Taxonomy & naming
Turcinoemacheilus saadii was formally described in 2014 by Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Golnaz Sayyadzadeh, Müfit Özulug, Matthias Geiger and Jörg Freyhof, in a paper that described three new species of Turcinoemacheilus from Iran and Turkey together. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone loaches — the largest of the loach families and a group that has been extensively reorganised over the past two decades as the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart along genetic and morphological lines. Turcinoemacheilus is one of the smaller genera to emerge from that reshuffling, restricted to a handful of species from Iran, Iraq and Turkey.
The species epithet honours Saadi Shirazi, the celebrated medieval Persian poet, a naming choice that reflects the fish's origin in Iran's Fars Province. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and no subsequent revision has altered the placement — Turcinoemacheilus saadii stands as described, with the anterior position of the anus noted by the original authors as one of the diagnostic features separating it from its congeners.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of Nemacheilidae, the family of small clear-stream loaches. The body carries a series of seven to nine dark saddle-shaped blotches along the back that never fuse into a continuous lateral stripe, a pattern that helps distinguish it from related species sharing the same rivers. The caudal fin is deeply notched, and the fin-ray counts recorded in the description are modest: seven soft dorsal rays and four to five soft anal rays.
Like other members of its family, Turcinoemacheilus saadii is presumed to carry the near-scaleless skin typical of stone loaches, though the erectile suborbital spine that defines the true spined loaches (family Cobitidae) is not a feature of this genus.
