Taxonomy & naming
Schistura tubulinaris was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1998, part of his long-running revision of the stone loaches of the Mekong basin and neighbouring Indochinese drainages. It sits in the genus Schistura, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and one that has absorbed many species once placed in the older, now largely defunct catch-all genus Nemacheilus (sometimes spelled Noemacheilus in older literature). No record of the species under that older combination could be confirmed here, which is consistent with it having been named directly into Schistura rather than transferred from an earlier genus.
The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name, and it recognises Schistura as the current, correct genus for this species. Nemacheilidae itself was only split out from the broader loach superfamily Cobitoidea in the last few decades, and the internal boundaries between Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and their relatives continue to be revised as more Southeast Asian streams are surveyed — a reminder that the taxonomy of this group is still actively settling.
Morphology
Like the rest of its genus, Schistura tubulinaris is a slender, elongate, bottom-hugging loach built for holding position in current rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2.5 in standard length, with fish maturing from roughly 2 in — a genuinely small species even by the modest standards of the stone loaches. Schistura tubulinaris is carnivorous, and FishBase specifically notes arthropod remains in gut contents — consistent with the genus-wide pattern of small benthic micro-predators picking insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates off gravel and sand in flowing water.
