Taxonomy & naming
Turcinoemacheilus kosswigi was described in 1964 by the Romanian ichthyologist Petru Bănărescu and the Turkish zoologist Turhan Nalbant, part of a wave of mid-20th-century work sorting out the stone-loach diversity of the Middle East and Anatolia. It is the type species of the genus Turcinoemacheilus, a small genus of nemacheilid loaches restricted to the Tigris-Euphrates drainage and neighbouring basins.
The species belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family of true loaches, encompassing hundreds of small, mostly benthic species across Eurasia. As with many Middle Eastern and Central Asian nemacheilids, the genus-level taxonomy of this group has been repeatedly revised as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken apart; the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the currently accepted combination, and it retains this species in Turcinoemacheilus. The specific epithet honours Curt Kosswig, the German-Turkish zoologist who did foundational work on the freshwater fishes of Anatolia and the Middle East.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reported to reach only about 2 in in standard length — one of the smaller members of an already small-bodied family. The body is essentially scaleless, a trait shared across the nemacheilids and one with real consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated. A dark longitudinal band runs along the flanks, a common camouflage pattern among riffle-dwelling stone loaches that helps break up the fish's outline against gravel and current.

Turcinoemacheilus kosswigi is endemic to the Tigris-Euphrates basin, with records spanning Turkey, Iraq and Iran, including the Euphrates river proper and, more recently, the Karoun drainage in Iran. It is a habitat specialist of coarse gravel in fast-running water — living on riffles and rapids rather than in pools, backwaters or still margins, which makes it a useful indicator of clean, well-oxygenated, swiftly flowing stream reaches.
The basin sits in a subtropical part of the Middle East, and the species' habitat use points to a fish that needs cool-to-moderate, highly oxygenated, current-swept water over clean gravel rather than warm, still or silty conditions. Feeding

Anyone keeping it should replicate its riffle habitat as closely as possible: a coarse gravel substrate, strong water movement, and high dissolved oxygen, achieved with a powerhead or spray bar rather than gentle filtration. Given the species' small adult size — around 2 in — a modest but well-oxygenated setup can suit it, though as a stream specialist it will do poorly in calm, low-flow water regardless of tank volume.
As with virtually all true loaches, the skin is scaleless, and this species should be treated as sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength doses of many standard treatments; gentler, reduced-dose protocols are the safer default until more is known. Because so little husbandry information exists for this exact species, keepers should proceed cautiously and conservatively, leaning on general stone-loach care rather than species-specific experience that largely does not yet exist.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Turcinoemacheilus kosswigi as Least Concern, based on a 2014 evaluation. This reflects its persistence across a reasonably wide span of the Tigris-Euphrates basin — Turkey, Iraq and Iran — rather than any indication that the species is common in trade or well studied.
The Tigris-Euphrates system faces well-documented pressures from damming, water abstraction and drought across its range, and a habitat specialist tied to clean, fast-flowing gravel riffles is inherently more exposed to flow alteration and siltation than generalist species in the same rivers. The species is not a trade commodity of note, and any aquarium specimens in circulation would be incidental wild-collected bycatch rather than a targeted or farmed fishery.
