Troglonectes hechiensis is a small, troglomorphic stone loach described only in 2021 from a single cave and spring-stream system near Hechi, in Guangxi Province, southern China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the group that supplies most of the hobby's small "stone" or "brook" loaches — bold benthic micro-predators of cool, clear, fast-flowing water. As a species named only a few years ago from one localized site, it is genuinely data-sparse: no aquarium history, no population assessment and no confirmed breeding record exist in the literature, and this article says so honestly rather than filling the gaps with guesswork.

Taxonomy & naming

Troglonectes hechiensis was formally described in 2021 by Zhao, Liu, Du and Luo, published in the peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys. The species epithet hechiensis refers to Hechi, the prefecture-level city in Guangxi Province, southern China, near which the type locality lies. It sits in the genus Troglonectes, a group of small nemacheilid loaches associated with karst cave systems and spring-fed streams in southern China and adjacent parts of Southeast Asia, several of which show troglomorphic (cave-adapted) features.

The genus belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family — the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, comprising hundreds of small, mostly benthic species distributed across Eurasia. As a very recent description, Troglonectes hechiensis has not yet accumulated the kind of secondary literature, hobbyist records or synonymy history seen in older, more widespread loach species; almost everything known about it traces back to the original description.

Morphology

Troglonectes hechiensis is a small nemacheilid loach, and like other members of its genus it shows a troglomorphic body plan associated with a cave or spring-fed karst habitat — features often include reduced pigmentation and eyes that are smaller than in surface-dwelling relatives, adaptations to the low-light conditions of subterranean or spring-cave waters. As in other true loaches, the body is slender, cylindrical and near-scaleless, and it likely carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of Nemacheilidae, a small bony spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye that the fish can flick out defensively.

Habitat
