Taxonomy & naming
Schistura magnifluvis was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990. It has always been placed in Schistura, one of the largest genera of Nemacheilidae, and GBIF records find no earlier combination under the older catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus — this species appears to have been described directly into Schistura rather than reassigned into it, unlike many of its relatives that were shuffled out of those broader genera as the family was revised through the late 20th century.
The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid name, and it continues to list the species as Schistura magnifluvis in the family Nemacheilidae. The genus itself remains taxonomically active — new Schistura are still being described from streams across mainland Southeast Asia — so the boundaries of the genus, if not the identity of this particular species, may continue to shift.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate nemacheilid loach, reported to reach roughly 3.5 in standard length in the wild, with some hobby sources giving a slightly larger practical maximum around 4 in. The body carries a series of 13 to 14 dark bars along its flanks, the typical banded stone-loach pattern that provides camouflage against mottled gravel and stone substrate.
As in other members of the family, the skin is effectively naked — nemacheilids are near-scaleless or carry only fine embedded scales — which makes the group sensitive to medication and to rough handling. Like other true loaches it also carries the small erectile spine below the eye that gives the group its common defensive weapon, though it is far less conspicuous than the heavy suborbital spine of a botiid. Specific data on this species' fin structure and finer anatomical detail beyond the FishBase summary is sparse.
Habitat
Schistura magnifluvis is native to the middle Mekong basin, recorded from the Nam Heung basin through to the Xe Don system in Thailand and Laos, and it probably also occurs in Cambodia given the connectivity of that stretch of river. It has been found both in smaller tributary streams and in the main Mekong channel itself, over substrates ranging from mud to stone, and in water with moderate to fast current — a benthopelagic fish that lives and forages close to the bottom rather than in open water.
Reported water conditions span a fairly wide band: FishBase gives 73–82 °F with pH 5.8–7.0 and moderate hardness, while hobby sources describe cooler, softer, faster-flowing brook and hillstream conditions down toward 61 °F. Taken together this points to a fish of flowing, well-oxygenated Mekong-basin water that can tolerate a range of temperatures rather than a narrow specialist, but it is not a warm, still-water species — current and oxygenation are the constant.
Feeding
Reported trophic data place this species fairly low on the food web for a loach, with a trophic level around 2.8 suggesting a diet leaning toward detritus and algae alongside small invertebrates, rather than the more strictly carnivorous habit of many Schistura. In practice it likely grazes biofilm, algae and organic material off stones along with picking up small aquatic invertebrates from the substrate, in the manner typical of small benthic stream loaches.
In the aquarium, hobby sources report it takes sinking pellets and flakes readily, along with frozen foods such as mosquito larvae and brine shrimp. A varied diet that includes some meaty frozen food alongside sinking dry food appears to suit it, and as a bottom forager it should be fed where it can reach the food before faster fish clear it.
Mating
No detailed account of courtship or spawning behaviour for this species has surfaced in available sources. FishBase notes limited reproductive data, recording a single mature female of 2.5 in standard length carrying ripe ovules of 0.5 in — evidence that females mature at a modest size and produce a relatively small number of proportionally large eggs, but nothing about pairing, triggers or spawning sites. As with most Nemacheilidae, spawning in this genus is presumed to follow the general stone-loach pattern of egg-scattering in fast water rather than any pair-bonding or nest-building behaviour, but this has not been documented for Schistura magnifluvis specifically.
Breeding
Schistura magnifluvis has not been bred in the home aquarium as far as published hobby sources record. Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, the expected mode is egg-scattering: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry afterward. This is consistent with the broader pattern across Nemacheilidae, where captive breeding is rare and this species offers no exception on record.
Given how little is documented even about its wild reproduction, honest guidance here is limited: keepers should not expect this to be a species that spawns in a general community setup, and anyone attempting it would essentially be starting from scratch, mimicking the fast, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated flowing water of its native Mekong tributaries as the closest available cue.
In the aquarium
This is a small, unassuming loach best suited to a dedicated flowing-water setup rather than a generic community tank. Hobby sources describe it as territorial among its own kind and recommend numerous hiding places — bogwood, plants, rocky caves and scattered cobbles — to break sightlines and give individuals somewhere to retreat. A tank should provide strong water movement and high oxygenation to replicate the moderate-to-fast Mekong stream and river-margin water it comes from, with a substrate mixing sand, gravel and stone.
As with other true loaches, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Reported water chemistry spans a fairly broad range (roughly 61–82 °F depending on source, pH from soft-acidic to neutral), which suggests some flexibility, but keepers should aim for the cooler, well-oxygenated end of that range with good flow rather than a warm, still tank. Given how little captive-care experience is documented for this species, a cautious, observant approach is warranted.
Conservation
Schistura magnifluvis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a range that spans a substantial stretch of the middle Mekong basin across Thailand, Laos and probably Cambodia, using both tributary streams and the main river channel. It does not appear to face the acute single-site pressure that threatens some narrow-range stone-loach endemics.
The wider Mekong basin faces well-known pressures from hydropower dam construction, sediment and flow alteration, and water quality degradation, and species that use both mainstream river habitat and connected tributaries — as this one does — are exposed to those basin-scale changes even without a specific documented decline. It is not established in the aquarium trade in any volume, so trade collection pressure is not considered a factor for this species.
