Sewellia diardi is a hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae described by Tyson Roberts in 1998 from fast, clear streams of the Se Kong watershed in Laos, a Mekong tributary draining the Annamite highlands. It is the larger-growing representative of the genus, placed by Roberts in the subgenus Diardichthys and named in honour of the French naturalist Pierre-Médard Diard. Like all hillstream loaches it has a flattened, streamlined body designed for clinging to exposed rock in torrential water, grazing biofilm and diatoms from the stone surface. Data on wild populations remain sparse, and the species is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Sewellia diardi was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1998 in a systematic revision of the balitorid loach genus Sewellia of Vietnam and Laos, published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (46(2): 271–288). Roberts erected the subgenus Diardichthys for the larger-growing species he was separating from the smaller, more slender Sewellia sensu stricto, and placed S. diardi within it. The subgenus name is now treated as synonymous with Sewellia s.s. by the Catalog of Fishes, and the species is listed simply as Sewellia diardi Roberts, 1998.

The genus Sewellia belongs to the family Balitoridae within the superfamily Cobitoidea — the broad assemblage of Old World loaches that also includes the botiid, nemacheilid and cobitid families. Balitoridae are the hillstream loaches proper: rheophilic, torrent-adapted fishes of fast hill streams across South and Southeast Asia. Sewellia is an exclusively Indochinese genus, with the species distributed across river systems draining the Annamite range between Vietnam and Laos.

Morphology

Sewellia diardi is a medium-sized hillstream loach reaching approximately 3 in standard length — somewhat larger than the more familiar Sewellia lineolata — and represents the larger end of the genus. Like all Sewellia it has a strongly flattened body and broad, horizontally-spread paired fins that together form a near-continuous disc on the ventral surface. This disc functions as a suction organ, allowing the fish to press tightly against exposed rock and resist the pull of fast current. The dorsal surface typically carries a patterned arrangement of spots and reticulations, though specific colour pattern details for S. diardi from the literature are sparse.

The skin carries very small, deeply embedded scales, giving it a nearly naked appearance and a smooth texture. As in other balitorids there is a sharp, erectile suborbital spine beneath each eye — a defensive structure that can catch in nets and cause small injuries to handlers. The mouth is ventral and adapted for scraping biofilm from hard substrates, with fleshy lips and a rasping dentition suited to grazing rather than pursuit predation.

Habitat

The type locality of Sewellia diardi is a fast, clear stream within the Se Kong watershed in Laos, a major left-bank tributary of the Mekong draining the eastern slopes of the Annamite mountain range. These highland streams are characteristically cold to cool, well-oxygenated, low in dissolved organic matter, and flow over bedrock, boulders and cobble with very little fine sediment in the main channel. The current in such environments is strong and the water remains saturated with dissolved oxygen year-round.

This is a strictly rheophilic specialist: its flattened body form and ventral disc are adaptations to fast water, not still or sluggish environments. The species is endemic to the Se Kong drainage and has not been recorded from other river systems, making it a narrow Laotian endemic with a geographically restricted range. Given the altitude and geography of the Annamite headwater streams, water temperatures are likely cooler than in lowland tropical rivers — congeners from comparable habitats in Vietnam prefer 68–75 °F.

Feeding

Sewellia diardi is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. In its native torrents it scrapes algae, diatoms, periphyton and associated micro-invertebrates from the surfaces of exposed boulders and bedrock, using its ventral mouth and fleshy, papillated lips. This diet is tied intimately to the rocky, fast-water habitat: the same current that aerates the water and keeps the substrate clean also continuously delivers nutrients and supports a rich growth of epilithic algae and biofilm. In the absence of that substrate, the fish has nothing to eat.

In an aquarium this means that Sewellia diardi — like all hillstream loaches — will starve in a bare or newly-established tank that lacks a mature coat of algae and biofilm on rock surfaces. The staple is not flake food or standard pellets; it is the living film on the stone. Supplemental feeding with blanched greens (courgette, cucumber, spinach), algae wafers, Spirulina-based foods, and small frozen invertebrates such as daphnia or baby brine shrimp rounds out the diet, but an algae-coated rock surface in high-flow conditions must come first.

Mating

Direct information on mating behaviour in Sewellia diardi is absent from the available literature. Inference from the genus and family points to a paired or group spawning event in which ripe fish release eggs into moving water or deposit them among stones and gravel. The congener Sewellia elongata, which belongs to the same subgenus Diardichthys, has been reported to spawn as a pair in the water column, releasing eggs into the current — a mode that appears plausible for S. diardi given the shared morphology, subgenus affiliation and similar torrent habitat.

Sexual dimorphism in Sewellia is subtle. Mature females are typically broader across the body when in spawning condition, and may show a slightly rounder abdominal profile when viewed from above; males can develop small tubercles on the snout or cheek in breeding condition. Without a breeding population in captivity these differences are difficult to assess reliably for S. diardi specifically.

Breeding

Sewellia diardi has not been documented as bred in home aquaria, and data on its reproductive biology in the wild are sparse. It is an egg-scattering hillstream loach: the mode implied by the genus and family is a scatter of small adhesive eggs among stones or gravel in fast, well-oxygenated water, with no parental care after spawning. This pattern, observed in the better-studied Sewellia lineolata and consistent with the congener S. elongata, is the most reasonable inference for S. diardi.

A mature, strongly-flowing river tank with an established biofilm on rocks, cooler temperatures and high oxygen levels provides the conditions most likely to encourage spawning behaviour in Sewellia species. Even so, fry survival is a separate challenge — the eggs and newly-hatched larvae require food at a microscopic scale and strong current, conditions difficult to replicate and manage. Keepers should not expect to breed S. diardi and should treat any spawning as a bonus rather than a routine outcome.

In the aquarium

Sewellia diardi is an uncommon fish in the aquarium trade, and its care requirements are more demanding than most fish sold as "algae eaters." The foundation is water movement: a turnover rate of at least 10–15 times the tank volume per hour, and preferably 15–20×, with a powerhead or circulation pump directed across a rock and slate arrangement. This is not optional — without fast, aerated, oxygen-rich water the fish suffocates and deteriorates. The tank must also be established well in advance of introduction so that a thick coat of biofilm and algae can develop on the rocks; a bare tank is a slow starvation sentence.

Temperature should be kept cool, in the range of 68–75 °F, matching the cool highland stream water of the Annamite headwaters. This rules out the standard warm community aquarium (79–82 °F). Sewellia species are social and do better in groups of six or more; solitary specimens are more stressed and less active. The near-scaleless skin absorbs medications rapidly and makes the fish sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-dose formalin or organophosphate products — use half-doses and copper-free medications, and quarantine new fish carefully. Given all of this, S. diardi is a fish for experienced keepers who are willing to set up a dedicated high-flow stream biotope.

Conservation

Sewellia diardi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The designation reflects the reality that almost nothing is known about its population size, range extent, or the trajectory of those populations over time. The species is known from the Se Kong watershed in Laos and has not been recorded elsewhere; as a narrow endemic of a single Mekong sub-drainage it is inherently vulnerable to any hydrological changes in that basin.

The Se Kong and its tributaries in the Annamite highlands face pressure from hydropower development — multiple dams have been built or planned along the main channel and its tributaries in Laos — as well as from water extraction, land clearance on steep slopes, and the sedimentation that follows forest removal. Any of these changes alters or destroys the fast, clear, bedrock-stream habitat that Sewellia diardi requires. Given the combination of narrow endemism, specialised habitat, and active basin-level development, the conservation outlook for this species merits attention even without a formal threat assessment. Where it enters the ornamental trade it is almost certainly wild-collected, as commercial captive breeding of this genus is not established at scale.
