Vanmanenia maculata is a hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae described in 2014 from the middle and lower Chang-Jiang (Yangtze) basin in the Chinese provinces of Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi. Like all members of its genus it is built for torrent life: the body is flattened ventral-side down and the paired fins are fanned wide to form a hydrodynamic sucker that pins the fish to bare rock in fast, icy-clear water. It is a specialist biofilm grazer that scrapes diatoms, algae and micro-organisms off stone surfaces, and it will starve or suffocate in a warm, still, biologically immature tank — the fate that claims most hillstream loaches that pass through the hobby. Distinguishing characters include the absence of secondary rostral barbels, a distinctive anus placement, and a characteristic spotted body pattern that gives the species its Latin name.

Taxonomy & naming

Vanmanenia maculata was described by Yi, Zhang and Shen in 2014 in the journal Zootaxa, based on specimens collected from the middle and lower Chang-Jiang (Yangtze) basin of south-central China. The holotype, catalogue number IHB 200606059, is a specimen of 2.5 in standard length. The species is placed in the genus Vanmanenia within the family Balitoridae — the hillstream or torrent loaches — a clade of flattened rheophilic cyprinoids distributed across the fast hill streams of South and East Asia.

Within Vanmanenia, the new species is distinguished from all congeners by a combination of characters: the complete absence of secondary rostral barbels, the placement of the anus, the shape of the rostral lobules, the proportions of the caudal peduncle, the extent of the ventral scaleless area, and the body coloration — a mottled or spotted pattern from which the species name maculata (Latin: spotted) is taken. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the authority for the valid combination Vanmanenia maculata Yi, Zhang and Shen, 2014.

Morphology

Vanmanenia maculata is a small, strongly dorsoventrally flattened loach adapted for life on exposed rock in fast-moving water. The holotype reaches 2.5 in standard length; the adult size in nature is not fully documented, and published data are sparse, but the genus is composed of small species comparable in stature to other hillstream loach genera. The head is broad and depressed, the snout rounded and overhanging the ventral mouth, and the lips are fleshy and modified for rasping biofilm from rock surfaces.

The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and held horizontally, forming together with the flattened ventral surface a passive sucker that allows the fish to remain stationary on rock faces even in powerful current. The body is covered in small, closely-set scales except for a ventral scaleless area whose extent is one of the diagnostic characters separating this species from congeners. The dorsal surface is pale brownish with dark spots or maculae — the pattern that names the species — and the pale underside is largely unspotted. A suborbital spine is present, typical of the superfamily Cobitoidea, though in balitorids it is generally less prominent than in the botiid loaches.

Habitat

Vanmanenia maculata is known from the middle and lower reaches of the Chang-Jiang (Yangtze) drainage in China, specifically from Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces. The Chang-Jiang system is one of the world's great river networks, and the hill-stream tributaries that balitorid loaches inhabit are characterised by clear, fast-flowing water running over bedrock and boulders, with high dissolved oxygen from turbulent aeration and cool temperatures relative to the lowland main stem.

As with all Vanmanenia, this species is a rheophile: it lives on the surfaces of rocks and stones in current rather than in still backwaters or soft-substrate pools. The habitat is oxygen-rich, food-poor in terms of free-swimming prey, and stable in terms of water chemistry — conditions that have shaped every aspect of the fish's body plan and physiology. It is a strictly freshwater species of subtropical hill streams.

Feeding

Vanmanenia maculata is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. It uses its fleshy, ventrally placed lips to rasp diatoms, filamentous algae, periphyton and associated micro-organisms from rock surfaces — the same layer of biological material that coats every stone in a mature, sunlit hillstream. It is not a predator of free-swimming invertebrates in the manner of a botiid loach, and it does not actively hunt; it grazes.

In the aquarium this feeding mode demands a mature, well-lit, rock-rich setup in which biofilm has had weeks or months to develop. A fish placed in a bare or newly established tank will find nothing to eat on the glass and stones and will steadily lose condition. Supplemental feeding with Repashy Soilent Green or similar gel foods, sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based frozen foods, and blanched greens such as courgette is important — but supplements cannot substitute for a genuine biofilm layer, only complement it. A hillstream loach that cannot rasp continuously through the day is a hillstream loach in decline.

Mating

Almost nothing is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Vanmanenia maculata specifically, and published information on mating in the genus Vanmanenia as a whole is sparse. In other balitorid hillstream loaches, sexual dimorphism tends to be subtle or absent in juvenile and resting fish, with ripe females identifiable mainly by a distended abdomen. Some hillstream loach genera show a snout tubercle pattern in breeding males — small keratinised bumps that develop seasonally — but whether this applies to Vanmanenia maculata is unrecorded.

By analogy with related genera, spawning in nature is likely tied to seasonal hydrology: rising or falling water temperature and flow in hill-stream tributaries serve as cues to bring fish into reproductive condition. The difficulty of replicating those environmental triggers — combined with the species' scarcity in the hobby — means virtually no aquarium spawning data exist.

Breeding

Vanmanenia maculata has not, to the knowledge of available sources, been bred in home aquaria. It is a hillstream loach, and the honest picture for the group is that most genera are rarely or never spawned in captivity. A few genera, notably Sewellia, have been bred in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks where fish drop eggs among stones and fine gravel with no parental care; whether Vanmanenia would respond similarly under the right conditions is unknown but plausible given its close relationship to those genera.

For practical purposes, keepers should regard breeding as unlikely without a purpose-built river-tank system, seasonal temperature fluctuation and very high flow — and even then, success would be exceptional. Eggs, if produced, would be small, adhesive and unattended; fry, if hatched, would be tiny and would require infusoria or similar microscopic food. This is not a fish that enters the trade from home breeders; any specimens available are wild-collected from their native range in China.

In the aquarium

Vanmanenia maculata is a demanding aquarium fish that is only appropriate for a specialist hillstream setup. The baseline requirements are non-negotiable: very strong water flow (turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is the standard hillstream target), exceptionally high dissolved oxygen, cool water in the range of 68–75 °F (68–75 °F), and a tank that has been running for several months and is colonised by mature biofilm on its rock surfaces. These conditions approximate the fish's native torrent habitat; without them it cannot feed properly, breathe comfortably, or maintain normal behaviour.

The tank should be fitted with powerheads or wavemakers directed over a rockscape that provides current breaks as well as open surfaces for grazing. A sand or fine gravel substrate suits the belly, and the setup benefits from indirect natural light or strong artificial light to grow the algae and diatom mat the fish depends on. Temperature must be kept cool — at 81 °F and above, hillstream loaches show increasing physiological stress, and the oxygen-carrying capacity of the water falls at the same time that metabolic demand rises.

Because the skin is thinly scaled and the fish is small, care is needed with medications: copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many common products can be harmful. Use half-doses and copper-free products where possible, and increase aeration during any treatment. Vanmanenia maculata is a solitary or loosely social species with no documented group requirement, but keeping two or three together in a suitably large hillstream tank is likely to be better for the fish than isolation. A species tank or a hillstream community with other cool, fast-water fishes is preferable to a warm general community aquarium.

Conservation

Vanmanenia maculata has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries no published conservation status, and we record it here as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a category. It was described only in 2014 from a relatively restricted part of the Chang-Jiang basin — Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces — and the extent of its distribution and population size have not been formally surveyed.

The Chang-Jiang system faces very significant and well-documented pressures: dam construction (the Three Gorges Dam and its dozens of tributaries' dams), pollution, sand mining, agricultural run-off, and the alteration of flow regimes that hillstream specialists depend on. Stream endemics with narrow ranges are among the most vulnerable freshwater fish in China. Without a formal assessment it is impossible to quantify the risk, but the species' apparent narrow range and specialised habitat make it prudent to regard it with conservation concern. Any specimens in the aquarium trade will be wild-collected.
