Taxonomy & naming
The species was formally described in 2016 by Deng, Xiao, Hou & Zhou in Zootaxa, originally as Oreonectes shuilongensis, based on specimens from a cave-associated stream near Shuilong Township. Subsequent taxonomic work on the Oreonectes-Troglonectes complex has placed it in Troglonectes, the genus name now used here; some databases and older citations still carry it under the original Oreonectes combination, so both names can be found in the literature. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, whose species-level taxonomy in southern China has been extensively reshuffled over the past two decades as cave and karst populations have been described and re-examined genetically.
Troglonectes shuilongensis is one of roughly seventeen currently recognized species in the genus, most of them narrow-range endemics from the limestone karst country of Guizhou and neighboring provinces. Comparative work on the genus has treated it alongside close relatives such as T. hechiensis, with which it shares diagnostic features of the caudal fin. The holotype and paratypes are held at a Chinese research institution (GNUG); no subspecies or trade synonyms are known.
Morphology
Troglonectes shuilongensis is a small, elongate nemacheilid with a scaleless body, a feature shared across the genus and typical of cave-dwelling stone loaches. It has a complete lateral line running the length of the body and, distinctively among its close relatives, a concave caudal fin margin — a trait it shares with T. hechiensis but that separates both from other regional congeners. Unlike many showier aquarium loaches it carries no notable color pattern; described specimens are essentially uniform and pale, consistent with a life spent in low-light cave-stream habitat.
Precise size data were not available in the sources consulted for this profile. Stone loaches in this family typically run from about 1–4.5 in in standard length, and Troglonectes species are generally small, slender fish at the lower end of that range; this should be read as a family-level expectation rather than a measured figure for this species. Habitat
The species is known only from its type locality: an unnamed stream in the Liujiang River basin near Shuilong Township, Sandu County, in Guizhou Province, southwestern China (25°50′44.4″ N, 107°52′54.3″ E). This is limestone karst country, and the stream sits within a cave-associated system typical of the region's troglomorphic loach fauna. No other populations or localities have been reported for this species in the sources reviewed here.
Expected habitat conditions follow the pattern for Troglonectes generally: clear, cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water running over rock and gravel in unpolluted limestone streams, often within or immediately connected to cave systems. Precise temperature and water-chemistry data for this exact site were not found; as a cave-stream endemic from a moderate-elevation part of Guizhou, cool flowing water rather than warm still water is the reasonable expectation, but this profile does not assert measured figures beyond what is documented.
Feeding

It is known from a single unnamed stream in Sandu County, Guizhou — a range about as narrow as a freshwater fish can have — which by itself signals high vulnerability to any local disturbance, even without a formal assessment assigning a threat category.
Cave and karst-stream endemics of this kind face pressures typical of the region: water pollution, groundwater extraction, quarrying and habitat modification in limestone catchments, and the general fragility that comes with a single known population. No trade or collection pressure has been documented for this species, and it does not appear to be part of the aquarium trade. Given its Not Evaluated status and single-locality distribution, further field survey and a formal Red List assessment would be valuable.
