Taxonomy & naming
The species was described in 2016 by Deng, Wen, Xiao & Zhu, originally placed in the genus Oreonectes as Oreonectes daqikongensis, based on a holotype (CNGZNU20110128001) collected from the subterranean river of Yaoshui Cave in the Daqikong area. Later phylogenetic work supported moving it into Troglonectes, a genus erected for a monophyletic group of about 19 obligate cave-dwelling and cave-associated nemacheilid loaches from southern China; the Catalog of Fishes now lists the valid combination as Troglonectes daqikongensis.
It sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loach family — by far the largest family of true loaches, with well over a thousand described species across Eurasia. Mitochondrial genome sequencing places T. daqikongensis phylogenetically closer to Oreonectes shuilongensis than to the high-altitude Triplophysa loaches of the Tibetan plateau, consistent with a lowland karst origin rather than a plateau one. At least one close congener, T. hechiensis, remains surface-dwelling, underscoring that cave adaptation within this group is a relatively recent, localized event rather than an ancestral trait of the whole genus.
Morphology
Troglonectes daqikongensis is a small, slender nemacheilid loach; the holotype measured 3 in in total length and 2.5 in standard length. Its most striking feature is troglomorphy: the body is pale pink and largely translucent, with reduced pigmentation that leaves the vertebral column, internal organs and other soft-tissue structures visible even under ordinary laboratory lighting. This loss of pigment, along with presumed reduction of the eyes typical of cave nemacheilids, reflects a life spent entirely without light in the Yaoshui Cave system.
As a nemacheilid it shares the family's general stone-loach build — a cylindrical, elongated body suited to holding position in flowing water — and, in keeping with the broader loach group, an erectile suborbital spine and a skin that is functionally near-scaleless. Species-specific detail on fin structure, barbel count and other diagnostic characters is best sought in the original description rather than assumed from relatives, since the cache consulted for this profile does not provide it.
Habitat
This is an obligate cave species, known only from Yaoshui Cave in the Daqikong karst area of Libo County, Guizhou Province, China (roughly 25°17'N, 107°45'E, at about 1601 ft elevation). It lives in the clear, subterranean water of an underground river connected to the wider Dagou river system via underground passages — a habitat of minimal to no light, stable temperature, and presumably low nutrient input compared with surface streams.
The water itself is cool, clear and flowing, consistent with the general Nemacheilidae preference for well-oxygenated stream conditions rather than still or stagnant water. Feeding
No species-specific dietary study of Troglonectes daqikongensis was found in the sources reviewed. By family pattern, Nemacheilidae are benthic micro-predators that forage over stream substrate for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans — and cave nemacheilids are generally presumed to feed on whatever invertebrate life and organic input reaches the underground water column, likely a sparser resource base than a surface stream offers.

Where general Nemacheilidae husbandry guidance is relevant at all, brook and hillstream-type loaches in this family are typically kept in cool, well-oxygenated, flowing water with biofilm-covered surfaces and ample cover, and like other loaches they are near-scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications. None of this has been tested on T. daqikongensis itself, and given its total dependence on a single subterranean habitat, it should not be regarded as a candidate for the trade.
Conservation
Troglonectes daqikongensis is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, reflecting what the assessment describes as a stable population within its protected cave system. Even so, the species' entire known range is a single cave — Yaoshui Cave in the Daqikong karst area of Libo County — which makes it inherently vulnerable to any localized disturbance of water quality, hydrology or cave access, regardless of its current Red List category.
The species is of no relevance to the aquarium trade and faces no collection pressure; its conservation concerns, to the extent they exist, would center on karst groundwater quality and cave-system integrity in this part of Guizhou Province rather than on fishery or ornamental exploitation.
