Turcinoemacheilus hafezi is a small, little-known stone loach endemic to the Karoun and Dez River drainages of southwestern Iran, in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that holds the true "stone" or "brook" loaches — slender, near-scaleless micro-predators that live out their lives hugging the gravel of cool, clear, fast-flowing streams. Barely reaching 3 in, it is a modest fish by any measure, and much of its biology remains sparsely documented: a handful of taxonomic and life-history papers from Iranian ichthyologists are essentially the whole record. It has never been assessed by the IUCN and is effectively unknown outside specialist circles, but the little that has been published — a spring spawning season, a diet of small invertebrates, a life confined to swift, oxygen-rich water — fits the pattern of its family precisely.

Taxonomy & naming

Turcinoemacheilus hafezi was formally described in 2013 by Golzarianpour, Abdoli, Patimar and Freyhof, placing it in the genus Turcinoemacheilus — a small group of stone loaches erected for species from Iran, Iraq and Turkey that were previously folded into the broader, now largely dismantled genus Nemacheilus. The species epithet honours Hafez, the celebrated 14th-century Persian poet, a naming choice that reflects the fish's home region in the poet's native Iran rather than any feature of its anatomy.

The genus sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family, whose classification has been repeatedly reshuffled as ichthyologists split the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus into dozens of narrower, geographically coherent genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa, Oxynoemacheilus and Turcinoemacheilus itself. A skeletal study of T. hafezi later confirmed its placement in the family, documenting osteological features — including the absence of a preethmoid-I bone and a postcleithrum, four basibranchials, and sesamoid ossification — consistent with its nemacheilid relatives.

Morphology

Turcinoemacheilus hafezi is a small, elongate loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2.5 in standard length — modest even among the generally small-bodied stone loaches. Fin ray counts recorded in the original description include 10 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays, in keeping with the slender, low-profile build typical of the genus.

As a nemacheilid it shares the family's general body plan: a cylindrical, faintly compressed trunk, a small subterminal mouth suited to picking food from the substrate, and barbels around the mouth for feeling out prey on the stream bed. Like most stone loaches it is essentially scaleless to the touch, with tiny, deeply embedded scales offering little protection — a trait that matters for how the species should be handled and, in aquarium contexts, medicated. Detailed data on colour pattern and any suborbital spine development have not surfaced in the available literature; the species remains under-documented outside its taxonomic and osteological description.

Habitat

The species is a narrow-range endemic of southwestern Iran, known from the Karoun and Dez River drainages in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains — a demersal, strictly freshwater fish with no marine or brackish tolerance recorded. Life-history work carried out on the Beshar River, part of this drainage system, describes it living in clear, swift-current streams and rivers, the classic setting for a stone loach: cool to moderate temperatures, high dissolved oxygen, and a rocky or gravel substrate kept clean by continuous flow.

Like its Nemacheilidae relatives across the wider Middle East and Central Asia, it is built for life against the current, resting on or between stones and darting out to feed rather than drifting in open water.

Feeding

Turcinoemacheilus hafezi is described in the Beshar River life-history study as a micro-predator of invertebrates and insect larvae, foraging over the streambed of clear, fast-flowing water. This matches the standard diet of small nemacheilid loaches generally, which pick small crustaceans, insect larvae and other invertebrates from between stones and gravel rather than grazing algae or taking large prey.

No aquarium feeding data exists for this species specifically, but its wild diet points clearly toward a carnivorous micro-predator that would need small live or frozen foods and sinking preparations rather than flake, mirroring the care recommendations given for its better-documented Nemacheilidae relatives.

Mating

The one detailed life-history study available, from the Beshar River population, records a spawning season running from February to April, with the gonadosomatic index peaking in April — males reaching a GSI of about 6.73 and females about 14.50, the latter figure reflecting the substantial investment females make in egg production ahead of spawning. Absolute fecundity was measured at 42 to 726 eggs per female, with a mean of roughly 185 eggs — a modest clutch size consistent with a small-bodied stream loach rather than a large, high-fecundity species.

No details on courtship behaviour, sexual dimorphism or mate selection have been documented for this species. As with most Nemacheilidae, sexes are likely distinguished mainly by relative body girth in ripe females rather than by strong external markers.

Breeding

Turcinoemacheilus hafezi is a stone-and-brook loach in the classic Nemacheilidae mould: an egg-scatterer that spawns over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. The Beshar River study's spring spawning window and fecundity data describe the wild reproductive pattern, but there is no record of this species being bred in captivity, and it should be considered essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby.

This is the honest picture for most Nemacheilidae: aquarists rarely attempt to breed them, and species from narrow, specialist habitats like fast Iranian foothill streams are especially unlikely candidates, since replicating the flow, oxygenation and seasonal cues of their native rivers is difficult in a home tank. Data on this species' captive reproduction is sparse to non-existent.

In the aquarium

Turcinoemacheilus hafezi is not an established aquarium fish, and specific care information does not exist in the literature consulted here. What can be said comes from its family and habitat: as a Nemacheilidae stone loach from clear, swift, oxygen-rich streams, it would need cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, well-filtered water with strong flow, a gravel or rocky substrate, and a diet of small live, frozen or sinking foods rather than flake — the same requirements that apply across the genus.

Being essentially scaleless, as in other loaches, it would likely be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, warranting caution and reduced dosing if disease treatment is ever needed. Given its tiny known range and the almost total absence of aquarium-trade or husbandry reports, this is a species best regarded as scientifically documented rather than hobby-available; anyone encountering it should treat it as a specialist proposition requiring flowing, well-oxygenated conditions rather than a standard community setup.

Conservation

Turcinoemacheilus hafezi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no assessment exists, and the species carries no conservation category. This is a common situation for narrow-range Nemacheilidae endemics from Iran and the wider Middle East, many of which are known from only one or a few river systems and have never been formally assessed for extinction risk.

As a species restricted to the Karoun and Dez drainages in the Zagros foothills, it would be vulnerable to the same broad pressures facing freshwater fish across the region — water extraction, damming and habitat alteration — though no species-specific population or threat data has been published. In the absence of an assessment, the honest position is that its conservation status is simply unknown rather than presumed safe.
