Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by Zhu in 1982, originally placed in the genus Nemachilus and later shuffled through Nemacheilus, Schistura and Physoschistura as the old catch-all "Noemacheilus-group" genera were progressively split apart. Bohlen & Šlechtová erected the genus Pteronemacheilus in 2011 to house it along with a single congener, and the Catalog of Fishes now lists the valid combination as Pteronemacheilus meridionalis (Zhu, 1982) — the parenthetical authority signalling that the species has moved genus since its original description.
It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one whose generic boundaries are still being actively revised as researchers work through Southeast and East Asia's many isolated stream systems. With only two described species, Pteronemacheilus remains one of the family's smaller, less-studied genera. The name Schistura conirostris is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Pteronemacheilus meridionalis is a small, slender nemacheilid reaching only about 2 in in standard length. The body carries a distinctive pattern of 15 to 25 irregular vertical bars, each with a darker edge and a paler centre, running down the flanks — a broken, mottled camouflage well suited to a life spent against gravel and stone. As in other true loaches it is a near-scaleless fish, and where documented in the genus it carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of the family, tucked in a groove beneath the eye.
The clearest sexual signal in the species is structural rather than colour-based: mature males develop a stiff, fan-like expansion along the front pectoral-fin rays, a feature used by researchers to separate the sexes in a group where external dimorphism is otherwise minimal. Beyond size and this fin character, little else about its anatomy has been described in detail.
Habitat
This species is known from rivers and streams of Yunnan Province in southern China, within the Salween and Mekong watersheds, and from the Nam Youan watershed of northern Laos. It inhabits streams and rivers with gravel and stone substrates, sheltering in the crevices between rocks, and has been recorded in both slow- and fast-flowing sections of its home waters.
Beyond that broad habitat description, published water-chemistry data — temperature range, pH, hardness — are not available for this species. That gap is typical for small nemacheilids known from a handful of stream records in southern China and Indochina; the honest position is that its precise physical requirements have not been documented, though a cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated flowing stream is a reasonable inference from its habitat and relatives.
Feeding
No species-specific diet study has been published for Pteronemacheilus meridionalis, but its build and habitat point clearly to the same lifestyle shared by nemacheilid stone loaches generally: a bottom-dwelling micro-predator that works crevices and gravel for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items drifting or hiding in the stream bed.
In the aquarium, fish of this build and habit are best offered small sinking live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates — and sinking micro-pellets or wafers formulated for small bottom feeders; flake floating at the surface is generally ignored by a fish built to forage among stones.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for this species in the wild or in captivity. The one dimorphic clue available is the male's stiffened, expanded pectoral-fin rays, which likely play some role in courtship contact or substrate-gripping during spawning, as similar structures do in related nemacheilids, but the details have not been studied.
Given how little is published on this species generally, any account of pairing behaviour beyond that structural note would be speculation rather than documented fact.
Breeding
There is no record of Pteronemacheilus meridionalis being bred in the aquarium. Stone and brook loaches of this kind are, as a rule, egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward, and this species is presumed to follow that pattern, but it has not been confirmed by direct observation.
As with most Nemacheilidae outside a handful of well-studied genera, captive spawning of this species is essentially undocumented. A keeper should not expect to breed it, and any successful spawning would be a genuinely new data point for the species.
In the aquarium
This is not an established aquarium species, and care information specific to it does not exist in the literature. Given its small size (under 2.5 in), gravel-dwelling habits and origin in flowing Yunnan and northern Lao streams, a keeper attempting it should provide a well-oxygenated tank with moderate-to-strong flow, a substrate of smooth gravel and stones offering crevices to hide in, and cool-to-moderate, clean water rather than a warm, still community setup.
As a near-scaleless nemacheilid it should be treated with the caution due the whole family: sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, and quick to show early signs of ich or other skin parasites, so any treatment should start at reduced dose and be watched closely. Being essentially unknown in the trade, any specimens encountered are very likely wild-collected rather than farmed.
Conservation
Pteronemacheilus meridionalis is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List. That status reflects a genuine lack of data rather than evidence of stability or decline — the species is known from a limited number of stream records across its Yunnan and northern Lao range, and no population trend, abundance estimate or specific threat has been documented in the assessment.
Its habitat lies within the Salween and Mekong drainages, river systems facing widespread pressure across mainland Southeast Asia from damming, water abstraction and land-use change, but no study has tied those pressures specifically to this species. Given the absence of trade records, collecting pressure is not considered a factor; the conservation picture here is simply one of a poorly surveyed stream endemic awaiting more fieldwork.
