Taxonomy & naming
Physoschistura rivulicola was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1929. As with many small Southeast Asian nemacheilids described in the early twentieth century, the species has at times been shuffled between the closely related genera that make up the stone-loach complex — Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus, Schistura and Physoschistura have all been used at different points for similar-looking fish as the group was progressively split on the basis of fin-ray counts, lateral-line completeness and other fine anatomical characters. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, currently places this species in Physoschistura, and that combination is used here.
The species belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, by far the largest family of loaches and the one that supplies most of the small, slender "stone" or "brook" loaches of Eurasia's cool, clear streams. Within that family Physoschistura is one of many genera erected to sort a genuinely enormous and still incompletely resolved radiation of similar-looking hillstream fishes across South and Southeast Asia.
Morphology
Physoschistura rivulicola is a small loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2 in standard length — modest even by the standards of the stone loaches. Like other nemacheilids it has an elongate, only moderately compressed body, a small, subterminal mouth suited to picking food from the substrate, and the erectile suborbital spine below the eye that is shared across the wider Cobitoidea, though far less conspicuous than in the larger, more heavily armed botiid loaches.
Documented meristic detail for the species includes 12 dorsal soft rays, 8 anal soft rays and an incomplete lateral line of around 56–57 pores — the kind of fine-grained count that separates it from its many close relatives. As in most nemacheilids the scales are minute and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked; this bears directly on how the species should be handled and medicated in captivity, though it is essentially never seen in the trade.
Habitat
This species is known only from the Salween (Thanlwin) river basin in Myanmar's Southern Shan States, in the eastern hill country of the country. Unusually for a nemacheilid — a family whose members are typically riffle-dwellers of fast, well-oxygenated streams — the available records describe it from a shallow lake habitat with dense aquatic vegetation, rather than open flowing water. It is listed as demersal and confined to fresh water in a broadly tropical setting.
The IUCN assessment notes that within its known range, in the Inle Lake system, the species' habitat has been affected by introduced tilapia, which prey on smaller native fish. Beyond this, published information on the wider distribution, habitat preferences and population trend of Physoschistura rivulicola across the Salween basin is sparse, and its full range in Myanmar (and any extension into neighbouring drainages) is not well documented.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Physoschistura rivulicola has been published, so specifics of its natural diet are not established. Based on its small size, subterminal mouth and the general habits of stone loaches in the genus, it most likely forages over vegetation and soft substrate for small invertebrates — worm and insect-larva prey typical of hillstream and lake-margin nemacheilids — but this should be read as an inference from the wider genus rather than a documented finding for this species specifically.
In the absence of aquarium-trade experience with the species, there is no husbandry-tested feeding regime to report. Data is sparse, and it is more honest to say so than to describe a diet that has not actually been recorded for this fish.
Mating
No information on courtship, sexual dimorphism or spawning behaviour has been published for Physoschistura rivulicola. Stone and brook loaches in general show little external difference between the sexes outside of spawning condition, when females typically appear noticeably rounder with eggs, but this has not been specifically documented for this species.
Given how little is recorded even about its basic ecology, reproductive behaviour for this species is essentially unknown and should not be assumed to follow any particular pattern beyond the broad habits of its family.
Breeding
As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Physoschistura rivulicola is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that provides no parental care, releasing eggs over vegetation or fine substrate rather than guarding a nest or brooding young — the pattern seen throughout the stone and brook loaches. No spawning has been documented in the wild or reproduced in captivity for this species, however, and it is not part of the aquarium trade.
Data on its reproduction is sparse to the point of being essentially absent from the literature; nothing here should be taken as an aquarium care recommendation. The honest summary is that this is a rarely encountered, poorly studied endemic that has never been bred by hobbyists.
In the aquarium
Physoschistura rivulicola is not established in the aquarium hobby, and no dedicated care information exists for it. It does not appear to be collected or traded, and its status as a narrow-range Salween basin endemic — plausibly restricted to a single lake system — makes it an unlikely and inappropriate candidate for casual collection even if it were encountered.
What can be said generally, extrapolated from its close nemacheilid relatives rather than from direct experience with this species, is that stone loaches of this kind are near-scaleless and consequently sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, and that they generally prefer cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated water over still, warm conditions. None of this has been verified for Physoschistura rivulicola specifically, and in the absence of any trade history the responsible position is simply that this fish should be left where it is.
Conservation
Physoschistura rivulicola was assessed by the IUCN in 2010 and listed as Data Deficient. The assessment notes that the species is known from the Salween basin of Myanmar, with records tied to the Inle Lake system, where introduced tilapia are recorded as a pressure on native small fish through predation. The assessors specifically cite a lack of information on the species' full distribution and on threats across the rest of its possible range as the reason for the Data Deficient rating.
This is a common story among the smaller Nemacheilidae: a narrow-range endemic, described a century ago, with no subsequent dedicated survey work to establish whether it remains secure, is declining, or has already been lost from parts of its range. Given the introduced-predator pressure already noted at Inle Lake and the generally poor state of knowledge, a precautionary approach — treating the species as potentially vulnerable until better data exists — is warranted even though the formal listing remains Data Deficient.
