Taxonomy & naming
Schistura schultzi was described by Hugh McCormick Smith in 1945. Like many Southeast Asian stone loaches it has passed through several genus placements as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken apart through the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; the species has also been listed historically as Noemacheilus schultzi and Nemacheilus schultzi. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, currently places it in Schistura, the genus that now holds the great majority of mainland Southeast Asia's stone loaches.
The species name honours Leonard Peter Schultz, an American ichthyologist who served as curator of fishes at the US National Museum (Smithsonian Institution) and worked extensively on Southeast Asian freshwater fish collections in the mid-twentieth century.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Schistura schultzi has the family's characteristic build: a small, elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a slightly flattened belly suited to holding station on the streambed, and reduced, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked — a trait shared across nearly all loaches and one with real consequences for how they must be medicated. Like other Schistura it carries an erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive spine housed in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out, a feature that separates true loaches from superficially similar catfish.
Beyond the type description and the confirmation of its valid name in taxonomic databases, no detailed account of its colour pattern, fin structure or precise size has been located in the available sources. It should be assumed to follow the general nemacheilid pattern — a slender, cryptically mottled or barred body suited to camouflage against gravel and stone — but a fuller description is not available from the cache and is not asserted here.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Mekong drainage in Chiang Rai and Loei provinces, northern Thailand, and probably extends into Bokeo province, Laos, on the opposite bank of the same river system. Its type locality is the Doi Hua Mot area of northern Thailand. This places it squarely in the fast, clear, upland and foothill streams typical of the region's stone loaches — cool, well-oxygenated water running over sand, gravel and stone rather than the slow, still, blackwater habitats associated with some other Southeast Asian fish.
Beyond the confirmed locality records, detailed habitat data — substrate composition, canopy cover, seasonal flow variation — has not been published for this species specifically, and none is asserted here beyond what the source records support.
Feeding
No feeding studies specific to Schistura schultzi were found. Based on the well-documented ecology of the genus and family, it should be a benthic micro-predator, working sand, gravel and stone for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — in the way that closely related and better-studied Schistura species are known to do.
In the aquarium, stone loaches of this type are generally omnivorous but favour live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm over dried preparations, and a keeper should expect to feed accordingly and watch that fish are getting enough to eat off the bottom rather than relying on flake alone.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for this species in the wild or in captivity. Nothing published distinguishes males from females externally. Given how little biological data exists for Schistura schultzi at all, this gap is unsurprising rather than an oversight — the FishBase account itself notes that almost nothing is known about its biology.
Breeding
Reproduction has not been recorded in captivity for this species, and no spawning account — wild or aquarium — appears in the available sources. Consistent with the general pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), the expected mode is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care once eggs are released; this is inferred from the family's typical reproductive strategy rather than from direct observation of this species.
Schistura schultzi should be considered essentially unbred in the hobby. It is not established in the aquarium trade, and a prospective keeper should not expect to breed it; the honest picture is that this is a data-sparse stream endemic about which reproduction remains unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Seriously Fish gives a clear care picture even where biology is thin: this is a cool-to-moderate water species, wanting 61–75 °F and pH 6.0–8.0, kept in a setup built around strong, consistent flow rather than still water — powerheads or a filter turning the tank over four to five times an hour are recommended, run over a substrate of variably sized rocks, sand and fine gravel that mimics a real stream bed. A base footprint of at least 120 by 12 in is suggested even for a modest group. Hardy, flow-tolerant plants such as Microsorum, Bolbitis and Anubias, attached to wood or rock rather than planted in substrate, are reported to do well alongside it.
Being near-scaleless like other loaches, it should be treated cautiously with medications and copper-based treatments, dosed conservatively rather than at full aquarium strength. Water quality matters more than usual for a small fish of this size: weekly 30–50% water changes are recommended, reflecting a sensitivity to accumulating organic pollutants that is typical of fast-water stream specialists. It is not currently established in the aquarium trade, so availability should be expected to be limited and inconsistent.
Conservation
Schistura schultzi has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is treated here as Data Deficient pending a proper evaluation — an honest reflection of how little has been published about this species rather than a statement that it is secure. It is known only from a limited area of the Mekong basin straddling northern Thailand and, probably, adjacent Laos, the kind of narrow-range stream endemic that is easily overlooked by broader conservation assessments.
