Taxonomy & naming
Sewellia albisuera was formally described by the German ichthyologist Jörg Freyhof in 2003, based on specimens collected from the River Thu Bon in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, in 1999 and 2000. The description appeared in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, volume 14, number 3. The type series displayed some variation in dorsal patterning, but Freyhof judged this insufficient to warrant separation into multiple taxa.
The genus Sewellia belongs to the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches), a group of strongly dorsoventrally flattened cypriniform fishes adapted to life on rocky substrate in fast, well-oxygenated streams. The species epithet albisuera is Latin, combining albus (white) with suera (a reference to the pale reticulated pattern on the dorsal surface that distinguishes it from its congeners). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Sewellia albisuera Freyhof, 2003 as the valid combination; no synonyms have been published. The name Parasewellia tetralobata is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Sewellia albisuera is a small, strongly flattened loach reaching approximately 2.5–3 in standard length (around 2.5 in). The body is depressed dorsoventrally and broadest at the pectoral girdle, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle — the classic hillstream shape that allows the fish to press flat against rock in fast current. The paired pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and extended horizontally, forming the adhesion surface that substitutes for a true sucker disc; they function together to keep the fish anchored in torrential flow. The pelvic fin has 20–21 branched rays, a diagnostic character noted in the original description. The lateral line carries 49–54 plus 2 scales.
The dorsal surface is marked with a whitish reticulated or spotted pattern on the head and body, giving the species its epithet; a faint dark grey lateral stripe runs along the flank. This pale-on-dark reticulation distinguishes S. albisuera from other Sewellia species in the same drainage. Like all balitorid hillstream loaches the skin carries very small, deeply embedded scales, leaving it nearly scaleless to the touch and sensitive to copper and other chemical treatments. There is no erectile suborbital spine as seen in botiids — Balitoridae and Cobitidae are separate families within Cobitoidea.
Habitat
Sewellia albisuera is known only from the River Thu Bon system, Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, draining the eastern flanks of the Annamite Range toward the South China Sea. Its habitat is fast, rocky stream sections — rapids and riffles with a substrate of exposed bedrock, cobble and gravel swept clear of silt by the current. The water is cool, highly oxygenated and clear, characteristic of upland Annamite streams fed by montane catchments.
The species is a rheophile: it lives on the surface of stones in the fastest, most oxygen-saturated parts of the channel, where it would be swept away without the flattened adhesive body plan. Still or slow water is essentially uninhabitable for it. Water temperatures across the Thu Bon uplands run cool — Seriously Fish notes a range of 64–75 °F as appropriate in captivity, reflecting the cool to mild temperatures of the Annamite highland streams — with a pH of around 6.0–7.5 and very low dissolved solids. Seasonal flow variation is driven by the central Vietnamese monsoon.
Feeding
Sewellia albisuera feeds in the manner characteristic of hillstream loaches: it rasps aufwuchs — the community of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, protists and associated organic detritus — from the surface of rocks in fast current. This biofilm grazing is the dietary mainstay, supplemented opportunistically by small invertebrates carried in the current or found among the stones.
In captivity it requires a tank with a mature, biofilm-covered rockscape; a newly set up or bare aquarium offers no food base, and the fish will starve even if fed commercially. Appropriate supplementary foods include gelatin-bound vegetable preparations, Spirulina wafers and blanched soft greens such as spinach or courgette. Small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia or Artemia nauplii are accepted when offered. It is emphatically not a general algae eater capable of subsisting on flake or pellet food alone; the tank must be mature and the feeding approach must accommodate the species' specialised, grazing nature.
Mating
Little is known about the reproductive biology of Sewellia albisuera in the wild, given the scarcity of collected material. What is documented for the genus — primarily from the more commonly kept Sewellia lineolata — indicates that males court females with prominent pectoral-fin fluttering displays, a conspicuous behaviour in which the large, horizontally oriented pectoral fins are fanned rapidly. Seriously Fish notes this pattern for Sewellia and suggests it applies across the genus.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Females in condition are noticeably fuller-bodied than males. In some Sewellia species males may show slight differences in head or fin shape, but distinguishing sexes in S. albisuera specifically remains data-sparse. In the wild, spawning is likely tied to the seasonal rise and cooling of streams after monsoonal rainfall — the standard trigger for rheophilic loaches in the Annamite drainage.
Breeding
Based on what is known of the genus, Sewellia albisuera is an egg-scatterer that deposits eggs among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care. Seriously Fish documents that Sewellia can be triggered to spawn in a mature, strongly flowing river tank: a period of slightly elevated temperature (around 77–79 °F) followed by a cool water change mimics monsoonal conditions and can induce courtship and spawning. Pairs embrace in the water column, releasing a small number of eggs that fall among the substrate interstices. Fry are tiny and require infusoria followed by Artemia nauplii and microworms.
However, S. albisuera is critically endangered and very rarely encountered in the trade. Any aquarium specimens should be treated as conservation animals, not hobby breeding projects. The species is not commercially bred; its occurrence in aquaria traces to limited wild collection, and given its IUCN status, further collection is a documented threat. For the small number of keepers who hold specimens, the breeding approach documented for the genus offers a plausible framework, but honest records of successful spawning of this species specifically are absent from the available literature.
In the aquarium
Sewellia albisuera is a highly specialised fish that demands conditions closely matching its native habitat or it will decline quickly. The non-negotiable requirements are cool water (64–75 °F), very high dissolved oxygen, and powerful directional flow — Seriously Fish recommends a turnover rate of 15–20 times the tank volume per hour, achieved with a strong powerhead directed across a rockscape. A standard tropical community tank is unsuitable: warm, slow-moving, under-oxygenated water will kill this species within weeks through a combination of suffocation and immune collapse.
The tank must be mature, with extensive biofilm and algae established on rocks and glass before fish are introduced — without this food source the fish will starve regardless of supplementary feeding. A minimum base footprint of 90 × 12 in is suggested. A group of six or more is preferable; lone specimens or pairs show stress and are more likely to fade. Water should be soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5). Because the skin is very fine and the fish has no effective scaleless-sensitivity in the manner of botiids (it lacks the botiid spine and scalelessness scale), standard aquarium treatments at half-dose are the appropriate caution with any medication, and copper-based products should be avoided entirely. This is not a beginner fish, and the species' critical conservation status means that any keeper acquiring specimens bears an unusual responsibility for their welfare.
Conservation
Sewellia albisuera is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (2010 assessment, criteria A2c+3c; B1b(i,ii)), with a projected population decline exceeding 80 per cent over the decade from roughly 2000 to 2009. The species is endemic to the River Thu Bon drainage in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam — a single river system — which makes it exceptionally vulnerable to any localised threat.
The IUCN assessment identifies two principal drivers of decline: dam construction along the Thu Bon and its tributaries, which alters flow regime, raises water temperature, smothers rocky substrate with sediment and fragments the river system; and collection for the aquarium trade, which has removed individuals from an already small and geographically restricted population. Central Vietnam's Annamite streams have seen considerable hydropower development in recent decades, and the Thu Bon catchment is no exception. Given the species' narrow endemic range, complete dependence on fast, clear, cool, rocky stream habitat, and the documented pressures on that habitat, its outlook in the absence of effective watershed protection is poor. There is no evidence of captive breeding in numbers sufficient to reduce pressure on wild populations.
