Sewellia lineolata, the reticulated hillstream loach, is a flattened, torpedo-bodied fish from the fast hill streams of central Vietnam that has earned a devoted following in the aquarium hobby for its striking reticulated markings and its outright bizarre physique. Its entire ventral surface acts as a sucker, locking it to smooth rock in torrential water where few other fish could hold on. It is a cool, highly-oxygenated-water specialist that grazes biofilm from rock surfaces and is among the most commonly killed hillstream loaches by the single error of placing it in a warm, still, bare tank — which starves and suffocates it in weeks. In a mature, strongly-flowing river tank with algae-covered stone it is hardy, active and one of the very few hillstream loaches with a realistic record of aquarium spawning.

Taxonomy & naming

Sewellia lineolata was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1846, with the type locality given as 'Cochinchine' — a historical French designation for what is now southern Vietnam, though the species is now known to occur principally in the central provinces. The parentheses around Valenciennes' name signal that he did not originally place the fish in the genus Sewellia; the current combination was established later when the genus was described to accommodate this and related Vietnamese hillstream species.

The genus Sewellia belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream or torrent loaches — a group of flattened rheophilic fishes found across South and Southeast Asia. Within the Balitoridae, Sewellia is placed in the subfamily Balitorinae alongside Balitora, Homaloptera, Gastromyzon and their relatives. The genus is endemic to Vietnam and Laos, with several species described from the Annamite mountain ranges.

The species epithet lineolata comes from the Latin lineola (a small line, diminutive of linea), referring to the fine longitudinal striping on the flanks. In the trade the species is most consistently called the reticulated hillstream loach, a nod to the complex network of lines and spots covering the head and body. The name Sewellia songboensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Sewellia lineolata is built entirely for life in rushing water. The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with the head and trunk forming a broad, streamlined disc and the paired fins swept wide and low. The entire ventral surface — the flattened belly, the broad pectoral and pelvic fins, and the modified skin between them — works as a suction pad, allowing the fish to cling to smooth bedrock in flows strong enough to sweep away almost anything else.

Adults reach about 2–2.5 in in total length. The colour is striking: the flanks carry three to five bold dark longitudinal stripes on a pale buff to golden ground, and the head, body and all fins are overlaid with a fine reticulation of dark lines and small spots. Mature males typically show more intense colouration and develop small tubercles (breeding tubercles) on the snout and the leading edge of the pectoral fins during breeding condition; females are larger-bodied when ripe.

Like other balitorid loaches, Sewellia lineolata is effectively scaleless — the skin is smooth or bears only minute, deeply-embedded scales — which makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and to sharp changes in water chemistry. There is no suborbital spine, which distinguishes it from the botiid loaches; balitorids are not spined in the same way.

Habitat

In the wild, Sewellia lineolata inhabits shallow, fast-flowing hill streams and headwater tributaries in the provinces of Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh in central Vietnam — the eastern slopes of the Annamite mountain range draining into the South China Sea. These are clear, clean streams with substrates of bedrock, cobble and gravel, broken by riffles and short pools, at elevations that keep water temperatures distinctly cool relative to the lowland tropics.

The water in these streams is well-oxygenated to the point of near-saturation, fast-moving, and typically soft and slightly acidic. The rocks are colonised by a thick biofilm of algae, diatoms, and organic debris — the primary food source for Sewellia and its hillstream relatives. There is no seasonal flooding cycle of the kind that triggers botiid breeding migrations; these are perennial fast-water habitats that shift in volume with rainfall rather than undergoing dramatic inundation.

This is emphatically not a warm, still, lowland environment. The combination of cool temperature, ferocious current and high dissolved oxygen defines the ecological niche of Sewellia lineolata, and replicating all three is non-negotiable for keeping it alive.

Feeding

Sewellia lineolata is an aufwuchs grazer — its natural diet consists almost entirely of the biofilm that coats rock surfaces in fast hill streams: algae, diatoms, bacteria, fungi, protists, and the minute organic particles trapped within that film. In the wild it rasps this layer from bedrock and cobble using a specialised, fleshy, subterminal mouth adapted for suction-feeding on hard surfaces.

In the aquarium, this dietary biology is the single most important thing to understand. A newly set-up tank has no biofilm, and a Sewellia placed in it will starve even if it is being offered food, because it has not yet learned to graze from surfaces it cannot recognise as food. The tank must be mature — at minimum a few months old with visible algae growth on rocks and glass — before the fish is added. Once established, the diet should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, blanched courgette and cucumber, spirulina-based pellets, and vegetable-based foods placed directly on rocks. Small frozen foods such as Daphnia and bloodworm are taken and help maintain condition.

Feeding this species is not difficult once the tank is properly set up, but it is unforgiving of the mistake of placing it in a clean, bare, algae-free aquarium — an error that accounts for a large proportion of early deaths in new keepers.

Mating

Sexing Sewellia lineolata is possible with close observation. Females are appreciably larger and broader across the body when in spawning condition. Males are slimmer and, when ripe, develop prominent tubercles (nuptial tubercles) on the snout and on the leading rays of the pectoral fins — a tactile display feature associated with courtship in many hillstream loaches. The differences become clear in a group of healthy, well-conditioned fish but may be subtle or absent in newly acquired fish or those in poor condition.

Courtship involves the male positioning himself alongside the female and clasping her with his pectoral fins — a behaviour documented both in the wild and in aquarium spawnings. This mating posture is characteristic of balitorid hillstream loaches. A temperature drop of 36–37 °F from the upper end of the acceptable range, combined with a period of highly nutritious feeding and strong water flow, appears to be the most reliable trigger for bringing fish into breeding condition in captivity.

Breeding

Sewellia lineolata is one of a small number of hillstream loaches with a genuine record of aquarium spawning — unusual in this group, where most species are essentially never bred outside of specialist facilities. Spawning has been documented in mature, strongly-flowing river-tank setups where fish are kept in groups and the tank is well-established enough to carry a thick biofilm and algae cover.

The eggs are dropped or pressed onto flat rock surfaces, smooth substrate, or the glass walls in areas of moderate to strong flow. No parental care follows: the adults scatter the eggs and take no further interest. Eggs are small and transparent, and the fry, once they hatch and absorb their yolk sacs, must immediately find biofilm to graze or they will not survive. Raising fry in the aquarium is therefore conditional on having surfaces covered with established biofilm — the same requirement as for the adults, only more critical.

The trade in Sewellia lineolata is supplied primarily by wild-caught fish from Vietnamese streams rather than by captive breeding at commercial scale. Aquarium spawnings remain uncommon and raising fry to adulthood in captivity is a genuine challenge; those who have succeeded report it requires patience, a very mature high-flow system, and careful attention to the first feeding stage.

In the aquarium

A river-tank setup is not optional for Sewellia lineolata — it is the basic requirement. The filtration should turn over the aquarium volume ten to fifteen times per hour, directed to produce a strong, laminar current across a rockscape of smooth cobbles and flat stones. A powerhead or a dedicated in-tank circulation pump aimed along the length of the tank, supplemented by robust mechanical and biological filtration, is the standard approach. The aquarium must be mature: at minimum several months old, with visible algae and biofilm established across the rocks before the fish are introduced.

Temperature should be kept in the range of 68–75 °F — cooler than a typical tropical community tank. This is not negotiable: warm, oxygen-depleted water is as lethal to Sewellia as a bare tank. Dissolved oxygen must be high, which a strong surface agitation at these temperatures will ensure. Water chemistry is flexible within soft, slightly acidic to neutral parameters (pH 6.0–7.5), but water quality must be excellent; these fish come from streams clean enough to support biofilm grazing and are intolerant of elevated nitrate.

Sewellia lineolata is a social fish and should be kept in groups of five or more; a single individual, or a pair, shows more stress and less natural behaviour than a proper group. An aquarium of 31.5 in or more in length is the practical minimum. The species is entirely peaceful with tankmates that can tolerate the same cool, fast-water conditions — danios, hillstream gobies, and other cool-water species work well. Avoid combining it with warm-water tropical fish, not from any aggression concern but because the thermal requirements are genuinely incompatible.

Being effectively scaleless, Sewellia is sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength dosing of many medications. If disease arises, use treatments at half-dose or less and prefer copper-free formulations. The species is generally hardy in a correctly-set-up tank and, once established on a biofilm-rich rockscape with supplemental feeding, can be long-lived and active.

Conservation

Sewellia lineolata is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the population trend recorded as declining. The assessment reflects two converging pressures on the species' narrow range in the hill streams of central Vietnam: overexploitation for the ornamental fish trade, and habitat degradation from dam construction and siltation caused by deforestation across the Annamite catchments.

The species is endemic to a geographically restricted set of drainages in the central Vietnamese provinces and has no meaningful distribution outside this zone. Dam construction fragments stream connectivity and alters the flow regimes on which rheophilic species depend; siltation smothers the bedrock and cobble substrates that carry the biofilm these fish graze on. Both stressors operate at a landscape scale that makes recovery contingent on watershed-level conservation rather than site-by-site management.

The aquarium trade draws almost entirely on wild-caught fish, with no significant captive-breeding supply to offset collection pressure. Given the Vulnerable assessment and the documented population decline, keepers of this species should source fish only from reputable suppliers with transparent supply chains, maintain groups long-term rather than cycling through replacement fish, and support any captive-breeding efforts that may reduce ongoing wild collection.
