Schistura spiloptera was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1846, originally as Cobitis spiloptera — the loach family Cobitidae was, at the time, a broad catch-all for almost anything eel-like and bottom-dwelling. Over the following century and a half the species was shuffled through the genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus, part of the general untangling of the old "Nemacheilus" complex as ichthyologists split it into the many genera recognised today. It now sits in Schistura, the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and one of the largest genera among all freshwater fishes, and that placement — per the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names — is what this profile follows.
Nemacheilidae itself is the true stone- or brook-loach family: a huge, mostly small-bodied Eurasian radiation that is easily confused with the superficially similar Balitoridae (hillstream loaches) and Cobitidae (spined loaches) but is distinguished on internal anatomy as much as outward looks.
