Taxonomy & naming
Schistura mahnerti was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1990 as part of his revision of the Indochinese nemacheilines, originally published under the combination Nemacheilus mahnerti before the genus Schistura was more broadly applied to this group of Southeast Asian stone loaches. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches and the one that holds the bulk of the small "stone" or "brook" loaches spread across Asia, the Middle East and parts of Europe.
The genus Schistura is large and taxonomically active, with species regularly split, redescribed or reassigned as material from little-collected streams is examined. Schistura mahnerti is accepted as a valid species under this combination; older literature and some hobby sources may still list it under Nemacheilus, reflecting the genus's earlier, broader use before Kottelat's revisions narrowed it.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate stone loach, reported at up to roughly 2.5–3 in standard length depending on the source — a genuinely diminutive fish even among stone loaches. As in other Schistura it has a cylindrical, faintly compressed body suited to holding position against current, a subterminal mouth for picking food off the substrate, and barbels around the mouth for probing gravel and stone.
Like other nemacheilids, Schistura mahnerti carries an erectile spine below the eye and effectively lacks visible scales, leaving the skin exposed — a trait shared across the family that has real consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated. Beyond the features noted in available sources, detailed morphological description of this species is sparse; much of what would distinguish it precisely from close relatives rests in the original 1990 description rather than in accessible secondary literature.
Habitat
The species is known from the Salween (Thanlwin) river basin on the Thailand-Myanmar border, where it lives in fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated streams over gravel and stone substrate. This is a lotic, current-loving fish rather than a still-water or backwater species, consistent with the general pattern for Schistura across mainland Southeast Asia.
Water conditions reported for the species are warm-temperate to tropical rather than cold: roughly 73–79 °F, soft (GH 2-9 dH) and mildly acidic to near-neutral (pH 6-6.9). That places it toward the cooler, softer end of what is typical for lowland Southeast Asian streams — flowing hill and foothill water rather than warm, still blackwater — and any aquarium setup should prioritise strong current and high dissolved oxygen over warmth.
Feeding
Schistura mahnerti is a bottom-dwelling micro-predator, foraging over gravel and stone for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar prey typical of fast, clear streams. In the aquarium it has been kept successfully on quality flake food alongside bloodworm, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae.
As with most stone loaches, a diet weighted toward small live and frozen foods will generally produce better condition than dry food alone, since this is a fish adapted to hunting real prey items off the streambed rather than grazing algae or biofilm. Feeding should be aimed at the bottom, where this species spends essentially all of its time.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship or sex differences in Schistura mahnerti; no reliable external dimorphism has been described in the available sources, and this is typical for small, poorly studied stone loaches from single-stream or narrow-range populations. As in other Nemacheilidae, spawning is presumed to follow the general pattern of egg-scattering triggered by conditions in fast-flowing water rather than any pair-bonding or courtship display.
Given how little has been published on this species specifically, keepers should treat any claims about sexing or courtship with caution. The honest position is that this detail simply has not been well documented.
Breeding
Schistura mahnerti follows the typical stone-and-brook-loach pattern: it is an egg-scatterer over gravel and among stones in fast-moving water, with no parental care. Some aquarium breedings have reportedly occurred in Thailand, but details are limited and this is not a species that is reliably or routinely spawned in the hobby.
As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, this species should be approached as one that is rarely bred in captivity — a fish to be enjoyed and observed rather than one to plan a breeding project around. Data on captive spawning triggers, egg development and fry rearing for this species is sparse to the point that little more can be responsibly said.
In the aquarium
Because it is a small, current-adapted stream fish, Schistura mahnerti wants strong flow and high oxygenation above all else — a powerhead or high-turnover filter output, a gravel and stone substrate, and cool-to-moderate tropical temperatures around 73–79 °F rather than a warm, still community tank. Soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral water (pH roughly 6-6.9) matches its native chemistry.
Being near-scaleless like other true loaches, it is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Its small adult size means it does not need a large tank on size grounds alone, but it does need a tank built around current and cover — smooth stones, gravel and open swimming lanes rather than dense planting — and it is best kept as a group rather than singly, in keeping with the general sociability of small benthic loaches.
Conservation
Schistura mahnerti is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (2022), reflecting a presumed stable population across its Salween basin range. As a narrow-range stream endemic restricted to the Thailand-Myanmar border area, however, its status could shift quickly if water quality, flow or habitat in that specific drainage were degraded.
No specific trade or collection pressures are documented in available sources for this species. As with many small stone loaches from a limited native range, the appropriate stance is cautious rather than complacent: a Least Concern rating today does not guarantee resilience if the streams it depends on are altered.
