern.
Breeding
Schistura kengtungensis is unrecorded as bred in the home aquarium, and its reproduction should be described honestly rather than filled in with guesswork. Like other stone and brook loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry afterward — the loach equivalent of a broadcast spawner, not a cave-guarding or mouthbrooding species.
The barriers to captive breeding are the usual ones for small stream Nemacheilidae: reliable sexing is difficult, the fish is rarely kept in the numbers or the sustained high-flow, high-oxygen conditions that might trigger spawning, and there is no commercial incentive to work out the details, since the species is neither farmed nor bred at scale. Any fish available in the trade should be assumed wild-collected rather than tank-raised.
In the aquarium
This is a fish for a dedicated flowing-stream setup rather than a general community tank. SeriouslyFish recommends a minimum footprint of around 90×12 in with strong water movement, a cobble-and-boulder-style substrate, and stable, cool-to-moderate water — roughly 64–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 — with high dissolved oxygen maintained by strong filtration and surface agitation or an additional powerhead. It should not be paired with slow-moving, long-finned tankmates, which cannot compete with its need for current and its active, darting foraging style, and ideally is kept alongside other robust, flow-loving stream fish.
As with other true loaches, its skin is functionally scaleless, which makes it more permeable and more sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments than typical scaled fish; dose conservatively and watch it closely during any treatment. Because detailed care data on this exact species is comparatively thin, keepers should treat published figures as a solid starting point and pay close attention to their own fish's condition, erring toward cooler, cleaner, faster-flowing water rather than a warm, still setup.
Conservation
Schistura kengtungensis is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, with the assessment dated July 2011. It is known from a reasonably wide area of the upper Mekong basin and adjacent drainages across Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Yunnan, China, which likely accounts for its favourable status relative to many single-stream endemic loaches in the same family.
No major species-specific threats are documented in the available sources. As with much of mainland Southeast Asia's freshwater fauna, the broader pressures facing streams of this kind — damming, sedimentation, deforestation and water extraction across the Mekong, Salween and Chao Phraya systems — are the sort of habitat-level risks that could affect this species over time, even though it is not currently flagged as declining. It is not a species with any established aquarium-trade demand driving collection.
