Schistura thavonei is a tiny stone loach described only in 2017 from a single tributary of the Mekong in northwestern Laos. It is one of hundreds of Schistura species that make Nemacheilidae the largest loach family — small, elongate, near-scaleless micro-predators that hold station on gravel and stone in cool, fast, oxygen-rich riffles. At barely 2 in, banded in dark brown stripes and bars over a pale ground colour, it is a fish most aquarists will never see: it has no established presence in the trade, no documented aquarium history, and its biology beyond the original description is essentially unrecorded. Data here is honestly sparse, and that sparseness is itself part of the species' story — a freshly discovered stream endemic still being worked out by science.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura thavonei was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2017, part of his long-running work revising the stone-loach faunas of Southeast Asia. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which is by species count the largest of all the loach families and the group into which most of the old, catch-all genus "Nemacheilus" has since been redistributed. Schistura is the largest genus within it, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority followed here for valid names — lists thavonei as a currently accepted species in that genus.

The species epithet honours Mr. Thavone Phommavong, credited in the original description for his role in the fieldwork that produced the type material. As with many recent Schistura descriptions, the species is known essentially only from its type series and the handful of academic notices that followed; no synonyms or historical name changes are recorded for it, since it has never been placed in any other genus.

Morphology

Schistura thavonei is a small, elongate stone loach, reaching only about 2 in in standard length. Like other members of its family it is a near-scaleless fish with an erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye — the defensive spine shared across the Cobitoidea's spined-loach lineages — though the original description emphasises the fish's colour pattern over its spination. The body carries two broad dark brown stripes, one running along the mid-back and one along the mid-flank, separated by a paler yellowish-brown band, with a low hump in profile just behind the head.

Over this striped ground pattern sits a series of twelve to twenty-four short black bars crossing the flanks; the bars become more numerous and tighter-set toward the tail, and the rearmost of them are pushed down onto the lower half of the body, sometimes fusing into blotches along the underside of the caudal peduncle. Fin-ray counts recorded in the description are modest and typical for a small Schistura — around 11–12 dorsal soft rays, 8 anal soft rays, a caudal fin with 8+7 branched rays, and 9–10 total pectoral rays.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Nam Ma, a tributary stream in the Mekong drainage of Louang Namtha Province, in the far northwest of Laos near the borders with China and Myanmar — a hilly, forested part of the upper Mekong basin. It occupies the kind of habitat typical of small Schistura: clear, tropical riffle water flowing over a gravel-to-stone bottom, with fish sheltering in the quieter current at the margins of the main flow rather than fighting the fastest water directly.

As with most single-stream Schistura, there is no dedicated hydrological study of the Nam Ma to give precise temperature or chemistry figures; what can be said with confidence is that this is fast, clear, well-oxygenated, tropical-hill stream water over a hard substrate — not the warm, slow, soft blackwater that suits many other tropical aquarium fish, and not the high-altitude cold water of the Tibetan-plateau Triplophysa either. Louang Namtha sits at moderate elevation, so a cool-leaning tropical stream regime is the best inference available.

Feeding

Schistura thavonei is a benthic micro-predator, in keeping with essentially every member of its genus. The one piece of direct dietary evidence in the original description is a gut-content record from a 1.5 in specimen containing insect larvae, consistent with the pattern seen across small Schistura: picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, and presumably other tiny crustaceans and worms — off and among the gravel and stones of fast-flowing riffles.

No aquarium feeding record exists for this species, but the safe extrapolation from its wild diet and its close relatives is that it would take small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) readily and sinking micro-pellets less readily, and would likely ignore floating flake altogether given its strictly benthic, current-hugging habits.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura thavonei. The species was described from a type series collected in the wild, and there is no record of it having been kept, let alone bred, in captivity. What can be said is inferred from the genus as a whole: small Nemacheilidae in fast water typically pair or gather loosely at spawning time with no elaborate courtship display, releasing eggs directly into the current rather than building any kind of nest or defended site.

Given the total absence of species-specific observation, any detail beyond that generic pattern would be guesswork, and none is offered here.

Breeding

As is typical for stone and brook loaches, Schistura thavonei is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that broadcasts eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the standard reproductive mode across Nemacheilidae. No aquarium spawning has been documented for this species, and given how recently it was described (2017) and how narrow its known range is, it appears never to have entered the hobby in numbers sufficient to generate breeding reports.

This is an honest gap rather than an oversight: for the great majority of small-stream Schistura, captive breeding has simply never been attempted or recorded, and thavonei is no exception. Anyone encountering wild-collected stock should expect to keep it, not to breed it.

In the aquarium

Schistura thavonei has no meaningful aquarium history — it is not established in the trade, and no husbandry account beyond the taxonomic description appears to exist. Anything offered here is inference from its close relatives and habitat rather than direct experience with this species, and should be treated as a starting point, not a verified protocol.

Were it to be kept, the fish's biology points clearly toward a cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated setup: strong water movement, a gravel-and-stone substrate, and clean, well-filtered water rather than a warm, still, densely planted tank. Like other members of its family it is near-scaleless and should be presumed sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, warranting the same caution — half-doses and gentle products — used with better-known loaches. At under 2 in it is a small fish, but Schistura in general tend to do best in a group rather than alone, so a modest shoal in a stream-style tank would be the sensible approach if specimens were ever available. Given the total lack of trade presence, this is a species for the record rather than the shopping list.

Conservation

Schistura thavonei has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; there is no assessment, category, or year to report, so it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. It is known from a single tributary stream in Louang Namtha Province, Laos, which by itself is a marker of vulnerability common to many recently described Nemacheilidae — narrow-range, single-locality stream endemics that have simply not yet been assessed by conservation bodies, whatever their true wild status turns out to be.

There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure from the hobby is not a documented concern. The more relevant risks, as with most small stream fish in this part of the Mekong basin, would be habitat-scale pressures — deforestation, water diversion, and land-use change in the streams of northern Laos — though no specific study of these pressures on this species has been published.
